    A Minister for tourism is a good idea IF the person appointed has a background in the tourism field.

    It's criminal that Nigel Farage has not got at least a knighthood, our establishment like to award that to BBC lovies like Lenny Henry and such.

    ?? Isn't it amazing how easy it is to 'create' luxury hotels when you daddy owned 800 hotels and they were sold for 3 billion dollars... when you have that much money at your disposal and all the industry contacts at your finger tips, you would have to be a complete door knob not to be able to succeed.

    Rocco is a great example of someone who should be running the country but who never would. It’s a tragedy that politicians despite their commercial and worldly ignorance do not listen to the likes of Rocco. We would all be better off if they did.

    The ultimate problem that Sir Rocco alludes to is that the Post-Thatcherite Conservative nature is reactive rather than proactive. It's why we see a rise of people joining libertarian/anarchist/classical liberal movements.

    I am curious about something. Is it considered okay or not okay to ask a question of such guests as Sir Rocco Forte, or some other highly placed, cultivated foreign born British businessman if he ever met Prince Philip, had any conversation with him, remember any thoughts he offered on anything? Things you would like to read in a historical biography.

    Hmm, Sweden did not have 'a better outcome than any country in europe'. They were/are well ahead of Greece, Switzerland, Ireland, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark etc etc in terms of deaths per capita. And had their neighbours not locked down at the same time it would have been even worse for them... Plus their economy got hit pretty much just the same amount as all the others as well...

    • @TheEducator89
      @TheEducator89 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ok, I'll bite...
      You have cherrypicked your 'European' countries to try to show that Sweden is doing badly in Europe when in fact it's among the best (as Rocco Forte said). You even use a cheeky 'etc etc' after naming 7 countries you think did better to imply the list goes on and on when in fact it stops at 14 European countries that have a lower per capita death rate. I'll provide the balance you didn't with my own list of the other 20 European countries that Sweden has done better than per capita:
      Sweden 1,441 deaths per million population
      Better than:
      France 1,666
      Portugal 1,748
      Lithuania 1,769
      Armenia 1,780
      Spain 1,833
      Romania 1,883
      Poland 1,990
      UK 2,031
      Croatia 2,116
      Italy 2,168
      Slovenia 2,176
      Belgium 2,226
      Slovakia 2,309
      Georgia 2,377
      Moldova 2,526
      Czechia 2,854
      Bulgaria 2,959
      Hungary 3,058
      Macedonia 3,171
      Bosnia 3,183
      (Figures from Statista 28/9/21)
      So, Sweden has a lower (better) per capita death rate than 20 countries and a higher (worse) rate than 14. So overall, they've done slightly above average without any draconian lockdowns, mandates, lost schooling, etc etc (see I can be blasé too).
      As for the economy, Sweden had the 5th best (lowest) drop in GDP in 2020 in Europe (-8.3%) - out of all 34 European countries. They have since recovered that and their GDP is now up on where it was pre-pandemic:
      "About 0.6% up (from before pandemic) which puts Sweden at the front of the pack in European terms," David Oxley, an economist at Capital Economics, told Reuters."
      July 2021
      Added to that, Sweden were (I think) the only European country to keep their schools entirely open during the pandemic. That will almost certainly translate to improved educational outcomes in the short term, and probably contribute to better economic and social growth over the next decade.
      Anyway, hopefully that adds some informed balance to your rather disingenuous comment.

    • @govr6771
      @govr6771 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheEducator89 My previous lengthy reply kept getting removed because of source links and I'm not going to keep writing it out. Sweden had just under 10 times the death rate per capita of Norway and many times worse than all the rest of its Nordic neighbours. I was calling out the fact he said 'a better outcome than any country in europe' when that is 'disingenuous' at best

    • @TheEducator89
      @TheEducator89 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@govr6771 Yep, happy to agree he overstated Swedens success, they are in fact bog standard average when it comes to their outcomes both in terms of covid deaths per million and economic hit. I think I just read your initial comment to be quite negative on how Sweden has handled things and I actually think the data and outcomes as of right now show Sweden came out slightly above average in EU+UK terms. I also think longer term, their lack of lockdowns will have big positive benefits over the next decade on depression levels, health service wait times, education outcomes, and economic rebound, not to mention the ancillary benefits to democracy and social cohesion from not having the ideological splits and antagonism that some Western countries have had over CoVID. I think they'll be more united as a nation.
      I'm looking forward to future studies in 5, 10, 20 years about the pandemic responses and seeing what truly worked, what didn't, and which actions result in the best long term outcomes. I think Sweden might come out rather well vs countries that took more authoritarian approaches.

    • @govr6771
      @govr6771 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheEducator89 Yeah I'm definitely not denying the positive effects of their approach and they were lucky as the nordic nations got a pretty good run of things as opposed to many others, lockdowns or not for a variety of reasons.
      I think had the UK taken the Sweden approach we'd now been looking at 400k deaths or more, and that the hypothetical benefits would be hard to see through the horror and uproar.
      In a perfect world, we would have cut off all travel entirely to and from our island right at the start (strict quarantines/systems for those that did have to) and aggresively contact traced until we had no cases. Then the population would have been free to live, learn and holiday within the UK until fully vaccinated. But sadly we didn't go into this with any pre-prepared plan, so wishful thinking and by the time we had any plan it was far too late.

    • @TheEducator89
      @TheEducator89 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@govr6771 Yeah I'm in NZ and that's what they did here. Worked fine apart from botching the vaccine rollout hence we're still in lockdowns now. But if we'd done the initial phase we did, coupled with the speed of the UK or Israel rollout that would probably be the single best approach for island nations.
