I bought the 5 disc 4k boxset of the directors cut and I cant believe I still havent dived into it... I also got the 1-4 movie boxset and loved the theatrical version on 4k. I grew up with this version and always thought of it as a perfect movie for some weed on a friday night specially because of jerry goldsmith's score! That black screen intro grows your anticipation and fills your soul with such joy!
Wow, this was a great review/analysis of this film. I went to the original theater release with my Dad and my Grandpa. I loved the movie, it is classic Star Trek. Thanks for the deeper story and alternatives storylines. Fascinating.
Another excellent video! You know how much I love alternate versions of films, so I LOVE that someone with the talent is out there making these detailed and loving comparisons, thank you again! I contemplated doing something like this years ago but I just don't have the skill. Keep it up! I was just getting read to comment that I love the SLV, but then you mentioned me in the video 🤣 Here in the UK it was so rare for us to get the extended versions of films shown on American networks, but for some reason the SLV of the Motion Picture made it onto the BBC in the '90s and that was how I first saw the film. I don't think I actually saw the Theatrical Cut until the late 2000s when I picked up a Star Trek LD box set 🤣 I'm the first to admit that the SLV is a bit over padded in places, but it has a very small number of moments that for me are important (i.e. "Oh my God...") that didn't make it to the Director's Cuts. While I appreciate a lot of the editing changes and the sheer love and effort that went into the Director's Cuts I personally find the CGI effects often looking out of place in a 1970s film; particularly the shot of the sky from Vulcan, the V'Ger reveal shots, and that awful background replacement in the meeting room (that looked VERY rough on the big cinema screen). They are important shots that like you say the story needs...but to me they don't look like they are part of a film from 1979. So I'll take the somewhat shoddy editing of the SLV over the (to me) distracting CGI of the Director's Cut. But that's the great thing about the Complete Adventure boxset; we can choose which one to enjoy, without one replacing the others. I NEVER thought the SLV would get anywhere near the love it was given in that set. I just wish it was more widely available. Saying all that I'm definitely going to be revisiting the Director's Cut sometime soon. You pointed out a lot of very subtle changes I'd never picked up before that give me a new appreciation for the work that went into it, so thank you again for being so detailed!
For me the Director's Edition is the best version. I didn't really get to see the films growing up unless they were on tv so I didn't get caught up in the theatrical/special longer version thing and by the time I bought them on VHS around 1996-7, both versions were available. With Khan, I like both versions but I can't say the theatrical is lacking - here you can see that the theatrical misses elements that are needed and in the Director's edition. I am also glad they did some grain removal for it. I bought the theatrical bluray and thought it looked horrible due to the grain and coloring - despite being a new scan, it looked like an old movie. Here it looks a lot better. Only thing I don't care for is the Atmos soundtrack, for some reason it doesn't downmix to 5.1 nicely on my home theatre and the dialog is too quiet.
Merry Christmas. Thank you for putting all the time and thought into this retrospective. I still think TMP works better on DVD/Blu-ray than in a cinema. The pacing doesn't matter so much watching at home. Robert Abel & Associates were also too ambitious. They created a computer wire frame model of the Enterprise to control how the physical model would be photographed. That was several years ahead of its time. Paramount negotiated with cinema owners & committed to a December 1979 release, in exchange for advance booking fees of $28 million. That left only about 18 months from the date of the formal press event announcing the film with cast & crew in attendance. So Paramount have to take most of the blame for the chaotic production and budget over-run.
Yeah, it was mismanagement. If they had another six months, it might’ve gotten a much more polished release, but perhaps still not perfect. Again, the VFX teams were working around the clock to meet their deadline.
I have the ultimate collectors set - SOLELY to have the 4K special longer version, which is what I grew up with (vhs). Forever will V’Ger be over 82 AU’s in diameter…. For comparison, the Oort Cloud inner boundary (still part of our system) is minimum 2,000 AU’s away. I did not like the new external shots (2001) because their cgi model of the enterprise was flawed, and they picked unflattering angles…. But they did a fantastic restoration job

Thank you for watching and sharing that!

the OST is a 🐐
Ace film, Proper space epic.

Lolz to the AU thing...Pluto is like 40 AU away 😮😅

The Theatrical and TV Extended Cut will always be the best versions. I like the Director's version. The problem was the editing.
Any particular points of the editing that didn’t work for you in the Director’s Edition?
@@ravensfilm Parts of the film were shortened.
Fair enough. I felt most of the trims made the film flow better.
Good 👍 star trek movie, but too long 😊
