In Russia you get central heating in all block of flats buildings (a network of pipes running boiling hot water and connected to radiator blocks in every room of each flat) - it provides cheap heating for the winter from huge heating plants around the city..
Since it’s a network of pipes running throughout the whole block of flats, when your neighbors make too much noise, people bang on the pipes (and the neighbors above and below can hear this loud banging) to alert the noise offender that somebody is pissed and they need to quite down..

Many drugs that are prescription in other countries are over-the-counter in Russia and pharmacists don't always ask for a prescription even for those that actually require it. And even if they asked, an elderly lady can act like she really needs this medication but misplaced her prescription or something... Though I think in the later years it became more strict at least in regards to psychoactive drugs and such.

@@maneckineckbeard1749 My friend had a totally opposite experience in the US. She fell and hit her knee and it was hurting really bad. So she went to a pharmacy but couldn't get anything for the pain. She was told to go to a doctor, but we were on a group tour with a very tight schedule so it was practically impossible. So in this regard, Russia is way more convenient. Oh, and by the way, some pharmacies started to refuse to sell antibiotics without a prescription since covid.

My grandpa was Russian/Ukrainian, and he was hands-down the single toughest human being I've ever met. Ever. The guy would still chop wood & shovel snow, in his underwear, during howling blizzards...when he was in his late-80s and early 90s!! He also apparently once threw a guy twice his size through a window when the guy tried to rob my grandma at knifepoint.
"Tough" is putting it very, VERY lightly. Russians are often, to quote my grandpa, "Strong like bear. Strong like bull."
Oh, and as for the dashcam thing: I noticed the same thing, and asked a Russian friend. Her answer was that car insurance isn't required in the same way there as it is in the states, and that the police & justice system can still be really corrupt...so people all have dashcams in case they get into accidents, in order to be able to prove what actually happened.

While I can respect the opinions of people who suffered under the "communist" countries of the past, I think it needs to be said that what those places had was NOT Communism. To say that "communism sucks" while looking at those places is to say "totalitarianism sucks", and Totalitarianism is in direct contrast to the idea of a stateless classless society. Those places didn't even come close to socialism, The democratization of the workplace. These countries, from an academic perspective, enacted State Capitalism. In other words, they absorbed the structures laid out by capitalism into the governing body while said structures remained about the same, exploiting workers, and treating humans as a natural resource. No communist worth their salt will ever defend such an abhorrent structure.
All that said, I love Simon's work and I hope we keep this awesome stuff coming.
