A departure from my usual genres, I'm digging into the Prince of Darkness' discography box set and showing off all the goodness inside. Most importantly, though, I'm ranking his studio albums from worst to best and talking about why. As someone with one of the greatest discographies in music history between Black Sabbath and his solo career, it's a tough job to rank, but I think I did well. Let me know you if you agree!

I disagree on Ultimate Sin. It’s the one album I was searching out for years and was so happy to have a copy. To me it’s deserving of at least 8/10. Shot In The Dark is my favorite Ozzy song because it has connections to my mom. She and I both love this song. I loved seeing all that boxset has I just wish I had the money to drop to get it! Lol

Love this list!!! I saw Ozzy in 1996 on his Ozzmosis tour at the Meadowlands arena in Jersey. My first concert. Korn was the opening act. It is still the best concert I've ever been to. Ozzy ran past us as the show opened. Years later I dated the nephew of artist Boris Vallejo who did some artwork for Bark at the moon. Awesome.
Nobody likes "the ultimate sin" but me! I agree about the production being "too bright" , but the music's great!

On the Ozzmosis album, Thunder Underground is very underrated imo. I highly recommend that song!
I love my box set. I have listened to entire thing over the last few months. My only critique is that Under Covers wasn't included. The collection should have been rounded out.
I love that they added the live albums and the b-sides.
My rankings are pretty close to your list. I love Ozmosis. Thunder Underground is my favorite. You Can't Kill Rock and Roll on Diary is pure arena-rock magic.
Lastly, you should check out the digital app videos and concert footage. It is amazing!

Great job on this. Love all Ozzy's work. Saw Sabbath twice in concert.1971 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, 1974 at California Jam 1 at the Ontario Speedway.

This set was to rich for my blood. I own most originals, I would love to add Ozzmosis the most. My OG No More Tears is one of my prized records, found an Italian promo press that I will get buried with me lol. Still hoping they do a standard black release for all us poor schmucks. Too Many Records it’s so difficult and mine would be slightly different depending on the day of the week lol. I have a soft spot for No Rest for the Wicked, and would have put it a bit higher but than it’s like what would I dropped lower. Ranking the elites is no easy task!
I honestly have no clue about Ozzy's music. I never really been into it. But now I am curious and I want to give it a shot. Thanks for the detailed explanation of each studio album.

Great review. I’m on the fence about getting this one. You mentioned you got at least 2 records replaced and a couple with pops or some sort of distortion. It’s a lot of money And I’m not sure I want to deal with that frustration of not getting a prime product.
It can be a frustration, for sure, but their customer support was super easy to deal with.
Fantastic review. I tend to agree almost all the way through, though I may have placed Bark at the Moon a bit higher. Overall, I enjoyed the hell out of listening through this entire set. Some of the newer albums, I was able to immerse myself in for the first time, while some of the classics, I was able to deep dive for the first time in ages. It would have been fantastic to get Speak of the Devil included here, but I don't think anyone expected that to begin with.
I had to go and buy a copy right after listening through my set!

I gave a thumbs up for just putting the video out because you don't cover much metal or hard rock. It feels very shocking, however, that your rankings show a lack of respect for the quintessential albums. But, I still value your opinion, very entertaining, and will always view many of your informative videos. Keep em coming.
Im a tad confused at the comments. The complaint is that Ordinary Man pressings are noisy pop wise. Isn't OM pressed differently than these specific vinyls ? I've always heard about and expected a little crackle with colored vinyl , so it's never bothered me . But I thought that OM was machine pressed, as opposed to hand pressed like the box set? I figured that meant these were just beautiful in sound in comparison . Just hit purchase on it today . I know its worth it , just takes extra convincing and justification lol.

Appreciate the thoughtful and insightful review, Kung Fury-Lite. My box was damaged/seam splits in shipping, so they were kind enough to replace it in full. Need to check all the discs for warping though - yikes!

Still hoping for a regular reissue of No More Tears. Scream was the first record I ever picked up on vinyl back in 2010. Therefore, I have kind of a soft spot for it even though I totaly agree that it's nowhere near his best works. Would love to see more artist collection/discography videos. You did one for Kanye a while back too.

No More Tears had a US press when it was originally released. I own it. Here is the discogs ID: 3724657. Anyway, I really want this box set, but I can't spend that kind of money. A real bummer. Great video, and solid rankings.
Yes I have the original epic us pressing too. Not that bad sounding in my opinion. Sounds better than the Ordinary Man vinyl for sure. One of my most valuable records. It's still in shrink with hype sticker!
Never cared for Ozzmosis and Down to Earth before but I spun them when I got the set and they’ve grown on me a lot.
I still can't get into Down to Earth that much.
Matt, I've been waiting for this review with baited breath for months. I appreciate the fact you can be more objective than I am, because I start at 7-ish out of ten at the bottom. Probably because it's the only Ozzie vinyl (less Black Sabbath) I have. I've never tired of listening to this wonderful set. What I agree with you on is Ordinary man should have been included (with that autograph! Jeesh dude, that's awesome!) the album covers are kinda cheese they could be better, but the unique crazy vinyl splatter makes up for it.
Our rankings would slighty differ, mainly because the live albums are a little higher on the tree having been to more than a few shows they are good representations and Ultimate Sin ranks a lot higher for me. I think it's one of his better albums, but don't disagree with the brightness comment. Thank you for taking the time to do this, they will only hang you on a cross for it if it's upside down, and how all us Oz fans would prefer to go out!
p.s I didn't have any of the quality control issues you had other than production debris still on a few that was easily blown off. Didn't notice that not all the slips are poly lined until you mentioned it. Easy fix, but yeah another quality control thing which is a pretty common complaint on a lot of new records.

Does this version of Blizzard have bonus tracks on it? I know the 40th anniversary version does on Spotify. So there’s a bonus track titled You Said It All that was previously only available on the Mr. Crowley single. It was added to the 40th anniversary reissue and the sound quality of that track is not very good.
At least on the streaming version it isn’t
Can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to hearing to a quality listen of the song and how disappointed I was with how it actually sounded. I had only heard this song previously by listening to it on TH-cam and the TH-cam version may actually sound better. If your copy has this track, did you notice if there’s any issues with it such as digital swirly sounds? I’m not sure if that is the technical term but you probably get what I’m saying

My rankings, this from the perspective of a 48 year old that's been a fan since about the age of 10. We aren't too horribly far apart on many of them, but a bit more on others. In general, his first 7 are on a different level than the last few, largely due to the fact that Sharon ousted Zakk(or any right hand man guitar hero god like person) from writing it with him, in favor of writing with 'production teams'. It's a noticeable difference starting with Down to Earth(there had been outside writers previously, but in a smaller role, and typically with more 'metal' cred).
11. Black Rain: a couple of good tracks, but some of the least ozzy like songs in his catalogue(and they weren't good, different but good is OK).
10. Down to Earth: the first record that sharon told zakk to come record what was already written, and it sounds it. It's got some decent stuff.
9. Scream: Digging me Down is one of the best tracks of his later career. Again, several good songs, but the worst of them are better than the worst of #10/11
8. Ordinary Man: Actually this is in a pretty dead heat with Scream. I was hoping he would bring back Bob Daisley(a writing partner for ozzy's best days) and Zakk to write it, go out in style with a hard/heavy rock masterpiece, which was not to come. But, once you accept it's another modern ozzy production, there's some nice tunes, with some genuine emotion.
8-11 are his worst IMO, but I still have a copy in vinyl, CD and cassette, so I guess theyre not that bad.
7. The Ultimate Sin: overlooked classic. The big single is the worst song on it. Production aside, Jake rips all over this.
6. No Rest for the Wicked: a consistent record full of solid B's, kind of lacking any huge standout A+, but its damn good.
5. Ozzmosis: A darker reaction following the happier No more Tears. The darker, doomier, heavier tunes are what propelled sharon to utilize 'hit makers' the rest of the way. Too bad she doesn't realize his true fans love the dark and heavy stuff.
4. No More Tears: the most radio friendly of his great records. a couple of lesser tunes(too simple so they could make radio), but some known and lesser known Gems. the titel track is immense.
3. Bark at the Moon: very tough job following the death of Randy Rhodes, but given a fair shake without the comparisons, and Bark is a stellar record.
2. Blizzard of Ozz: what's to say, he still has 4-5 of these songs in his playlist today.
1. Diary of a Madman: 1&2 are two chapters of the same book. This is the darker chapter, deeper, more haunting, timeless.
If you take these 11 records, along with the 9 studio records with Black Sabbath, that's 20 records, well more than half are stone cold classics, and the worst of the bunch still has some good stuff on it. How many people come close to that?

I never really listened to Ozzy or Sabbath, but looooooved playing “Mr. Crowley” on Guitar Hero Word Tour. Maybe “Blizzard of Ozz” would be a good starting point for me? Sounds like I won’t find a copy of “No More Tears.”

Hello Matt, I'm sorry if I missed it but did you say this was mastered from the original tapes? If I'm going to drop 5 large on this box set it needs to be one of the best sounding. No digital crap!!
I don't know if it's from the original tapes but I will say they are mastered excellently and are the best versions I've heard, for the most part!

I mean, 16 records at average $25 is about $400, so paying extra $100 for all the box material and the box itself is not crazy prized considering how GnR released that ultimate boxset for $1000 last year

You can tell that this review of Ozzy's albums is made in a perspective of a collector and not a music lover. The only reason that No More Tears is his no.1 pick is because the record itself is a hard to find collector item. Is a joke to put that record in front of Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman.
I have over 400 videos talking about my love of music -- but yeah, I'm just valuing this discography based on rarity. Lmao. NMT is widely considered his best record by many fans. All 3 of the records mentioned are excellent, I just enjoy the songs on NMT more -- and the production. Randy is my favorite Ozzy guitarist, but Zakk kills it on NMT.
If I'm paying $500 for a box set and two (?) records need to be replaced upon opening the box, which has nasty gash on it to boot, I would be pretty upset.
Also heard some horrible things about initial pressing of "Ordinary Man" LP. Unplayable warps and scratches all over brand new records. I'm not sure if those were produced at same place but QC might be an issue.
My standard pressing of Ordinary Man is noisy for sure. No way was it pressed in the same place as this box -- the box all sounds fantastic.
The really need to reissue no more tears.

Bark At the Moon so low on your list?! You need to loosen your headband! ;-) Kidding. Kinda... No; very good assessment. I agree that Ozzmosis is super under rated. No More Tears is great (and come on Sharon... how 'bout a single disc reissue already?...) but for me, Blizzard of Ozz is king. The Ultimate Sin is my least favorite, but I think you're right; he doesn't have any albums that are flat out bad.
Bark At The Moon is one of my favorite Ozzy solo tracks but the majority of that album is so forgettable which is a shame after the previous two masterpieces.
