Poson Full Moon In Sri Lanka / Poson Poya Celebration
Poson Full Moon, also known as Poson Poya, is one of the most revered Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka. This day remarks the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka by Mihindu Himi ( Arahat Mahinda ) the son of the Indian Emperor Ashoka.
The festival is particularly celebrated in the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Mihintale where devotees gather for pilgrims and rituals. Activities include alms-giving, chanting of scriptures, and observing Buddhist precepts (sil). The lighting of lanterns and the decoration of temples create a serene and festive atmosphere.
