I started Virginia Bright Leaf seeds a few days ago. They popped today. Im growing bright leaf exclusively this season. Im starting much earlier this year. A month earlier than last. Im hours north of Virginia in NJ zone 7A.
I had covid could not taste very much and smoked almost none tobacco the last few months but the last days i tried my homegrown tobacco (germany) again. The tobacco was kilned and air cured. The sorts are burley jupiter, goose creek red (dark virginia) and even an cigar sort (havanna dunkelrot). After some resting time when it was not that good the tobacco got noticable better to a point where i would say it you can´t get similar tobacco flavour from commercial stuff (even quiet famous blends like samuel gawith). I was for example not a big burley fan before but man does this stuff taste great when it is kilned and rested. The dark virginia has also gotten way more tasty and slowly the tobacco notes start to truley develope. Even with air curing the virginia will taste sweet and has some lemon to it. While beeing more tobaccoy than flue cured. The cigar strain needes some more time to age but even this sort had a similar taste to dominican cigars i smoked with a friend but still a little bit green. The only stuff which is really strong and rips your tounge apart is homegrown flue cured virginia. This stuff taste like smoking a lemon. I need to make some perique from my burley or mix it but thats a really big difference to commercial flue cured blends.
