It really feels so wrong seeing Luke with Alex, so soon after the wonderful Summer On The Run. I don't remember these scenes back in the day when I watched it as a teenager, but I'll bet viewers were not happy back in 1980 to see these scenes of Luke and Alex flirting!!
Luke, while growing up poor, is not without an education. He learned his courtly manners from both literature and classic movies. It costs nothing to read a book from the public library and Luke has them memorized. Note when in the magic shop he picks up the skull and quotes from Hamlet: "Alas, poor Yorick!" Luke is a "pretender" and having such a good education, he can fit himself to what you want him to be -the hand kissing Romeo or the craps shooting bad boy - he does it all with gusto.
A renaissance man a chameleon able to blend in or stand out in no matter what environments he's in. Gary Cooper , Marlon Brando , Jimmy Stewart , James Dean all rolled up in one. Throw in a dash of Bill Murry and ladies and gentlemen I give you the incomparable Luke Spencer

Dear Sussezq, I just wanted to tell you thank you for uploading all these old GH episodes from the 1980s. I watched several a few nights ago and really enjoyed seeing them after all these years. I appreciate that you went to all the time and trouble to enter these.
He is fascinating to me, really my kind of character. And I love that he is into literature and movie classics which he incorporates to his life when he needs it.
Love watching these old episodes from time to time; thank you so much for uploading them all. I find watching these now, how much more intriguing and fascinating, a dichotomy of scoundrel and sympathetic, romantic lead Luke was as he started out....a fascinating character to watch all these years later...ironically much more so than when TG tried to make him so "edgy" in later years. He was cooler to begin with...much more interesting. I wish they'd stayed the course with that...TG thought he had to "shake Luke up", "un-domesticate" him... I think his character became less dimensional than what he was here. And of course I never forgive them for busting up L&L, who should have gone out as they came in...the forever love story.
I would call Luke a scamp but this attraction to Alex has nothing to do with her. She embodies danger and depth that Luke came to know over the summer in his pursuit of the left-handed boy. He feels powerful and self-possessed when he's solving mysteries and crime - truly himself (which is why we love him!). So I forgive him for flirting with Alex. It's not about her at all. :)
Seems the writers toyed with the idea of moving Luke on from Laura. I am assuming viewer feedback at the time was very negative when they moved to pair him with Alex. What Laura did with the cigar ring was really bad. I can understand why Luke was so hurt that he dumped her. Luke’s true love and devotion for Laura is what part of what makes the character so endearing and popular though. The writers obviously had not quite figured that out yet at this point. (I have never watched any of this before. )
If Luke really loved Lara as he professed he would not constantly be romancing so many other women. But none of the ther actresses he played opposite had the same chemistry with him as Genie does.
True. Tony couldn’t escape the L&L match throughout his career. He both loved and hated it. Every time he tried to get out of it it always came back to L&L.
Yeah, you know there are things like that about Luke Spencer that make me swoon...( and most of the time I find him scary in a way).. but he ALWAYS helps a lady on or off with a coat, and he kisses hands....( which completely makes me Crazy!!)...but it makes no sense... his father was a drunken abuser, don't think he was worried about decorum... and then he grew up in a brothel... where did he learn such good manners???
Luke is fictional, that's why he can have so many different characteristics that don't make sense with his upbringing. Like, how he did he get to be a trained dancer???
What NY's Eve kiss? Clearly I missed something. And why is he putting his arm around Alex? Don't love how intrigued he seems to be with Alex so quickly when he's supposedly love sick over Laura.
I think mostly Alexandria is a distraction. A distraction so Luke doesn't have to dwell too much on thinking of Laura. But we know its no good, he'll never get Laura out of his head.
I think I finally figured out Alex's tears moment. She was torn up knowing she was deceiving her former lover James Duvall and was in cahoots with her new love Tony Cassadine. Her play on Luke and Laura was never real except to control him during the ice princess search.
i know luke loved laura but,he was a bit of a player and capable of loving other women and which he did on the show. scotty i beleive had the true love for laura
I think Luke believed Laura was on a higher plane than other women. His love for Laura was also on another plane than his flirtatious womanizing. To Luke, Laura seemed to represent all that was good and "angelic".
He always admitted he was a flirt……but insisted..when Tony talked about his character he said it meant nothing in these days. Luke’s character flirted with women. But he was true blue I think…I’ve known men like that. And I’m not talking about the smarmy kind….now the disco dancing so outrageous was a little different I will admit
I do think the actress who plays Alex is a much better actress than the one who played Jennifer. "What is this woman capable of? The answer I come up with is almost anything." Your instincts are dead on, Luke.

Maybe that's why we soon get to see a handsome new nemesis for Luke who becomes part of the story as well!

That could have been the writing. Maybe they were checking their options at this time, to put L&L back together or pair them off with others.
