that's called fanchants. the organizer of the official fanclub or the agency releases the official fanchant before the 1st live performance of every comeback song so that the fandom will memorize and practice it. every performance in music shows specially the comeback performance, fanchants are important for the shoot. it's a culture in kpop. in bts concerts and live performances, ARMYs follow the fanchants but in some other countries we actually sing the whole song.
The camera work for American awards shows are not that great, they focus too much on the audiences. You should check their other award show performances. You will be impressed. You should check out MMA and MAMA awards

SO AMNY DAMN CROWN SHOTS!!!!!!!!!! Xceleste has a great fancam from the front row right in front of V. The sound is better as well since it's not "controlled" by the broadcast to filter out the crowd. Also... you DON'T need to check if they're singing live... they are... every time.
As others have mentioned they always sing live, the only time I now they didn’t was their stage collaboration with Re; On Soul on Music Bank in Mexico 2014. If you watch the intro performance video you will see three different camera angels, big hit did this because their live performance, you could not get a good view because of the camera. It was on MBC 20141231. If you see it be prepared to be annoyed. They did this intro to their song Danger.
You should watch This is ARMY by XCeleste. You'll be surprised how diverse and active ARMY is. It's not your typical fandom. 💜 (She also made This is BTS. In general she's our go-to-girl on everything BTS.)
