As a side note here. The name they gave the boat at 6:26 is taken from an older song by the band, from the older setup of the band.
If you want an awesome live song with Sabaton you should react to en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war) live Scandinavium Gothenburg.
The album Carolus Rex they released during that time is about a part of Swedish history called the era of great power (stormaktstiden in Swedish) from when Sweden was a much bigger nation with ambitions of expanding.
The album was released with both a Swedish and English version, the difference being that the Swedish one tells the story from our/a Swedish soldier's view while the English is more from an outsider's view.
It is the Swedish version they played during that show so be sure you have the subtitles on, I was at that show and all I can say is that you will not regret it.

Numbers you ask? Over 2200 on the Bismarck, 114 survived. HMS Hood had 1418 men, only 3 survivors.
A stand alone single in 2019. The 2019 album, The Great War, and the 2022 album, The War to End All Wars, are both about WW I, but they wanted to do this topic. The video was made in conjunction with Wargaming , the company that makes the world of warships games.
The name painted on the boat they went out in , is Primo Victoria. That is the name of the first Sabaton album released, the title track is about D-Day at Normandy. The Capt. of that boat is the son of the last survivor of the Bismarck, who had passed away about a year earlier.
Next for Sabaton: Recommend any of the 'animated story videos', "Night Witches", "No Bullets Fly" ,"Lady of the Dark" ,"The Red Baron" ,and " The First Soldier".

    Hello Bill.
At the beginning of the video, you see the pilot of the fishing boat (a net trawler) looking at a silver pocket watch. Inscribed on the inner lid surface are numbers. The person playing the part is the son of the young German sailor that survived the sinking of the Bismark. The watch belonged to the ship's captain, who gave it to the young sailor before the ship sank.
The British like to claim they sunk the Bismark, but this is not true. He (German ships were 'male', not female as other countries do things) was sunk by his crew to prevent capture by the British and thus shame the Kriegsmarine (German Navy). This was later confirmed by the location of the wreck site and subsequent ROV dives upon the wreck. Also confirmed was that the ship 'turned turtle' and shed her turrets before fully sinking beneath the surface. Which, had been a 'bone of contention' among various historians for decades. The Hull rotated as it sank and hit the bottom on a slope and slid to its current resting place, upright, sitting on its keel. Thus, the damage at the water line can be seen and discounted as the reason the ship sank. Although nearly all his guns were silenced, the ship did not sink until his crew and their officers determined that there was no hope of saving him, and they flooded the ship to sink him. Denying the British their 'victory' and war prize.
The Swordfish are those biplanes taking off from the carrier. They were hold-overs from the first World War and, as can be seen, did their job well. The ONLY reason that the Bismark was sunk, was the damage to the ship's rudder, that forced the ship to circle, well outside of support range from land bases. Had that torpedo missed, the Bismark would have safely returned to France and would have quickly been repaired and back to sea, to terrorize the British navy.
The video is made from footage made by Sabaton, and cut with video supplied by the makers of the computer game World of Warships. Thus, the high quality of the 'fight' scenes and views of the ship.
Sabaton makes fantastic rock music, with historical themes. This is a prime example of their work. They do their 'homework' on every song. Researching and using the most accurate information that they can gather. And, when they can, they include people like the son of the young sailor that survived the sinking of his ship. The watch is the actual thing. Not a prop. Not a fake. And, it has the precise coordinates of the Bismark's sinking. His final resting place is close by that site, but his guns are there, where they slid from their baskets and to the bottom, while the hull righted itself and 'sailed' to his eventual resting place at the base of an underwater ridge's slope.

And another great reaction to an awesome band. Thanks for that, Bill. And I just have to concur on the various recommendations for the animated story video for 'No Bullets Fly'. But, bring tissues, this is just a heartwrenching story.
And on a sidenote: It's funny that you mentioned the Titanic, because it was the same famous oceanographer and maritime archeologist who found both of the wrecks. It was Robert D. Ballard, who found the wreck of the RMS Titanic in 1985, and later the wreck of the Bismarck in 1989, and he explored a lot of other places with famous shipwrecks (USS Yorktown, RMS Lusitania and the site where the battle of Guadalcanal took place).

I do have to point out, Bismark was not chancellor of Germany in 1940. That would be Adolf Hitler. Otto, Prince of Bismarck, Count of Bismarck-Schönhausen, Duke of Lauenburg was a famous Prussian statesman in the mid 19th century. He had a lot to do with German unification under the Prussian monarchy.

The "bound by iron and blood" in the lyrics of the song is a nice touch.
This comes from a speech by Arch-chancellor Otto Von Bismarck (after which the ship was named) that he gave in the equivalent of the American Senate/Congress.
The quote is "Not through speeches and majority decisions will the great questions of the day be decided-that was the great mistake of 1848 & 1849-but by iron and blood."

Hi, happy to share. I reckon little nuggets like that helps to paint a picture of a historically important person. This particular one gives you a little bit of insight into Bismarck as a political actor. Ruthless and efficient is the best way to describe him, I think.
The TH-cam channel Extra History has a fun and informative series in 7 parts about Bismarck if you're interested. It's not that deep and contains a lot of humor, but it's an interesting watch regardless in my opinion.
Happy New Year to you and yours as well 🙂

    1. This was SABATON's response after recieving overwhelming fan requests (over 2 million mails) to make a song about Bismarck.
    2. In the very beginning of the song you can hear a recording of the actual radio broadcast from the morning when (BBC ?) announced that the HMS Hood was sunk.
    3. Ark Royal's (considered an outdated carrier at the time) torpedo bombers have crippled the Bismarck, with her slow speed bi-planes which allowed them to fly very low close to water surface making them very hard to hit by Bismarck's anti-air defense.
    4. The final battle involved battleships King George V and Rodney together with heavy cruisers Norfolk and Dorsetshire hammering at the Bismarck.

It was also my dad that told me. Ships dont sink. They die. Only crew and sailors understand that. He would have also noted that they would try to save as many enemy as they could because it was about the hardware not the people. I love they include that in the video too.

They scuttled it because there were military secrets and technologies on board that if the Allies captured it could endanger current and future German naval vessels and their operations. Like with the cracking of Enigma, it was key pieces of information that led to the code being broken. A warship of Bismarck's importance would have a wealth of information.
The interesting thing about the Tirpitz (the sister ship to Bismarck) is that even though she was much heavier and more heavily armoured, she was damaged by attacks from mini submarines and finished off by Lancaster bombers with the forerunners of the bunker buster bombs. 12,000 pound tallboy which is classified as an "earthquake" bomb because of the way it directs force. It was used against submarine bases and the Tirpitz. I believe if I remember correctly it was specifically designed to kill heavily armoured targets and targets that are usually situated deep within reiinforced facilities. The shockwave from the detonation would have been enough to kill to the crew.

    • @BemusingBill
      @BemusingBill  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@114Riggs [QUOTE: The Bismarck is not a "she", Germans didn't play gender nonsense with shipnames.]
Sorry, but they absolutely do. In the german language most of the ships' names are female, especially if they are named after persons or geographical names. Even if the eponym of the Bismarck was the (male) german chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the Bismarck is a "She". In Germany we say "die Bismarck", this is the female gender, not "der B." oder "das B." which would be masculine or neutral gender. The gender is only kept from the eponym if it is a name of an animal or an astronomy term...
And, @BemusingBill : We Germans say indeed Vaterland (fatherland), but at least we speak our Muttersprache (native / mother tongue)

@@progoholic For pete's sake, you are right. and so am I in this case. The Captain of the Bismarck refered to the Bismarck as male because of the savage power of the ships guns, that would only be honoured by a maculine pronoun. He would correct the crew aswell.
The crew would refer the ship as a her/she as in naval tradition. As long as the Captain was not around to hear it. This is known through documentation.
Now settle down and don't get angry, hit tables and invade my little old country. Or go al Stasi on me for having the wrong sense of humour.
