    would be awesome if you could do a video talking about your song writing process. maybe choose a song from sylosis and explain your thought process and stuff. i always write 50 - 70% of a song and then get stuck lol.

    After watching this video i decided to switch it to 11's from my 10's, i bought a 11-50 set and found the high strings very tight on standard tuning, couldn't really do a full bend. Also low and behold broke the string whilst tuning. Would the 11-49 you suggested in the video be any better on standard tuning? The low E felt amazing to play on though

    I've been using 10's for standard for a long time but recently switched to Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkys (9-46) because I'm learning lead and wanted easier bends, but wanted to keep the low end tight.

  • @XChristianNoirX
    @XChristianNoirX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What about action height? Do you lose extremely low action and then fat strings because it add tension to slinky action?
    Usually, higher action feels like more tension and also has thicker tone with more output... Usually, when you go really low on action, the strings feel slinkier and the tone gets smaller, losing output, sustain, and general tone.
    I love how low action feels, but higher action tends to sound better.
    It would be nice to know your action measurements! At this point you'll probably bit see the message though..

    Hi Josh, what would be your recommendation for dropped C and second question - what is more convenient in terms of using pinch harmonics with bending at 5th or 6th string? Cheers from Russia :)

  • @kazaakas
    @kazaakas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Jon Schaffer inspired me to play 13-62 strings in D# standard. Just love hammering away on those tight bastards!
    When I play a guitar in a store with gauge 10, I find it too flimsy to do any thrashy gallop riffing, but fast lead lines , vibrato or bends are effortless on those, which is nice.

    • @JamesDavis-mm2mi
      @JamesDavis-mm2mi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is 4 years old now, but i used to use 13s. Those really teach you to hammer away at the strings

  • @necroticpoison
    @necroticpoison 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Old vid / late comment but yeah definitely agree. Slightly heavier than 10's and equivalent for lower tunings seems to work well. Only thing I've found with slightly heavier sets is they sometimes come with much heavier top 2/top 3 strings that is necessary. Man it's a shame that (even though there are brands like StringSource and Horizon Devices) there still isn't a brand that do really really good tension, and as well for all tunings. Sometimes even custom gauges don't have the odd numbers or 9.5's etc.

  • @charvelgtrs

    I use 11-49's as well, but in C# tuning. Would be way too tight for me in E standard.

  • @stefan.avramov
    @stefan.avramov 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, have you tried 10-49? It looks they have a set like that (EJ20) and you mentioned you like a 10 on the high strings. With a fixed bridge I believe that won't affect much the tension in the lower ones.

    Josh, I have a question. I play 10-52s on my shorter 24.75" scale guitars and I love it, however on my longer scale ESP M-II with the Floyd I find the 10-46 set a bit too loose in the low strings. Talking E-Standard here. 10-52 is a bit too stiff, what should I do? Should I make me a hybrid set with 49s for the low strings and 10s for the highs or just roll with the looser tension the 10-46s have?
    Thanks and cheers

    • @dirgeforthymurder

      I use ernie ball 48 - 10 gauge strings for standard tuning..works perfect. Also, i think ernie ball are coming out with 48 - 10.5 gauge in a single set so you dont have to buy two seperate packs for just 1 guitar. You could also buy a pack of 52 - 10 and another 48 - 10.5 and mix the 52 with the 10.5 and the 48 with the 10, as shorter scale has slightly less tension than 25.5 scale.

      Problem is my sweat eats through everything except Elixir. I have the 10-46 set now on my Fender scale guitars, but I've been thinking about just purchasing some 11-49 sets Elixir makes and using the lowest three with 10s for the highest. Kinda a waste of strings but I guess my only option really :/

      Well, Slayer used 9-42 downtuned to Eb and they set the standard for speed . Also , more than gauge but core thickness changes how a gauge tension is. I have 10s the same tension as 9s and 9s the same as 10s.

    Oh God, after listening to this, what a load of shit. Billy Gibbons plays 7-38 strings (not a typo), and his tone and sustain are HUGE! There is a certain point, to where the sectional density of a string will cause it to be dampened by the pickups.
