La messe est restée le principal service de l'église luthérienne après la Réforme, et la musique a joué un rôle important dans sa célébration, tant le dimanche que les jours de fête. À l'époque de Bach, la cantate était la partie musicale la plus importante de l'office, appelée tout simplement " Hauptmusik " - " MusiK " - " la musique ". Il s'agissait d'un service en miniature dans le cadre de la Messe entière, composé d'un " dictum " (" il est dit dans les Écritures " : un texte biblique cité directement ou paraphrasé), un hymne strophique et un texte poétique madrigalien ; ce dernier, présenté sous forme de récitatifs et d'arias, donne une explication ("explicatio", littéralement "déroulement") du "dictum", de sa signification et de son application dans la vie chrétienne. Tout comme un opéra a besoin d'un livret, la condition préalable à la composition d'une cantate est donc un texte poétique, et ces textes sont un genre littéraire reconnu au XVIIIe siècle. La forme de la Messe luthérienne a été établie bien avant l'époque de Bach, et la Cantate en était une composante importante non seulement à Leipzig mais partout ailleurs où l'on cultivait la musique figurative. Elle venait immédiatement après l'Evangile, lu par le ministre du culte, et avant le Credo. Si la Cantate était en deux parties, la deuxième partie était chantée après le sermon, qui prenait normalement son thème dans l'Évangile du jour. Cette position dans la liturgie reflète le lien étroit entre la cantate et l'Évangile - la principale lecture biblique du jour - et souligne sa fonction ; à sa manière, la cantate interprète le passage qui vient d'être lu et est donc une sorte de sermon en soi, utilisant le verset et la musique tout comme le prédicateur utilise la parole. Le lien étroit entre la cantate et l'Évangile est variable. Elle était la plus étroite lorsque le texte de la Cantate commençait par une citation directe d'une phrase de l'Évangile. Un exemple est la Cantate pour le lundi de Pâques, ''Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden'' (‘’Demeurez avec nous, car le soir arrive’’, Luc 24,13-35), car ces paroles sont au cœur de l'Évangile du jour, le récit de la rencontre du Christ ressuscité avec deux de ses disciples sur le chemin d'Emmaüs. La cantate du mardi de Pâques est une méditation sur la salutation ''Friede sei mit euch'' ('Que la paix soit avec vous'', Luc 24:36-47), prononcée par Jésus lors de sa première apparition à un groupe plus nombreux de ses disciples après la Résurrection. La référence établit le lien avec la lecture de l'Evangile que l'assemblée vient d'entendre, mais la fonction de sermon de la Cantate est soulignée par le léger changement de texte dans la Cantate, où elle prend la forme ''Der Friede sei mit dir'' : ''Euch'' est pluriel mais ''dir'' est singulier et donc plus universel, en ce sens qu'il ne s'adresse pas seulement au groupe des disciples. Les lignes des évangiles pour les quatrième et cinquième dimanches après Pâques sont également reprises dans les cantates pour ces jours-là, ''Es ist in Ihrem Interesse, dass ich gehe.'' ('Il est dans votre intérêt que je m’en aille', Jean 16:7) et ''Bisher habt ihr nichts gebeten in minem Namen'' ('Jusqu'à présent vous n'avez rien demandé en mon nom, Jean 16:24). La Cantate pour le quatrième dimanche après l'Épiphanie, ''Jesus schläft, was soll ich hoffen'' (Jésus dort, que puis-je espérer), est également basée sur l'Évangile pour ce dimanche, mais les mots cités directement - ''Ihr Kleingläubigen'' (‘hommes de peu de foi’, Matthieu 8:26) - ne viennent pas au début mais dans le quatrième mouvement. Une deuxième façon de lier une Cantate à l'Évangile du jour est de prendre un texte tiré d'un autre endroit de la Bible qui aide à expliquer le passage de l'Évangile, dans l'esprit de la vieille maxime théologique ''BIBLIA SUI IPSIUS INTERPRES'' ('la Bible est son propre interprète'). Un exemple se trouve dans le quatrième mouvement de la cantate de l'Avent ''Nun komm, der Heiden Heirland'', où le verset ''Siehe, ice stehe vor der Tür und klopfe an'' ('Voici, je me tiens à la porte, et je frappe'', Apocalypse 3:20) illumine la signification de la marée de l'Avent. Dans la Cantate du deuxième dimanche après Pâques, le cri de l'Ancien Testament ''Du Hirte Israel, höre'' ('Donne l'oreille, o Berger d'Israël''), introduit une méditation sur l'Evangile du Bon Berger (Jean 10,11-16), et dans ''Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen'', la Cantate du troisième dimanche après Pâques, le lien avec l'Evangile (Jean 16 :16-23), dont le point culminant se trouve dans les mots ''Eure Traurigkeit soll in Freude verkehrt werden'' ('Ta douleur se changera en joie''), est soutenu par les mots des Actes des Apôtres, ''Wir müssen lurch viel Trübsal in das Reich Gottes eingehen'' ('Nous devons, par beaucoup de tribulations, entrer dans le royaume de Dieu''). Ce chant est le seul récitatif de la cantate et sert donc de dicton. Une troisième façon d'associer cantate et Évangile est par l’allusion directe. La Cantate pour le dimanche de Quinquagesima ''Du wahrer Gott et Davids Sohn'' en donne un exemple avec le plaidoyer ''Ach ! gehe nicht vorüber'' dans le récitatif pour ténor, qui se rapporte au récit de la guérison de l'aveugle (deuxième partie de l'Évangile pour le jour) en Luc 18, 31-43. La quatrième et dernière méthode d'association des deux est particulièrement significative. C'est lorsque la cantate prend la forme d'une cantate chorale, basée sur un choral, ou ''hymne de tempore'', sur un sujet approprié au caractère du jour de fête ou du dimanche en question. Pas moins de 22 (sur 33) des Cantates du recueil appartiennent à ce groupe. De par la nature des choses, dans une cantate chorale, l'association entre l'hymne et la lecture de l'Évangile sera plus générale et parfois carrément insaisissable, selon que le poème religieux madrigalien allié à l'hymne dans le texte de la Cantate fasse ou non une référence spécifique à l'Évangile du jour. Il est possible qu'un cycle d'hymnes chantés avant le sermon, et se rapportant au caractère du jour (comme la Cantate et le sermon lui-même), se soit déroulé parallèlement au cycle des cantates chorales, bien que chacune d'entre elles, individuellement, n'ait été considérée que comme la première partie, plus courte, du sermon dans son ensemble. Whenever I listen to Bach I am at peace. His music touches my heart and moves me like almost no other. And the Richter records are the finest there are - with all due respect to the great contributions of Herreweghe, Harnoncourt and so many more esteemed others.
I'm pretty sure Richter was a practicing Lutheran who, at the end of his life, asked to have a copy of Martin Luther's Smalcald Articles to read. His real belief in the Lutheran faith must have had an affect on his interpretation of Bach.

Often the strong German language is watered down out of a failure to embrace the counter intuitive thinking that is needed to understand the apparent oxymoronic juxtapositions which may seem uncomfortable at 1st glance..... what is 'simul iustus et peccator'? I've never heard Bach described as a "colossal talent"; I'm not sure I like it, but I do agree that he is the greatest composer, so maybe it's just a matter of words!

I love Bach`s cantatas,especially nos.61,82 are my all-time favourites,and my favourite performers are Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and of course Peter Schreier [sadly passed away on Christmas Day 2019],and he`s got a great tenor voice,also a conductor,as well as performing lieder [such as Brahms,Schubert,etc.],as well as opera [such as Mozart,Wagner,etc.],but I think he`s excellent on Bach,which is my all-time favourite composer,when I was 9 years old and knew his music,but I do miss him so much and he`s the best.

Bachs magischer Ton ist so stark, wie Karl Richter ihn spielen und dirigieren kann. Bach hob seine Gebete zu Gott durch seine Musik auf. Richter hob seine Gebete zu Gott durch Bach auf. Und ich erhebe meine Gebete zu Gott durch Richter und durch Bach. Kein schlechter Weg, um unsere Gedanken zu Gott zu erheben. Stimmst du nicht zu?

Richter’s interpretations are difficult to take in large doses. I grew up in the 60s when this would be the standard and the only way of playing Bach. Cantatas were performed during symphonic concerts by only slightly reduced symphonic orchestras used to playing Beethoven and Schumann. Nowadays we are blessed to have many choices of performance styles and one can chose style better fitting personal preferences. Stately Richter is not mine.
I love the rich and full sound of the choruses from Richter, Some of the more modern interpretations sounds so thin as to lose the grandeur of the composition. I grew up in the 10s and didn't really hear any bach growing up so theres no bias on my part ( other than the one of my own perception of course). Herreweghe is the next best for me, than Karajan

i think we need 2 be a little wary of the use of superlatives when describing performances of humans. at the time of recording, it was probly somewhat revolutionary, since mostly fairly austere recordings were available up to that point with occasional but not comprehensive in the sense of trying to cover the whole liturgical calendar! Yet even these more austere recordings had at least some exhilarating moments.... Such is the complexity of Bach's mind; yet he had enuf humility to say SOLI DEO gloria.

Sometimes, Bach makes me sad. It happens because he speaks about the death and the loss and mourning as he does in his Saint Matthew´s passion. But, in fact, that´s the subjective side of the music and its listening
Love Richter’s interpretations of these Sunday cantatas. Don’t care if he was a Christian or not. We don’t have to be a Christian to understand the awe some true believers (Bach?) felt in that Presence. Nothing to do w good & bad, with which qualities we are all amply furnished, but w wishing something higher than the (tragic) human condition. Because he believed, Mozart said Death had become his best friend. But what we hear in these masterworks is, above all, life & respect for its ever flowing rivers through our veins & souls.
Richter was a believer. Bach wrote these cantatas to glorify God. If you aren't a Christian you are simply missing out on appreciating/enjoying this music in a much richer dimension!!

I blieve Fischer=Dieskau was mitglied von Hitlerjugend, but let it not detract from his resonant voice. Unfortunately we have here among the commentators a "zealot" of the so called HIP( Historical Informed Performance, or better HUP = historical uninformed performance), a gang of HIPocrites, self appointed guardians of the musical morals and cultural fascists who intimidated directors to the point they abandoned baroque music, leaving it to founders of groups that played with obvious technical deficits and a café chantant musicality. But now the vice of the philological rigidity is over, we are tired of style experts with their scratchy instruments, thin choirs and orchestras, modest singers. We like and listen to Karl Richter, a genial interpreter and musician. Point.

Richter's performances were considered as not authentic by the "authentic Bach" movement, which isn't true at all apart from the instruments used here. Recent evidence has shown that Richter was right. Bach didn't use small ensembles but very often went for huge orchestras with up to 60 (!) singers. They also found that Bach was experimenting with quadrophonic sound, choirs positioned in the upper back, left, right and in front, musicians in the left and right wing of the church.

I love Richter, especially with Peter Schreier as tenor, but the choirs are too large such that the sound is muddied, a regrettably Romantic affectation untrue to the Baroque, though I'm grateful there are no adult trebles, resulting in a purer tone, though sadly too muddied as I said. If only that were the case with the solos, for as with all Bach recordings, I dislike adult trebles, as impure as their overdeveloped tonal quality is compared to the boys' purer one. More importantly, Lutheran Bach did not have them.

Some ads are so obnoxious they get thru our defences, but at least they direct a little remuneration to the artists who performed them, or maybe just the owners of the record labels..... soli Deo gloria! Karl Richter est un des pionniers de la Renaissance Barroque après la seconde guerre mondiale. Cependant il me paraît que des versions plus modernes, comme Kuijken, Bruggen et surtout Leonhardt / Harnoncourt sont plus belles et plus "respectueuses" de la volonté de Bach que Richter, qui me paraît malgré tout vieillissant.
Karl Richter est de très loin le plus beau cycle de Cantates jamais enregistré et de loin le plus respectueux de l'esprit des cantates. Nous pourrions développer et argumenter si vous le désirez mais à partir de la semaine prochaine :-)

La messe est restée le principal service de l'église luthérienne après la Réforme, et la musique a joué un rôle important dans sa célébration, tant le dimanche que les jours de fête. À l'époque de Bach, la cantate était la partie musicale la plus importante de l'office, appelée tout simplement " Hauptmusik " - " MusiK " - " la musique ". Il s'agissait d'un service en miniature dans le cadre de la Messe entière, composé d'un " dictum " (" il est dit dans les Écritures " : un texte biblique cité directement ou paraphrasé), un hymne strophique et un texte poétique madrigalien ; ce dernier, présenté sous forme de récitatifs et d'arias, donne une explication ("explicatio", littéralement "déroulement") du "dictum", de sa signification et de son application dans la vie chrétienne. Tout comme un opéra a besoin d'un livret, la condition préalable à la composition d'une cantate est donc un texte poétique, et ces textes sont un genre littéraire reconnu au XVIIIe siècle.
La forme de la Messe luthérienne a été établie bien avant l'époque de Bach, et la Cantate en était une composante importante non seulement à Leipzig mais partout ailleurs où l'on cultivait la musique figurative. Elle venait immédiatement après l'Evangile, lu par le ministre du culte, et avant le Credo. Si la Cantate était en deux parties, la deuxième partie était chantée après le sermon, qui prenait normalement son thème dans l'Évangile du jour. Cette position dans la liturgie reflète le lien étroit entre la cantate et l'Évangile - la principale lecture biblique du jour - et souligne sa fonction ; à sa manière, la cantate interprète le passage qui vient d'être lu et est donc une sorte de sermon en soi, utilisant le verset et la musique tout comme le prédicateur utilise la parole.
Le lien étroit entre la cantate et l'Évangile est variable. Elle était la plus étroite lorsque le texte de la Cantate commençait par une citation directe d'une phrase de l'Évangile. Un exemple est la Cantate pour le lundi de Pâques, ''Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden'' (‘’Demeurez avec nous, car le soir arrive’’, Luc 24,13-35), car ces paroles sont au cœur de l'Évangile du jour, le récit de la rencontre du Christ ressuscité avec deux de ses disciples sur le chemin d'Emmaüs. La cantate du mardi de Pâques est une méditation sur la salutation ''Friede sei mit euch'' ('Que la paix soit avec vous'', Luc 24:36-47), prononcée par Jésus lors de sa première apparition à un groupe plus nombreux de ses disciples après la Résurrection. La référence établit le lien avec la lecture de l'Evangile que l'assemblée vient d'entendre, mais la fonction de sermon de la Cantate est soulignée par le léger changement de texte dans la Cantate, où elle prend la forme ''Der Friede sei mit dir'' : ''Euch'' est pluriel mais ''dir'' est singulier et donc plus universel, en ce sens qu'il ne s'adresse pas seulement au groupe des disciples.
Les lignes des évangiles pour les quatrième et cinquième dimanches après Pâques sont également reprises dans les cantates pour ces jours-là, ''Es ist in Ihrem Interesse, dass ich gehe.'' ('Il est dans votre intérêt que je m’en aille', Jean 16:7) et ''Bisher habt ihr nichts gebeten in minem Namen'' ('Jusqu'à présent vous n'avez rien demandé en mon nom, Jean 16:24). La Cantate pour le quatrième dimanche après l'Épiphanie, ''Jesus schläft, was soll ich hoffen'' (Jésus dort, que puis-je espérer), est également basée sur l'Évangile pour ce dimanche, mais les mots cités directement - ''Ihr Kleingläubigen'' (‘hommes de peu de foi’, Matthieu 8:26) - ne viennent pas au début mais dans le quatrième mouvement.
Une deuxième façon de lier une Cantate à l'Évangile du jour est de prendre un texte tiré d'un autre endroit de la Bible qui aide à expliquer le passage de l'Évangile, dans l'esprit de la vieille maxime théologique ''BIBLIA SUI IPSIUS INTERPRES'' ('la Bible est son propre interprète'). Un exemple se trouve dans le quatrième mouvement de la cantate de l'Avent ''Nun komm, der Heiden Heirland'', où le verset ''Siehe, ice stehe vor der Tür und klopfe an'' ('Voici, je me tiens à la porte, et je frappe'', Apocalypse 3:20) illumine la signification de la marée de l'Avent. Dans la Cantate du deuxième dimanche après Pâques, le cri de l'Ancien Testament ''Du Hirte Israel, höre'' ('Donne l'oreille, o Berger d'Israël''), introduit une méditation sur l'Evangile du Bon Berger (Jean 10,11-16), et dans ''Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen'', la Cantate du troisième dimanche après Pâques, le lien avec l'Evangile (Jean 16 :16-23), dont le point culminant se trouve dans les mots ''Eure Traurigkeit soll in Freude verkehrt werden'' ('Ta douleur se changera en joie''), est soutenu par les mots des Actes des Apôtres, ''Wir müssen lurch viel Trübsal in das Reich Gottes eingehen'' ('Nous devons, par beaucoup de tribulations, entrer dans le royaume de Dieu''). Ce chant est le seul récitatif de la cantate et sert donc de dicton.
Une troisième façon d'associer cantate et Évangile est par l’allusion directe. La Cantate pour le dimanche de Quinquagesima ''Du wahrer Gott et Davids Sohn'' en donne un exemple avec le plaidoyer ''Ach ! gehe nicht vorüber'' dans le récitatif pour ténor, qui se rapporte au récit de la guérison de l'aveugle (deuxième partie de l'Évangile pour le jour) en Luc 18, 31-43.
La quatrième et dernière méthode d'association des deux est particulièrement significative. C'est lorsque la cantate prend la forme d'une cantate chorale, basée sur un choral, ou ''hymne de tempore'', sur un sujet approprié au caractère du jour de fête ou du dimanche en question. Pas moins de 22 (sur 33) des Cantates du recueil appartiennent à ce groupe. De par la nature des choses, dans une cantate chorale, l'association entre l'hymne et la lecture de l'Évangile sera plus générale et parfois carrément insaisissable, selon que le poème religieux madrigalien allié à l'hymne dans le texte de la Cantate fasse ou non une référence spécifique à l'Évangile du jour.
Il est possible qu'un cycle d'hymnes chantés avant le sermon, et se rapportant au caractère du jour (comme la Cantate et le sermon lui-même), se soit déroulé parallèlement au cycle des cantates chorales, bien que chacune d'entre elles, individuellement, n'ait été considérée que comme la première partie, plus courte, du sermon dans son ensemble.

Whenever I listen to Bach I am at peace. His music touches my heart and moves me like almost no other. And the Richter records are the finest there are - with all due respect to the great contributions of Herreweghe, Harnoncourt and so many more esteemed others.
I'm pretty sure Richter was a practicing Lutheran who, at the end of his life, asked to have a copy of Martin Luther's Smalcald Articles to read. His real belief in the Lutheran faith must have had an affect on his interpretation of Bach.

Often the strong German language is watered down out of a failure to embrace the counter intuitive thinking that is needed to understand the apparent oxymoronic juxtapositions which may seem uncomfortable at 1st glance..... what is 'simul iustus et peccator'? I've never heard Bach described as a "colossal talent"; I'm not sure I like it, but I do agree that he is the greatest composer, so maybe it's just a matter of words!
@@princeandrey I would call it a poor choice of words, but it is possible it is due to limited command of English and thus inability to see it sounds awkward to say the least.
I love Bach`s cantatas,especially nos.61,82 are my all-time favourites,and my favourite performers are Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and of course Peter Schreier [sadly passed away on Christmas Day 2019],and he`s got a great tenor voice,also a conductor,as well as performing lieder [such as Brahms,Schubert,etc.],as well as opera [such as Mozart,Wagner,etc.],but I think he`s excellent on Bach,which is my all-time favourite composer,when I was 9 years old and knew his music,but I do miss him so much and he`s the best.

Why is Christmas on December 25?
Since there is no evidence that the birth of Jesus Christ occurred on December 25, why is Christmas celebrated on this date? The Encyclopædia Britannica says that church leaders probably chose it ““to coincide with the pagan Roman festival marking the ‘birthday of the unconquered sun,”’” at the time of the winter solstice. According to The Encyclopedia Americana, many scholars believe that this was done ““in order to make Christianity more meaningful to pagan converts.””
When Was Jesus Born?
The Bible does not give a specific date for the birth of Jesus Christ, as these reference works show:
““The true birth date of Christ is unknown.””-New Catholic Encyclopedia.““The exact date of Christ’s birth is not known.””-Encyclopedia of Early Christianity.While the Bible does not directly answer the question, ‘When was Jesus born?’ it does describe two events surrounding his birth that lead many to conclude that he was not born on December 25.

The registration. Shortly before Jesus was born, Caesar Augustus issued a decree ordering ““all the inhabited earth to be registered.”” Everyone had to register in ““his own city,”” which might have required a journey of a week or more. (Luke 2:1-3) That order-probably made to support taxation and military conscription-would have been unpopular at any time of year, but it is unlikely that Augustus would have provoked his subjects further by forcing many of them to make long trips during the cold winter.The sheep. Shepherds were ““living out of doors and keeping watches in the night over their flocks.”” (Luke 2:8) The book Daily Life in the Time of Jesus notes that flocks lived in the open air from ““the week before the Passover [late March]”” through mid-November. It then adds: ““They passed the winter under cover; and from this alone it may be seen that the traditional date for Christmas, in the winter, is unlikely to be right, since the Gospel says that the shepherds were in the fields.””

We can estimate when Jesus was born by counting backward from his death on Passover, Nisan 14 in the spring of the year 33 C.E. (John 19:14-16) Jesus was about 30 years old when he began his three-and-a-half-year ministry, so he was born in the early fall of 2 B.C.E.-Luke 3:23.

I listen and listen and the endless kontrol19 news stories slowly vanish from my exhausted mind. Sweet.
Richter’s interpretations are difficult to take in large doses. I grew up in the 60s when this would be the standard and the only way of playing Bach. Cantatas were performed during symphonic concerts by only slightly reduced symphonic orchestras used to playing Beethoven and Schumann. Nowadays we are blessed to have many choices of performance styles and one can chose style better fitting personal preferences. Stately Richter is not mine.
I love the rich and full sound of the choruses from Richter, Some of the more modern interpretations sounds so thin as to lose the grandeur of the composition. I grew up in the 10s and didn't really hear any bach growing up so theres no bias on my part ( other than the one of my own perception of course). Herreweghe is the next best for me, than Karajan

i think we need 2 be a little wary of the use of superlatives when describing performances of humans. at the time of recording, it was probly somewhat revolutionary, since mostly fairly austere recordings were available up to that point with occasional but not comprehensive in the sense of trying to cover the whole liturgical calendar! Yet even these more austere recordings had at least some exhilarating moments.... Such is the complexity of Bach's mind; yet he had enuf humility to say SOLI DEO gloria.

Sometimes, Bach makes me sad. It happens because he speaks about the death and the loss and mourning as he does in his Saint Matthew´s passion. But, in fact, that´s the subjective side of the music and its listening

Love Richter’s interpretations of these Sunday cantatas. Don’t care if he was a Christian or not. We don’t have to be a Christian to understand the awe some true believers (Bach?) felt in that Presence. Nothing to do w good & bad, with which qualities we are all amply furnished, but w wishing something higher than the (tragic) human condition. Because he believed, Mozart said Death had become his best friend. But what we hear in these masterworks is, above all, life & respect for its ever flowing rivers through our veins & souls.

Richter was a believer. Bach wrote these cantatas to glorify God. If you aren't a Christian you are simply missing out on appreciating/enjoying this music in a much richer dimension!!
hmmmm ok! I guess that's why BAch wrote SDG@ end of every composition; 'to God alone the glory' Doesn't it make u wonder why such a profoundly talented mind would so eschew applause, in a day & age where applause in euro concerts seems to just go on ad nauseam... detracts from the beauty of the music & i'm sure would disturb Bach's eternal rest!

mostly for the bass. Might be a few by Theo Adam as i recall from my 5x5 archiv boxed sets of records.
I blieve Fischer=Dieskau was mitglied von Hitlerjugend, but let it not detract from his resonant voice. Kids usually get directed to do things by their parents from an early age, whether for good or bad reasons, often just fear...(of worse things than Of Missing Out (FOMO)). ridiculous!

Unfortunately we have here among the commentators a "zealot" of the so called HIP( Historical Informed Performance, or better HUP = historical uninformed performance), a gang of HIPocrites, self appointed guardians of the musical morals and cultural fascists who intimidated directors to the point they abandoned baroque music, leaving it to founders of groups that played with obvious technical deficits and a café chantant musicality. But now the vice of the philological rigidity is over, we are tired of style experts with their scratchy instruments, thin choirs and orchestras, modest singers. We like and listen to Karl Richter, a genial interpreter and musician. Point.
Hypocrites are people who offend the interpreters who they do not like, but do not accept critics to whom they place as the only possible interpreters. Fascism is to refuse any confrontation with those who have a different idea. You are not a music lover, but just a fanatical flatterer.
And now please let the air out and try to breathe normally. Feel better?
Who are you to judge my musical preference? The future of baroque music is in the hand of ensembles with modern instrument, the fetish of original instruments i surpassed.

Now I can't hear anything other than Richter's Bach...
Richter's performances were considered as not authentic by the "authentic Bach" movement, which isn't true at all apart from the instruments used here.
Recent evidence has shown that Richter was right. Bach didn't use small ensembles but very often went for huge orchestras with up to 60 (!) singers.
They also found that Bach was experimenting with quadrophonic sound, choirs positioned in the upper back, left, right and in front, musicians in the left and right wing of the church.
That little known fact just made my day. So, the scholarly Richter was "authentic" after all. I hope you heard this Karl. Now you can laugh.

I love Richter, especially with Peter Schreier as tenor, but the choirs are too large such that the sound is muddied, a regrettably Romantic affectation untrue to the Baroque, though I'm grateful there are no adult trebles, resulting in a purer tone, though sadly too muddied as I said. If only that were the case with the solos, for as with all Bach recordings, I dislike adult trebles, as impure as their overdeveloped tonal quality is compared to the boys' purer one. More importantly, Lutheran Bach did not have them.

too bad we can't afford the subscription! U can train yrself to tune out at least a little. Some ads are so obnoxious they get thru our defences, but at least they direct a little remuneration to the artists who performed them, or maybe just the owners of the record labels..... soli Deo gloria! Not always abt the money & inconvenience is often unavoidable! C'est la vie.

Karl Richter est un des pionniers de la Renaissance Barroque après la seconde guerre mondiale. Cependant il me paraît que des versions plus modernes, comme Kuijken, Bruggen et surtout Leonhardt / Harnoncourt sont plus belles et plus "respectueuses" de la volonté de Bach que Richter, qui me paraît malgré tout vieillissant.
Karl Richter est de très loin le plus beau cycle de Cantates jamais enregistré et de loin le plus respectueux de l'esprit des cantates. Nous pourrions développer et argumenter si vous le désirez mais à partir de la semaine prochaine :-)

Il semble que Karl Richter soit l'un des plus grands interprètes baroques avant 1960 : depuis Gardiner, Jacobs et Leonhardt ont faits des progrès considérables.
Oui dans un style différent :-) Richter et son équipe touche notre coeur, les autres pas encore : Cantata BWV 82 : Ich Habe Genug (4:10:14) & (4:20:07)
Le versions plus modernes, comme vous dites, à mon avis n'ont pas d"âme. Karl Richter sait transmettre de grandes émotions. N'est-il plus à la mode? C'est parce que l'exécution de la musique baroque a empiré.
