This is the right tempo for the great opening chorus. Fifty years later the norm is much faster and wrong.

(Coro): O ewiges Feuer, o Ursprung der Liebe Maybe this is too slow, with undoubtedly too many voices, for purist Rifkin. But the first night I heard this, late at night, with all lights out in the mid-60's, and eyes closed in bed, I had the sensation of seeing flames dancing. Try replicating that with your one-to-a-part, and significantly faster "Truer to Bach" performance. Richter's cantata recordings rule in many respects; perhaps Bach would have concurred

Compare with the Bach Stiftung performance, much faster. And the flames dance himmlisch like hell! I don't know of any 1VPP performance of BWV 34.

I equally like the Bach-stiftung performance of the BWV 34. This is one of my favourite modern performances of this cantata. Rudolf Lutz has done a great job with Bach cantatas. He should record the whole of Bach's choral work on cd. At least the cantatas.

Kuijken and La Petite Bande have recorded it 1VPP, but it needs a little more fire than they give it. (You certainly can hear all the parts well, though.) I'd like to hear the Ricercar Consort/Pierlot, Concerto Copenhagen/Mortensen, Gli Angeli Genève/MacLeod or (especially) Concerto Stella Matutina do it.

      Dear Annam Cancarini:
Karl Richter was a fundamental piece to revive Bach.
In my modest opinion this cantata is one of the most beautiful of its composition. If we add to Anna Reynolds (mezzo-soprano) and Peter Schreier (tenor) ... then we touched the sky with our hands.
      Regards....

Hi. I agree that Karl Richter is the best conductor for most J. S. Bach music. But he is also a great « organist-pianist ». His rendition of the Harpsichord solo ( from what I know Bach is the first composer to put a « piano » solo in a concerto) in 5th Brandenburg concerto is beyond believe. And I don’t mind about the 1960s sound of the harpsichord. It is historical musical jewel. The video is still avalaible on TH-cam.
