My genius 14yr old replaced my wife's key fob. Of course after he did, she couldn't start the car. Fortunately somewhere in the back of my mind i remembered this problem... and i held on to the old fob. Had to pretty much cut the old one apart to get out the RFID without damaging it (mine looked like a gray cylinder with a clear end with copper inside). Dropped it into the new housing and everything works like a charm!
Thanks for the video - Every once in a while the 50yr old man gets to be smarter than the know it all teen - Thanks for helping me win this round!!!

Just wanted to say "Thanks, you saved me roughly $75 !"
The only thing I ran into unexpected (at least, when working off of MEMORY of your video) was that the little RFID chips were actually glued into the housing on both the bad and new keys. That made the process take a few minutes longer than I expected and I pretty much damaged that little plastic housing more than I intended to. However, my plan is to go back in and glue the chips in place again (just as soon as I get some glue in the house that ISN'T super-glue).
My wife doubted me the entire time. So glad this info turned out to be legit !!

This method works just did it today! Got the key cut at True Value hardware store for $10 , aftermarket FOB off Amazon was $18 prime. , for less than $30 got a brand new key FOB , remember , you must remove the RFID chip from the old Key Fob and install the new one. Great Video, dealership wanted $147 for everything.

Thank you. I was going to pry the little RFID "cover" off but wasn't sure what the RFID chip looked like. The "cover" started to bend slightly and freaked me out thinking it may be the chip. Now I know what is what! Mine broke very similarly, so this is a life saver. Thanks!

Thanks for the post! I followed these instructions to replace my '07 Honda Ridgeline key that had broken off. I ordered a replacement key online. At first the Honda dealer would not cut my replacement key but wanted to charge me $140 to replace with their key. After some discussion, they reluctantly cut my provided key. Saved about $125. Thanks again!

This is a semi-helpful video. Would have been better if you actually showed how to extract the RFID chip. However, what I found to be the bigger problem, is the part of getting the key copied. In my area, there is no one that will charge less than $25 for just the "laser" cutting of the key. Most likely they realize they are losing out on charging the programming and housing replacement.
However, what I found to avoid the copying cost altogether is to just buy a new housing unit with no blank key. They make them so you can use the old key. This was great. Only cost $9 on Amazon.

Thanks. It would have been nice if you had started filming as you were taking apart the old key, though, especially so we could see how you got the rfid chip out. I've seen other videos in which people have had to mangle the old fob to get it out. Everyone I've seen had a lot of glue holding the chip down, which I believe is the same with my key, since I cannot just pop it out. By the way, you can buy just new key fobs in which the old key blade can still be used in the new fog, saving a whole lot of money.

In this day and age I'd be surprised if a locksmith would do the work at a reasonable price. Yes, I've already tried Walmart and Ace hardware. Walmart's machine didn't work, and Ace wants to sell their 89 dollar replacement key (which doesn't allow for wireless car entry). Ace refused to try and cut my ebay replacement fob/case/keyblade.

The piece is both metal and housing that gets re-keyed. Fixing vs a bandaid which I have seen a shell being sold to kinda fix. In my mind a shell is temporary and adds bulk.

I bought a replacement outer housing and transferred the "innards" (the metal key and the black inside case which houses the circuit (RFID) and the battery). Works great since it was just the outer case that broke. Oh, and I replaced the battery while I had it apart since it was 14 years old. Thank you, Romans6 for the battery replacement video...nice and short and clear.

Lisa Gibbs hey Lisa I have the same problem. The shell broke itself. I bought a replacement cheaply and it didn’t work because the inside shell want cut wide enough for the metro key part to fit. But if as you say the shell was only broken on yours and you fixed it trying another new shell that’s correct should fix my problem.
