Ok. I got it!
1. Use NVENC h264 NEW
2. Minimum useless animation
3. Disable preview screen in OBS
4. Always launch OBS as Administrator
Also make sure your bit rate is not too large for your upload speed
Also make sure Game Mode is On. That was a change that was made to Windows in 1903 and OBS is now included on the list of things to prioritze when it's on. EposVox went over it in one of his videos.
What's a good bit rate for a standard decent build? Dont want it to be too high so that mobile viewers have no issues :)
@@adamklase8547 bitrate is determined more by internet connection speeds, not hardware. Run a speedtest to determine your upload/ download speeds on your internet connection and youtube a few different recommendations based on your upload speeds to select your CBR bitrate.

you can also right click on OBS , "properties", "compatibility" tab then look for a box to tick that says "run this program as an administrator"
that will automatically run obs as administrator when you open it with a left click

I’m so glad I found this. I’ve been streaming the past couple of days and it was so looking terrible due to dropped frames that I was thinking about giving it up. Hopefully this makes my stream much higher quality and people will find it enjoyable

Dude... so here's the thing. I had everything set to run as administrator, not just OBS so I was getting GPU encoding overloaded no matter what I tried and I was getting so infuriated by this. This video helped me realize that turning off run as administrator for my games and just leaving Game mode on would help! Now I've gone from 5% overload to none!
What pisses me off is that I scoured the internet for literal MONTHS looking for a solution only to find out that it was as simple as turning off administrative properties for my games and leaving game mode on.
OMG the opening of OBS in admin saved me so much - i was ready to drop a lot of cash on a better GPU thinking i needed it and it turns out this stopped the frames dropping. What a legend. Thank you so much sir

Dude thank you. You saved me from buying a second PC for streaming. I have an i9 9900k and a 1080ti streaming apex at 1080p. My stream was literally dropping half it's frames. It was unwatchable, the run as admin trick completely fixed it. Thanks again. So many reddit posts and videos didn't mention this at all.

I've seen about a thousand videos about live streaming, this was by far the most helpful one I've seen so far.
If you want to make OBS use that setting always; right click on the desktop icon, select Preferences, select the Compatibility tab, check the box for "Run this program as an administrator". Now you don't have to remember to do it every time :)
Mine didnt have a "preferences" option. So I had to right click the desktop icon and click "properties" then on the "shortcut" tab click "advanced" then tick the "run as administrator" box and click ok. Dont forget to click "apply" to finish up 👍

I also want to call out that you should begin by opening OBS in Admin before opening the game. This can ensure Windows doesn’t already have the game prioritized before you open OBS. Thanks for the additional info breakdown on NVENC & the tests.

I am an incredibly knit-picky streamer, and I'm running a powerful build with a GARBAGE 1660ti (comparatively) my stream struggles solely because of my GPU, and I NEEDED this video. I like streaming in 1080 60 despite the weak, single PC setup, and I struggle with apex the most. Hoping to God this works and can't wait to try it out!

You cleared up NVENC for me! I'm now using that to encode my streams on my GTX 970 and they look and run soooooo much smoother on Twitch. From 720p/30 on low graphics settings for Fortnite, to 1080p/60 on medium. A dramatic improvement! I wish I knew this last year!

@@zinput Yeah, that's an old one! I'm looking forward to upgrading to a Ryzen 3600 in the next month or so. I started on TH-cam but just moved to Twitch. TheTiredDadPlayz. I usually do Fortnite with a guy from work and one of my kids and his friends. Then I end up going War Thunder. I just made this setting change last week.

Harris youre a god. The run as administrator issue fixed my Ark streaming instantly, and "allocating OBS 20% of GPU and the rest goes to the game" was exactly what I wanted to happen, but didnt know how to make it happen as Ark was just throttling my GPU and hogging all the resources. Youre a jet.
why have i never thought about disabling my preview? I literally dont even look at it the entire time.

Does your Twitch Preview count too from creator dashboard?
If you have an AMD GPU, then look for H264/AVC Encoder instead of NVENC. It is the AMD Encoder, and is also a separate chip on the card. (In both cases you must have a card new enough to support it, but typically anything in that last 3 -4 years does)

Good info. Here's another streamer tip, (if you are not already doing) all of your stingers, trans, and media encode them ahead in Apple ProRes 4444 uncompressed, this will avoid cpu/GPU from NVDEC a.k.a decode to free up processing. Great video!👍

Go with a gtx 1650 is more powerful than a 1060 not by much but it is or gtx 1660 witch is a little faster than a 1070 or a rtx 2060. If you don't care about raytracing then go with a 5700tx

Great stuff. I took the tips and applied them on my Ryzen 5 1400 quad core and EVGA 1060 3g system and it improved a lot. Goodbye 400 dropped frames in 2 hours.
The only issue is I'm still dropping frames. I'm hardwired in to my modem/router combo and all that good stuff (can't replace that because it's not mine to replace). In a 2 hour stream I dropped 113 frames on a fairly simple game to run (Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4) and I can't figure out what it could be that's still making me drop those frames.
And just like that, you gave me the best tip I can get in a long while. Frame drops are always the reason why I don't stream PC games and this made a huge difference. THANK YOU!!
nvenc is nvidia specific, however AMD cards also have their own encoder compatible with obs called H264/AVC

IMMEDIATE SUB. I can't believe that one trick - run as administrator - COMPLETELY fixed my stream. I was getting something like 10-13 frames playing Overwatch on a 2070 Super. Tried EVERYTHING. Dude, you are an absolute lifesaver.
Don't wanna contradict the guy on the "Run as Admin" recommendation, but there's a catch that might have been overlooked. Rather than just the priority (which helps a lot in terms of resource allocation), there's something that happens when he goes and cranks the settings. I've faced this issue on my own with a 3950x/RTX2080 (all water cooled) system.
My OBS was dropping frames because I was capturing at 1440p but downscaling to 1080p, so on top of the game capturing, the camera, and the encoding there was the downscaling (CPU under 30%).
The reason for the downscaling was to save on bitrate since Facebook goes on 1080p60 (~6000kbps).
So, gotta make sure your resolution, canvas and output are the same if you don't want your system to waste resources in upscaling or downscaling, thus dropping frames.
Since I changed my output resolution to the same as my canvas and capture 1440p, dropping frames issues have gone

I was down scaling from 1980x1080 to 1080x720 (something along this lines) and can now stream or record with muuuuuch better frames
yep I realized that when my output was on 1080p and my ingame reso is always at 3440x???? cause my screen is a 34" ultrawidescreen thats why

Omg this changed my stream! I recently moved and my internet is super low here but my pc is very powerful. I got very disappointed when my stream turned out very pixelated and I wanted to stop streaming. This setting turned my stream in 1080 with low internet and no lagging. Thanks!!

Why not just set OBS to high priority in advanced settings
that doesnt matter it just ups how much ram and all that but when you have it on admin it priortises obs more than game

Changing the game and/or OBS priority from normal can actually cause it to perform worse. I was seeing dropped frames and choppy audio when either of them were prioritized higher. Generally you don't need to do this ever.
Secret tip, acknowledged during time: ctrl+alt+canc, open task manager and search a program named "spooler subsystem" or something, with a printer as icon. Idk but I can play (and stream) from medium settings ingame to ultra settings (sorry for my english, I usually talk spaghetti)

dude running obs as an administrator saved me. I have a pretty decent budget setup (pretty much the intel version of his budget build) and I used to lag randomly in-game until I tried this, thank god I found this video

It doesnt actually use your GPU, it uses the built-in video encoder, which shows as GPU usage.

If you check in task manager (which i have done) it shows the 3d graphical thingy as one thing, then it shows the encoder usage as one, then it adds those too come to a total usage. Isnt that right? @@gameraxel4388 next to it using part of the 2d cores on the main chip it will also contribute to power limit which means running an overclocked gpu you're gonna have to raise that and risk loosing your gpu

Akuma i mean, it’s good if you stream 1080p60fps at minimum game details and you are using AMD VCE (that is more powerful that NVENC btw). But if you need to streaming at High settings for games I recommend you a more powerful AMD gpu. REMEMBER AMD>NVIDIA

Super-helpful. Much better than me swimming through the various settings screen, hitting buttons at random.
I'm glad that single PC streaming is becoming more of a thing. Lower barrier to entry for people just trying to get into streaming. However, I still love my 2PC setup because it really simplifies things. Even with running OBS as admin in the past, certain games just would not cooperate with OBS running while the game was running (and this was on an extremely beefy system). There was also issues with capturing monitors/windows/game processes in certain situations within OBS.
With a dual PC setup, it's as simple as either using NDI to send video and/or audio over your local network to your 2nd PC or sending out a mirrored video signal into a capture card on the 2nd PC. I use NDI Scan Convertor which takes up very little CPU resources and send audio over the network utilizing VoiceMeeter's network protocol VBAN. With all of this, you just can focus on running only the game on your main PC while your 2nd PC takes care of all the OBS stuff. Again, it isn't a matter of making the stream "look better", it's more of a quality of life improvement that also further limits rendering, encoding, and other screen capturing issues on a single PC setup that you might encounter in OBS.

@@vicvic9257 He was using a GTX 1660 and Ryzen 5 to demonstrate that you don't need a beefy computer to stream on one pc. After doing everything he needed to, he just switched back to his regular setup pc and recorded the outro.

To have it "always open as admin", right click the Streamlabs OBS shortcut, then click on properties. From there, go to the "Compatability" tab, and then towards the bottom, there should be a box you can check next to "Run this program as an Administrator".
SLOBS is asking for admin permission on every start up anyway (at least for me)

Try AMD's VCE. You can enable it in OBS or stream using Radeon Relive.

You should make the change from SLOBS to OBS regardless. SLOBS was using 30% of my CPU and OBS uses only 5% or lower CPU. They share a lot of the same stuff so you can copy your code in SLOBS and add it to OBS. I highly recommend it if you're struggling using SLOBS.

Tempz it’s in the properties of your scenes in SLOBS. It shows you where the files are. Usually in your roaming profile.
Spent a total of 10 hours all over the inter trying to find out why my newer beefy build was giving OBS a hard time, and guess who fixes it? Streamdaddi himself. Why didn't I start here?

You can also use ProcessLasso to manually force certain CPU priorities to processes and run your game client and OBS at 'Above Normal'. Helps a TON.

I switched to Slobs temporarily because I thought the program itself was rendering poorly. It seemed to run better but I prefer the OG OBS instead of slobs. I'll have to check these settings and so a test run. Thanks for this
I’m a bit confused. I just started streaming but having trouble with my game lagging but stream is running fine. Does this help with game lag or stream lag?
This is entirely focused on stream lag, if you're dealing with in game lag you should probably lower your settings in game to increase performance
