    Damn, I remember watching your videos, years back when I was first injured(t-5 complete). Thinking this guys crazy…no way he can be this positive about such a nightmare of an injury. Well I finally got my fire back, and realized it’s all about how we react…not the injury itself. Transferring into my old lifted work truck now, passed my driver exam…and dropped the 100 lbs of misery weight I first put on. Life is amazing again. Appreciate you showing the way, when so many of us lose it early on. Glad to see you grinding still 🙏 much love from California

      I am in a powerchair (peripheral nerve damage) and have hip degeneration. Got referred to NHS pain clinic. They told me to see a psychologist, as if I can think my hip degeneration away. I had a friend with the same condition who got nerve injections, but I get treated like cap.

    You made taking apart your chair so easy! Definitely have adapted well😮🎉. Lol i was laughing when you were gripping the wheel because my 1st thought was "oh no,is he going to lock the steering wheel up",ive done this before because i accidently turned my steering wheel to hard trying to make it "straight"(i have ocd apparently)😂. The steering wheel helps a ton. I can drive and transfer in and out of some tricky coups, Suvs and vans if I'm driving. On the other hand, I use transfer boards if I'm a passenger these days. Being in my late 40's is one reason and a long hospital stay that sapped so much strength is another, but you get used to driving and having the steering wheel to grab. Without it, I feel lost as a passenger and simply cannot get out of anything low anymore when I'm not driving. I basically had to get dragged out of a friend's coupe as a passenger one day. Even with a board, the seat felt like it was two feet below my chair. Which likely it was. Of course, If I was driving, I would have figured out how to get into my chair somehow. 😄

    Nice video! When I transfer into my car I put my legs in first and then transfer
    it makes it easier and quicker for me. I keep a blanket over my passenger seat to protect my seat where I put my wheelchair. I keep a wheelchair in my front seat at all times so when I get in I don’t have to break chair down, same thing when I get home I have my indoor chair ready to go all I have to do is transfer into it. Great channel

    T7 Complete para. 66 yo athletic shape.
    I have looked at some SUVs but believe for me the wagon is the way to go. You get the trunk space so when with someone the don’t need to disassemble the chair. When alone the lower seat makes it a lot easier to get in and out dealing with the chair. At this age I’m doing everything to delay total should surgery. Currently I drive a 2006 Volvo V70R. I’m holding out for an EV wagon that works. Love the videos.

    One tip, after trashing the door sills of my first few cars getting the chair in. If you just get a wooden stick or thin pole and attach or wrap a piece of leather sheet to it. Essentially making what resembles a flag then just keep it in the area between the seat and door and then just roll it out and flip the sheet down over the door sill.. you can now drag and bash the chair against the sill without having to smash the hell out of the paintwork
    Oh and you can get dog liners for the trunk with a section that flips down to completely protect the trunk sill and cost about 30 bucks.

    T5 with no sensation to speak of. Have this in the 2017 (same color even. Your wife has good taste!) that I bought and put 1,500 miles on before becoming paralyzed. I bought a wheelchair accessible van because I missed the chance to go to a rehab. Did you originally have issues that you don't have now? I honestly feel at this point a major thing holding me back from even a sliding board transfer is the weight I've gained. Do you still feel the actual difference between hunger and satiation? I feel like my hunger cues are growling or just being bored, and I was 115 before all this and likely tipped over 200. With me not getting to go to rehab twice that I've tried now due to insurance, I feel like I've really been screwed. I'm about to be 32, spent the 31st in a nursing home before my dad got me from across the country just to honestly just stick me in a hospital bed. Obviously under those conditions, it's impossible to visit my daughter out of state, and home health PT has said it is. I just don't know what I'd do for changes and sleeping with requiring a hoyer lift that needs to go under a bed.

  • @lep38918
    @lep38918 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been paralyzed for seven years now, T7 incomplete. I have a Volkswagen Passat. I don't drive it much and I never drive it without having someone with me to deal with the wheelchair. I'm horrible at taking the wheelchair apart and putting it together when I'm inside the car. I'm 6'1'' so the frame of my wheelchair is long. It is difficult to bring the long frame of the wheelchair inside of the car. I do things about the same way Brian does it. Maybe with more practice I can get better at it but it's not easy. Another thing I can't figure out is how to transfer without a transfer board. I've always had to use a board to transfer. I have bad muscle spasms and my legs kick and shake so that makes transfers a lot harder for me to do but I wish I knew how to do it without a board.

    • @ParalyzedLiving
      @ParalyzedLiving  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I ditched the slide board early on since it was too much to carry around. I’m a T1 complete so if I can do it I’m sure you can! It’ll just take practice. I too used to have HORRIBLE spasms and I know how hard they can make things.

    • @ParalyzedLiving
      @ParalyzedLiving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No it doesn’t affect the car's finish - just protects it since the film takes any impacts. What i use is 14 mil thickness (from Amazon) and it’s outdoor rated so it holds up well. To clarify, I had my daily drivers side skirt professionally wrapped just like the rear bumper on this SUV. I use this material on my chair’s frame and just used it here since I knew I wouldn’t regularly be using this vehicle.
