  • Today's video is the review of the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4, the brand new addition to the Saucony Endorphin lineup. This fourth iteration keeps the PwrrunPB PEBA-based midsole and the famous very flexible nylon plate. It adds comfort to the upper and much more.

I’m a 6’2 runner who weighs 215 pounds and ran my first sub 4 marathon in the speed 3s last fall. Only shoe of my four marathons that gave me zero foot pain, and although I run with a slightly lower cadence in them the bounce and responsiveness allow me to hold 3:30-3:45 marathon pace wonderfully. Carbon plates are super unforgiving over half marathon distance for slower runners and runners with foot problems, so the nylon plate and super foam of the speeds is a perfect race day solution for many in that boat.

This is the exact same problem I have had with every Saucony shoe, heel lift due to their heel pocket/collars. Throw in that super stiff/hard back of the heel pocket with only felt covering it and it's a recipe for disaster/blisters. And then it gets worse if they make the upper/laces too stretchy, you get halfway through a run and the heel lift gets worse. I literally wore a hole in the inner heel pocket on my Speed V1's cause I loved that shoe so much and just dealt with the heel lift. Speed 3 was basically an over priced daily trainer since I couldn't trust it and the midsole was too soft/sink in. All they need to do is put in a bit of extra padding right in the back of the heel pocket above the rounded part of the heel to lock it in, but not too high to cause achilles pressure.

I weigh 75-80 kilos for 183cm and I mostly run in Speed 3 these days and I have 0 stability issues with these shoes. Speed 2 were a nightmare on this aspect :) Good to hear the 4 don't change much, I like the 3 as they are, I'll be getting them on heavy discounts next year or so. Thanks for the review!

I'm a slow runner, finished at 5:29, but a PR for me!:-) my 1st full marathon was in 2017 at 5:55, and had plantar fasciitis right after...so happy as it was injury-free this time! Thanks

Deviate Nitro 3 verses will be included interesting when that comes out. The grip you mentioned on Saucony shoes (I have three pairs) appears to get a pass when actually IMO more weighting could and should be given to it by reviewers. Excellent review. Thank you!

Hi Alex. Thank you for your honest review of this much anticipated update. I’ve had all 3 versions of the Speed and the 3 is my favourite and my current pair have just 150 miles on them so won’t be rushing out to buy the V4 especially at the £180 launch price here in the Uk which is way too much. In fact I’m more interested in the upcoming Triumph 22 with its new PWRun PB midsole. Ian 🇬🇧

A small bit towards the shoe fund. Thanks for the review. To my mind it is an out and out daily now.. I myself am using the speed 3 as a daily , if I choose to pick up a 4 down the road it will be for my Z2 work .

Thank you for mentioning- lighter / heavier runners, people have no idea how different shoe can feel for heavier runner - speed 3 for instance is not the same for me (100kg runner) as for runner of 60kg - one will love it other will hate it - and that based only on weight nothing else ...

I have hesitated on the Endorphin Speed because I find myself doing well with firmer shoes. I've been using the Hyperion Max and I'm thinking about the Hyperion Max 2 or Boston 12 if I go with a plate.

Loved the Speed 2. Speed 3 midsole became mushy after an hour or so of running.. Speed 4 sounds like a good long distance easy day shoe.. Is the shoe also wider inside (insole) or just in the outsole?

Beware of the upper especially if you have broad feet. My Speed 3 split at the sides where it joins the midsole within 4 weeks. I also put both big toes through. The midsole is also not as good as ZoomX or Lightstrike.

I could not land midfoot in v3 and its mushiness aggravated hip flexor issues. Felt heel/bottom heavy. Do I try v4 or is it going to be a similar slog of a ride? I feel like I’m going to have to move on from it soon to the Pro or something else altogether. V1 was my fave but too unstable.

Sorry if the message wasn’t shared in the right way. I just feel like some shoes work better for lighter people whereas some others work better for heavier people. It’s all very relative when it comes to giving ranges and I certainly didn’t want to offend anyone with that remark. Thanks a lot for your honest comment

It's not the weight. It is the power going down. I am light and slow and often run long runs at around 210 W. If I was heavy or faster the W would be more. Some midsoles / plates just need to be compressed more to work.
