The Epiphone will sound better and more mellow over time, after it is broken in, since it is SOLID WOOD construction like its Gibson counterpart. That's the key factor in tonal quality.

Maybe 2 months since I tuned in here and Whoo!! Chris McKee has learnt a blues lick! Even a couple of bends in there and a string snap. How long has this been going on?
It's a good addition to the demo's along with the bass runs and the old standard thing he's been doing for years. Good spectrum.
I expected the Epiphone to come out on top here, but it was disappointing. The Gibson is way better on a lot of levels except for that hole in the top.

Thank you, Chris and Cooper, for great advice and evaluation as always. My recent experiences with Breedlove Guitars designed in Bend, Oregon, built overseas, returned to Bend for setup and shipping to dealers has been without complaint on my part (3 instruments). I have noticed that the open-pore finish on the one (advertised as semi-gloss) is more resonant, warm and open than the gloss finish with same specifications. (And it was seventy bucks cheaper, but did not have the nicely padded gig bag, so I make that an equal price comparison.) I concur with Chris regarding L.R. Baggs electronics v. Fishman, though I am impressed with the Cole Clark electronic amplification system (as demonstrated on TH-cam by that nation's premier blues guitarist).

PS - As far as the resonance I agree with Cooper, regarding that - the Gibson's satin / nitro finish should definitely enhance that, I'm sure they're not spraying nitro on these Epiphones, so I'm assuming whatever inexpensive paint they are using to keep costs down is most probably playing a huge factor on that top.

Great job guys. I thought the Epiphone sounded better early with the flat picking portion. But the Gibson came back pretty strong during the finger (flesh?) picking portion and the bass was a bit more pronounced then too. Hard to compare maple to walnut bodies directly. I fingerpick using my nails as picks, and have been interested in a Gibson walnut Jumbo since I couldn't find a J-15 I liked a few years back. Jumbo guitars are my favorite; I own a rosewood Gibson J-200, a '94 laminated maple EJ-200, and the sunburst version Epiphine IBG J-200 (since May '21). I only play before pay, and I've heard enough to want to find and play for myself the walnut G-200. I swapped out the treble strings on all three I own to .013 and .017 (Medium gauge) for a better (to me) sound. Each has a nut width of 1+11/16", A good Jumbo doesn't need to be played loud because tonally it's a nice well-balanced instrument.

Imply 2 to 3 gigs a week and my Epi works perfectly but now need a 12 string to round out my playlists properly. I'm thinking of an Epi, Sigma or Takamine which suits my budget. I'm a huge Epi fan with a Masterbilt d50MC and an Epi Swingster. I also love my Seagull S6 but the neck is a lite wide for my chord hand which is missing the middle finger from a maritime accident. I’ll tell you this.. there was 2 of these j200’s at a local shop.. they both sounded nothing alike! Now the $5 thousand plus Gibson humming bird sounded better than only 1 of the 2 j200’s with the j200 epiphone sounding much better in the all around sound spectrum and projecting much much more volume than the actual Gibson! Ya., I myself was stunned and was even considering buying the j200 just bc it sounded and played beyond amazing not to mention the action was spot on n soooo easy to play as well. So.., did I buy it? No! Why? Well I had not long ago dropped almost 5 grand in total, just a little under on a Taylor 814 builders edition, a dream purchase! N I’m so in love with it n will never part with it, for no amount of money! I’ll also add for sound, volume and playability the j200 in all honesty could give my Taylor 814ec a run for its money n that’s no lie. I’ve been playing for over 35 years of my now 54 n I’m telling you when looking for your guitar.. play many of them that the stores have.. look over it good.. if it feels great in yr hands, sounds like no other to yr ears and if its in yr price range then buy it. Don’t get hung up on the name.. yes I love the USA made etc etc but shit man are they really worth what they are charging us? Taylor USA, Martin USA.. Gibson & Fender, PRS.., you guys really take it out of our asses n half the time yr q.c. Is for sSSS hit! WTF man? N now you’ve got the balls to start making these models that lead up your yr actual standard normally.., originally produced guitars and now changing INSANELY crazy prices! You’re gonna shoot yourselves in the foot by designing these multi level scam tricks and PRS is a prime example of what I’m talking about. Now a PRS custom 22 with the original violin carve.. not a semi carve b.s. will cost you thousands of dollars compared to what they used to cost. Now everyone is copying the PRS b.s. marketing scam of this multiple models before you even get to their normal regular standard model.., and they upped the prices big time n it’s a scam! That’s how they thank their customers.., gee.. thanks a lot. Well I’m not falling for it nor will I buy them new.. I’ll buy a great used PRS custom 22 or 24!

They both sound pretty good. The Epi is much brighter and has really nice articulation while the Gibson has a really woody sound. The way I hear things, if you’re looking for something that sits in with the band, the Epi works well, while Gibson wins as a leading instrument in a quieter or finger picked song.

Hopefully Epiphone does a better job installing pickguards. Every Gibson acoustic I’ve owned, the pickguard lifts off the guitar.

I price is relative in this comparison, but $2,000 for the G-200 that's this stripped back is absolutely insane. It looks like a Martin X series. It sounds fine but I would not buy it in a million years over the Epiphone

if i was buying for looks the Epiphone wins , for sound it would be the Gibson . but really they both sound damn good , i think the Gibson has more bass . not that the Epi is lacking . i think it comes down to playability for the individual , and simply if you can afford the Gibson .

I had Gibson G45 studio which sounded ok, but it was awful guitar, felt like squier acoustic when touched and played. I returned it and bought IbG Hummingbird, it feels, looks lovely but it took it few months to dry a bit and to sound like Gibson.

I'm not sure which I prefer but as I was reading through the comments and listening to the playing, I kept scrolling back up while playing the Epiphone to make sure it was still the Epi.
Both sound great and the Epi is fighting way outside its weight class. Impressive.
Edit: the Gibson has a bit more dynamics to it. But honestly that could be the difference between being made on a Monday or a Friday.

I own 2 of the "Inspire by..." sj200's. Proper strings will change the sound, I like Medium-poly-56/12 which gives a very different tone then any other string I've tried. 2nd, you still need to check the truss-rod, level the frets (a lot) and very likely you'll need to sand a bone saddle to get good action (for strumming, I don't pick.) The pins suck, get better ones as these are very cheap plastic. At this point, you'll have something that when it's plugged in, can and will rival anything that costs double, maybe triple. But, this guitar needs work for that to happen. I've played a dozen of these, and I own an "Inspired by..." Hummingbird, and that also needed a proper setup, as quite a few of the frets weren't even close to level. Typical. I've never played a new Gibson with unlevel frets, just say'n......I will never spend that kind of money. Go with an "Inspired by..." but only with the intention that you have to finish it before you get something special out of it.

I think guitar makers that have both USA made guitars as well as an import line of guitars can and do "dumb down" the import lines.
As an example, Gibson has been making guitars long enough that it knows all the nuances of guitar building and decides what to leave in and what to leave out. Discounting wood quality, which is a whole topic by itself, things like top thickness, bracing woods used, how many or how few braces, how heavy the bracing, fret wire choice, can make differences, so many variables. These variables are not necessarily based on cost. Does it cost more to have a brace 1/4" more or less forward on the top?
A guitar built in Asia can be assigned a good or great build design, labor likely being the greatest variable. The USA made guitar has to be perceived as being better in order to get the $500, $1000, or $2000 more. USA made guitars have to sound better, have better materials, better finishes or the perception of such. A possible reality is that an Epiphone may be as good as the equivalent Gibson.
I am not saying the Epiphone is. That's the buyers call. But if the Gibson is thought to be better that might be because Gibson doesn't want the EPI to approach being as good as the Gibson.

I don't consider this range of guitar to be investment grade so my advise is by the one that plays and sounds the best to you. Presumably both are right out of the box so consider that the Epi sounds the worst either will ever sound. My guess is that 20 years down the road the Epi will sound the best.

My neighbor has that epi j200. It’s bittersweet because it looks nice and even plays well. But it sounds like a cardboard box. It doesn’t have that tonal cut through. Like being able to play bass tones and still have the thin strings cut into the bass and compliment each other. If you’re strumming and then add a higher tone lick. It doesn’t come through clear. At the price point of the epi. It’s a good guitar and compared to the budget Gibson. Probably equal sound quality. But don’t buy an epiphone j200 and think that you’re getting just a less expensive Gibson J-200. Radically different guitar. It’s an ok backyard strummer for the money.

Were the strings on the Epiphone changed from the factory ones (I doubt it)? The reason I asked is that I recently bought an Epiphone IBG Hummingbird. The factory strings were GARBAGE! When I changed them to D'Addario Guitar Strings - XT Phosphor Bronze Coated Acoustic Guitar Strings - XTAPB1253 - Extended String Life with Natural Tone & Feel - For 6 String Guitars - 12-53 Light, it was like night and day! Do it you will not be disappointed!!!

I think if you're going to step up to buy a Gibson, I think there are better options in the $2,000 - $3,000 range. the G note on the E string has so much Umff on the Epi J200, whilst maintaining clarity when fingerpicked. The Gibson has a well defined bass, crisp and complex. But that is expected from a smalller body guitar with and extra soundhole. It will make it sound more airy. The J200 has a great snap to it, and great sustain, but I do think the sustain on the gibson is crispier more in the high end of the spectrum while the J200 is warmer but it does sound a bit muddier for some reason, I think this has to do with the thickness of the materials used, or too much pickguard material for a cheper type of spruce, and of course the finish adds up to what could've been a true gibson for less than 1000 bucks
