  • Welcome back folks for Part 2 of my collab with the wonderful ‪@SewnontheTyne‬ and the ‪@chalkandnotchpatterns2951‬ Shay Dress! I absolutely adore this dress and wore it to two international conferences in the last three weeks so it is a certified wardrobe staple.

Hi Jess, lovely to see you back.
I made my wedding dress, vail, headdress, two adult bridesmaids dresses and a winter dressing gown. This was all 40 years ago now with no central heating in an old house, hence the dressing gown. I wasn’t working at that time so had plenty of time for sewing. I still had nightmares of walking up the aisle with bridesmaids dresses sleeves missing pins everywhere. It did all go to plan for the big day in the end.
Try not to over do things while your making all the things and studying. You don’t want to burn out. Wedding dress and study first and if TH-cam is to much, come back to it when you can.
I can’t wait to see your finished wedding dress. Such an exciting and terrifying thing to do all at once. I remember it well lol.
Wish there was a way to send you photos of my wedding. Very 80s off the shoulder number with lace overlay. I had my hair permed not long before the wedding, such a stupid thing to do. That’s why I had to make a last minute flower headband 🙄
Good luck with your dress and enjoy your wedding day ❤

Think its really good that you only post when you want to. You tube etc puts a lot of pressure on people to produce content and although I love watching you, I think ordinary life should be a priority!

God bless you, I have my doctorate in nursing and completely understand ❤ you can do it. I have been sewing up a storm with my increased free time. I can’t sew when I am tired. Take car3 of you! I want to make my daughter’s wedding dress one day! She is not engaged so I sew her dresses often.

It’s a long time since I finished my PhD but its still one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It’s also a pretty solitary activity and you have to put a lot of your own drive and energy into it even when things aren’t going as you hoped. So don’t be apologetic on here, you have loads to focus on, and good luck with it all 😊

Beautiful Shay dress, you got such a great fit on it. Could you possibly put a little piece of elastic in the sleeve head to help it stay in place on this version? 😊

Ethics applications are a huge deal - well done 💪 Conferences and empirical work are both so much work, so glad you're being reflective and taking care of yourself. PhD is the single hardest thing I have done, and I have given birth twice 😅 xx

Thank you so much for saying this ❤ it feels like such a massive deal but also so hard to explain why its so hard 😅

@@SoWhatIfISewYou're doing really well creating balance in your life and finding time for things other than academic work. It's a marathon. It might be interesting that, I once went to a great talk once by Jorge Cham the author behind PhD Comics who was discussing the landscape of Doctoral candidates' mental health, and why there's such a high incidence of crisis. Some thoughts I came away with, and from my experience - you get a whole group of people who have generally started on this path by being good at academic work, and task them with a long-running project which requires huge effort and a lot of inevitable uncertainty, and often failure, before anybsuccess; and the successes can be quite a wait to get to. There's a lot of criticism along the way, constructive and not, too. By the end of my PhD I came away thinking that simply 'ability to keep going' was the single biggest contributor to getting to the finish line. You got this 💪
