Gracias maestro.
+Dance Papi Also!! My partner and I have just started to watch the Dance videos.....we're beginners and will start classes in 3 weeks but your excellent introductory lessons are giving us some much needed confidence! THANKS!
Thank you sir! I was just thinking about starting to play the guiro but didnt like how most players only knew the cha cha rhythm. This is a great lesson.
I Thank you for you using the word Gourd. You 'r right. Because Calebases are totaly different, they grows in a tree and gourds grows on the ground. kiss from Musicolo gourds producer, musician and guiro maker in france
Thank you very much for this wonder full video. The best instruction ever of playing Guiro . Love it. Very clear and easy to understand. Thank you again and again.
Edguardo, thank you for the lesson. Just got a Puerto 🇵🇷 Rican guiro and writing music for my next album and just needed basic guiro techniques just to get an idea. Actually, I need jibaro patterns. Do you have a video for that? Great lesson 👍
Mr. Edgardo Cambon, you did a great job.. I finally got it!@ lol.. Gracias por la explicacion estuvo excelente..I need a Timbales/Bongo Workshop I will coordinate in advance whenever I visit Cali
Don’t underestimate the difficulty of play the guiro. I’ve been trying to get up to some of the speed he shows here and I can’t do it after a couple of weeks of really practicing. I can play cleanly to slower salsa but on songs that are much faster I fall apart.
Hi good afternoon I'm very fairly new playing the guiro which I love love love thank you so mu h for posting your videos..... I had a question please I admire the shirt your wearing, where would I be able to purchase that shirt from please? Thank you
Hi, The only difference is the speed, as the Guaracha can be much faster, but bear in mind that in the Guaracha (because the Guaracha is more related to Son music than Cha-Cha,) the Maracas may be a more appropriate accompanying instrument. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
There are many different guiros, and they all sound different, (specially if they are made with a natural gourd) but if you buy a plastic guiro from some re-known company (and they are many to chose) the sound will get closer to the one in the video. Also you may have a natural Guiro from the Plena tradition (Puerto Rico) called the Guicharo, and that one has very thin threads and its played with a metal brush type of "stick"... That one for sure will sound very different. I hope this helps you to understand whats going on with yours. Thanks for watching my videos. Edgardo.
Fantastic lesson very thorough. I was wondering if sometime in the future you could demonstrate Bembe, Rumba and the Cascara pattern on Guiro? I've heard this on old Cuban recordings probably played by Gustavo Tamayo and would like to see this actually played on a video tutorial. As always thank you!
+David Easter , yes indeed, the "Cáscara" pattern (derived from the Timbales, but also from similar patterns played accompanying Rumba,) is occasionally heard and played, specially in older recordings like albums of Johnny Pacheco (Dominican Flutist). It is used in "Conjunto" ensembles, using Conga and Bongó (without Timbales) and thus the Guiro covers a little bit of that roll. I didn't think of it, or I would have included that on the existing Guiro video. Thanks for checking in!
So what's interesting is that they had a version of this instrument before the introduction of the Calabash Gourd (African Origin), one of humanities longest domesticated vegetable.
Edgardo, nice answer, but with all due respect, the French and Chinese aren't going to be nearly as interested in the guiro as those who consider it to be a symbol of cultural pride...and someone with cultural pride is, to put it bluntly, not likely to want to hear another language describing "his" music. It's nice that you still have an accent, even after 30 years in an English-speaking country: That gives your voice some rhythm. :) That said, I can READ Spanish, but my hearing--and training--is not good enough to follow spoken Spanish at normal speeds, so I am personally grateful that you have done this in English. I would have liked to hear you play to a soundtrack, but I'm sure I can find some examples of the guiro in music, now that I know what to listen for. Thank you very much for this work!
Dance Papi you are confusing me when you said that the Guiro is a Latin instrument. Then you also said that the Taino native people of Kuba had this instrument before the arrival of the europeans. The Latin people are they not Italians? Please educate me. Nonetheless your presentation is flawless you are a versatile percussionist. Where can i get a Tee-shirt like the one you have on, I love that tee shirt, Adios mi hermano, estoy Lumumba en las islas de las Virgeness.
Gracias maestro.
Gracias Agustin, un abrazo musical lejano. Sigue practicando!

Can anyone tell me what's the difference between salsa guiro and chacha guiro? If there is a difference.

I love your videos! Thank you so much.
thank you just received as gift and happy to learn
Fantastic lesson very thorough. I was wondering if sometime in the future you could demonstrate Bembe, Rumba and the Cascara pattern on Guiro? I've heard this on old Cuban recordings probably played by Gustavo Tamayo and would like to see this actually played on a video tutorial. As always thank you!
+David Easter Wonderful suggestions David! I'll approach Edgardo with these ideas to see if we can film these patterns. Please stay tuned!
+David Easter , yes indeed, the "Cáscara" pattern (derived from the Timbales, but also from similar patterns played accompanying Rumba,) is occasionally heard and played, specially in older recordings like albums of Johnny Pacheco (Dominican Flutist). how do you play a puerto rican güiro?
¿cómo se toca un güiro puertorriqueño?
I like this video. I think the gourd is warmer than the plastic, or is that just me?
Muchas gracias.
This is a brilliant lesson, thank you :-)
