There a lot of people teaching on TH-cam how to play the conga’s. I found you and I’m so happy I did. I m retired and I want to learn how to play to keep me busy and entertain. I’m from New York and I’m Puerto Rican. 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷 thank you God bless you 🙏🏻
My son had his first lessons in church yesterday to be in the church band to play the conga. I wanted to show him a good teacher. When you say God willing about future aspirations, it was a sign from God that you are the right mentor for my son when it comes to the Congo.
I've been a kit drummer for 50+ years, just getting into congas now. This is one of the best tutorials on any topic I've seen. Really clear and well done, perfect for folks starting out. Thank you so much!
I am also 77 years young! I have been toying with the idea of playing with Latin music recordings. Just surfing the web and came across this site. Very interesting. Just about sold on purchasing a conga or 2 or 3 and have mucho fun playing my drums. Seniors jam!!!
Two or more is better my friend I'm also learning it's hard to learn just playing to music it's better to learn the basics with papi keeping time comes with practice🤔😉
Groovy, I'm a Salsa instructor , & I wanted 2 add live percussion 2 my dance class..I'm learning the basic rhythm 4 Salsa....It's exciting, your instruction is helping... Thanks 4 posting
Thank you so much. You are an incredible teacher. I am a real rookie and this was so instructive. I haven't even got my conga yet. They will be delivered on the 10th of 12th of June. But I was practicing by hitting on a table. You might be interested to know that I am 77 years old. I have always loved latin music and especially the wonderful sounds and beat of the congas. I probably won't ever to be great, but I will sure have fun trying. Thank you again.
Robert Armstrong I practice on wood, and took lessons with some great masters at hotel room tables when in lack of drums...I hope your drums have arrived well and that you get started soon with the "the real thing": a Conga! Congrats on starting something new at a later age, it is never late to have fun learning something new. Take care. Edgardo.
japp rivera: Hey Japp, I am 79 years old now and playing all the time. I just love it. I have developed some pretty good techniques. Wish I knew how to put videos on TH-cam, I would post a video of my playing the drums. Of course I am nothing close to a professional, but I really love playing them. I purchased about1 5 different latin albums and play the heck out of the drums. Please do get your drums. You will love them and the emotion you can express with them is wonderful. Thank you for your well wishes and I wish the same for you.
Hi Doug: Thank you so much for your post. I am doing great. I have learned to use my weak hand (left) much, much better. I have bought a lot of latin CDs and play with them all the time. Of course I will never be a great conga player, but I do very well and have had lots of comments about my playing. I just love it. I would hope that any seniors reading this will come to know that you are never too old to learn new things and to try things you think you might enjoy, but feel you may not be good enough. It is all about you doing something you love--not how great you might be. Thanks again, Doug. I am on the downhill slide to 80 now (July 4th) but I am still singing with my quartet and playing clubs and private parties and playing the congas. Occasionally, I pick up my trumpet, which I used to play and give it a blow. I manage to get through about 2-3 songs and my lip gives out. Oh well, my own fault--I didn't stay with it as I should have. But I won't quit playing the congas!! I can sit and play them for hours! Got a couple of ganglia in my hands but they do not interfere at all with my playing. My best wishes to you. Ar you a conga player?
Palm/finger is the proper anatomical words to use. Heel/toe if we play with our feet. You are the first teacher to even mention that you don’t like the Heel /toe instruction because it can confuse the student. Thank you so much for posting these fine instructional videos.
Excellent brother! Jesus, you actually taught me something. Man brother, it feels really great, like I'm connecting to my people man. You see i was born here, and playing Conga makes me feel close! Thank you bro, and I will watch or go see you really soon. God Bless you and yours !
Thank you so much! You are so very kind and generous to share your knowledge with us. I'm 64 and will will never have a real conga drum. I'm using a plastic bucket held between my knees, but still learning from you. It's all so enjoyable.
Edgardo Cambon: It is two years since I posted on your site. I got my congas and love them. I play them very often and have played them with a group I am in for public appearances. I absolutely love the drums. I am nothing close to a professional as I started playing without lessons except for some that I saw here on TH-cam. Your video was especially helpful. I wish I knew how to post videos on TH-cam, I would download a video of my playing so you could see what your teaching did for me. At 79 years of age, I am still playing the drums regularly and loving them. Thank you Edgardo!!
So delighted to have found a brilliant teacher. I have played Bongo's for years relying on my sense of rhythm alone. Both my dad and my brother were professional drummers. I just seemed to inherit to sound. I could never afford a tumbadora but out of the blue yesterday on our local flea market I saw a pair along with chrome stand for £60 GPD. and it's not even Christmas! I am now hooked on learning to play them correctly, but I do tend to improvise a lot which I need to get out of. My hands can move very fast. Thank you once again for passing on your skill. I have subscribed to the channel and look forward to more lessons.
🥀 Thank you for your videos. I'm not sure how thorough I'm thinking I want to be with this, if I decide to purchase congas. But I really like the sounds you're creating here. -- I guess I'm a little different from most other commenters, being that I'm a woman, and have been beating on walls, hollow couch arms, etc., most of my life. But I'm in the same age range. Ha My "Latin" blood happens to be Sicilian. lol . It's funny how many of us in our 50's and up are beginning to explore an old passion for creating these drum sounds !! Peace & love !! 🌹🙋🏻♀️
As a music lover of India I used to play with the triple congo (maybe an indian derivative), not professionally, to our hindi songs of the 70"s and 80's composed by our great composer RAHUL DEV BURMAN in our school days, which I think every percussionist of Indian film songs do. This man, Rahul dev barman introduced ourselves to the international music, I would rather say opened a new avenue of modern music to India and every one became his fan at once. So this is the brief background of now so called modern indian music and also my interest of learning the actual conga. Now I am 42 yrs. and again wanted to learn the actual lessons. I searched over the internet and also seen lots of videos of conga lessons, but to my opinion you are the best teacher to learn from and you make it very easy for me because our habits were to play with the fingers of the right hand (middle and right part of the three) and the base (left part of the three)with the left hand (something like the open tone ). So Sir carry on with your teachings and upload them, so beginners like us will be able to know at least something of Latin music. Thank you so much. God bless you.
+DEBASHISH SEN Thank you for the kind comments! We're happy you find our videos helpful and encourage you to pursue music as an important part of your life!
Excellent lesson ! Clear and easy to understand and follow. Really for beginners (I didn't feel like I was stuck just in the middle of lesson as with some others videos). You're a great teacher ! Thank you very much.
Thank you so much. I had a set of conga drums just because I love them and always wanted some. They sat here in my house for a few years and then I found your site and I am playing my congas and loving it. Thank you. I love drums!!!
Mille mercis, monsieur professeur, j'ai abandonné avec un professeur en école de musique et vous m'avez donné envie de m'y remettre ! Je reprends ce week-end ! Super prof !
Excellent lesson for 1st timers. I got so much out of this lesson. Very clear, smooth precise instructions. I have purchased a complete set of Congas including the bongos. I can't wait for your next instructional video lesson. I'm gonna fine you on Facebook and I will be in touch. I THANK YOU for taking out the time to show us beginners the basics of playing the Congas...
You are a fantastic and thorough teacher. I went from zero to making a fun beat in 30 minutes! A very sincere thank you for your time and efforts. I will be working through more of these.
Excellent introduction to the instrument! Calm, intelligent, comprehensive but not overwhelming. He conveys a sincere joy about sharing his knowledge/experience (especially of what beginners should avoid doing). Will be recommending to many.
This is the best beginning conga video on TH-cam, hands down (pun intended)! Thank you for making and posting this Edgardo - you have a great talent for teaching as well as playing. As a beginner living in a remote area, I don't have access to a teacher in person but this is the next best thing. I played drum set professionally when I was younger but never learned the correct way to play conga. I'm 60 now, and it's time! :) Gracias!
Thank bro ,my family ,(parents, siblings, cousins are very musical with various instr.as well as singing. & percussion intrs. Or toys as we call them.) But for the congas which we always had around ,no formal teaching. Kinda just went by feel. & I prob think I'm 1 of the better (players ,only because I feel I'm playing the "proper or more fitting rhythm that works or compliments the song) but after your awesome getting back to basic fundamental tutorial , I'm going to be On It! With the correct positioning ,and "attack" as well as all instruction you shared , my advice to All is Take this teaching & apply & have fun but practice consistently , im just bummed i wasn't doing it correctly for the past 25yrs but doesn't matter its still a very good feeling when it works , Thank for Sharing your Manao (Hawaii word hard to describe but would be like your " deep, inner, spiritual ,thoughts or wisdom, teachings that you share for good...) yeah so much Mahalo & Aloha✌🤙
You are the best Utube online teacher I have found. The best is my Conga tutor in person, you are the best online. Keep it up, you are an excellent tutor
Got an early Christmas gift of 2 congas and a set of bongos. This will be a first for me that I wanted to learn for years and years. Thank you for this!!
thanks edgardo, you are a most amazing teacher, musician and human being. thanks for sharing your doggie in the video too. i am a musician and a dog lover, in fact i love all animals and those people who love animals. thanks again brother.
Excellent information, thank you for demonstrating correct technique, their different sounds, and comparing the sound difference when using incorrect technique. I have been playing drum kit for 40 years and have just bought myself a pair of congas. Your information is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for your tutorial 😎👍🙌😜
I just started as the vocalist for a contemporary jazz band that also plays in a Latin style. I have the sense of rhythm for drumming - but needed to start a true foundation for our instrumental songs. Esto es perfecto! Muchas gracias. Subscribed! 😎
+Axel Presas , muchas gracias. Definitivamente, Obatalá ha estado siempre conmigo desde el 92, y bueno, en realidad desde que nací. Bendiciones a ti y que los tambores te den alegría y fuerza para vivir y seguir adelante. Saludos musicales desde Oakland.
Fantastic! I’ve decided your videos will be my conga lessons! As a drummer on the kit for many years, I’ve recently bought my first conga drums. I’ve been trying to get the sounds and it hasn’t taken me long to realise that conga playing is an amazing art and no way as easy as it looks! This is going to take patience and consistent practice, but I’m determined to learn! Thanks for this video, great demonstrations and teaching style. Thanks 😀
Thanks for the video! I’ve been on percussion in funk band at my school and have decided I’m gonna properly learn the congas so I can be even better next year and this really helped so thanks!
Not sure exactly which one you mean, but I played a "harmonic sound" (and I don't mean harmonica) with my finger in the center of the drum while hitting it with the other hand, then by using my nail I increased the sound of the back-front motion. Those are many other sounds are categorized as "inventions" not necessarily a "must have" in your Conga vocabulary, but very fun. Thanks!
This is awesome! Thank you so much for posting this. Can't wait to get my own Congas and start practicing. I always wanted to learn and never got around to it.
Ugh I wish there was more talent in my small community on the east coast to help teach me more techniques on my congas and tumbadora. Till then I'll continue to enjoy videos like these. Gracias!
Thank you for these tutorials can’t wait to start practicing I’ve always wanted congas and now I own one I didn’t know where to begin so I ended up with the Conga drum I’ll get the other two but for now I’m excited to have the foundation to practice the rudiments to play thank you. 🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Beautiful video! For the tone and slap, I tell my students to "show me your palm". This gets their hand in the correct position and keeps their wrist close to the drum so they are accurate with the strike. Thanks for the awesome instructional videos. Cheers!
+Randall Dick Very cool! We're thrilled to play a small role in inspiring people to learn how to play the tumbadoras. Please stay tuned for more videos!
Hello I have played the conga as a hobby watching your lessons are very encouraging to get serious would love to stay connect with your teaching, would like to buy a new middle drum should i wood or fiberglass
Thank you. Africa where the FIRST to have this instrument. It's amazing how other cultures adapted. Especially Spanish cultures. It's amazing but I love them ALL from every cultures

Same here!!
Likely the best conga video on the internet.
Master player; master teacher. Beautiful and informative. Much appreciated.
This is the best and most thorough conga tutorial on the internet. EXCELLENT. Thank you. It even tells you what angle to hold your hands.
Gracias!
Вчера Купил - Purchased for Myself LP GONGO SET 12´´ and 12,5’´

Absolutely. He is so sympathic and competent!Like this guy and his class!

If you're buying new, I suggest the Matador line. They're a little cheaper than LP top-line drums, but they're still excellent quality and tone!
I just bought Matadors from Reverb. Craigslist always has great deals too.
Two or more is better my friend I'm also learning it's hard to learn just playing to music it's better to learn the basics with papi keeping time comes with practice🤔😉

Fantastic! I’ve decided your videos will be my conga lessons! As a drummer on the kit for many years, I’ve recently bought my first conga drums. This was great!!! What a great teacher!!! Bravo amici!!
Thanks for the explanation, I'd like to know the name of the golpe you made in min 31:14?
Not sure exactly which one you mean, but I played a "harmonic sound" (and I don't mean harmonica) with my finger in the center of the drum while hitting it with the other hand, then by using my nail I increased the sound of the back-front motion. Those are many other sounds are categorized as "inventions" not necessarily a "must have" in your Conga vocabulary, but very fun. Thanks!
Gracias Ricardo desde Barcelona

Ugh I wish there was more talent in my small community on the east coast to help teach me more techniques on my congas and tumbadora. Till then I'll continue to enjoy videos like these. Gracias!

Glad it was helpful!
So happy to hear!
"Kill that mosquito." - I love it! What a great teacher you are. Thank you. 🦋
Beautiful video! For the tone and slap, I tell my students to "show me your palm". This gets their hand in the correct position and keeps their wrist close to the drum so they are accurate with the strike. Thanks for the awesome instructional videos. Cheers!
Happy to lend a helping hand! :-) Thanks for watching our videos!
