Daredevil has legit the best runs. Every writer you ask what's their dream character to work on they always say Daredevil. The religious tones, the psychology of a vigilante bonded to his faith and driven by his depression is such a great setting to create the dark and impactful storylines. #savedaredevil
I love the contradictions of the character. By day he argues on behalf of the law, than goes out and breaks it every night. He wrestles with religion, as you mentioned. He makes love with beautiful people, but can't see them. Beautiful character.
@@JusRed48 I was going to say something similar. This Daredevil run and Alan Moore's Swamp Thing are both still completely entertaining books to read. They've aged like wine.
I think Miller's best work is with Daredevil. This run showed he understood the potential of the comics medium like no one else. His page layouts are genius.
I never realized how much material the Daredevil show adapted from this specific run until I saw this video. A great start to Darecember, I can’t wait to see what else is on the horizon!
I loved all the Daredevil sagas, including Brian Michael Bendis'. Frank Miller's run elevated comics into something new and adult oriented. The illustration and inking were perfect complements to the writing.
When scripting this arc Miller pitched Black Widow in the Elektra role and Marvel informed him he wasn't "going to kill the Black Widow." Even at this early stage Miller had to know creating a bombastic character like Elektra was a gift that would keep on giving. Marvel.
Daredevil and Elektra's relationship has always reminded me of Batman and pre Grant Morrison Talia Al Ghul. The lovers who can't be together because they're on different sides and have different moral codes and methods. I hate how Talia was retconned from a morally ambiguous character torn between her love for Bruce and her loyalty to her dad Ra's to pure evil. I also hate how Bruce and Talia's consensual sex that conceived Damian was retconned into her drugging and raping him.
In my opinion, Daredevil #191 is one of the best single-issue stories ever told in comics. Before reading it I had never been so immersed and so captivated by a comic, I was virtually on the edge of my seat, and that's not hyperbole. Miller at his peak could do no wrong and he earned the right to make as many "All Star Batman and Robins" and "Holy Terrors" as he wants with stories like "Roulette". The guy is beyond good and evil.
I was gonna save this video til I read all of Miller’s Daredevil run (just recently picked up all the trades) but I couldn’t resist. I’m thinking it’ll just make me appreciate the run even more when I finish it all
I would like to have a daredevil story where Matt Murdock gets a happy ending. Where he falls in love gets married and doesn't have his wife die or go insane and he and his wife have a happy life.
This is as good a summing up as we're likely to see. 10:47 Elektra Lives Again is very good despite the somewhat messy art. Elektra Assasin is off the scale brilliant.
That Frank Miller opposed calls for Elektra to be resurrected for years when comic book character deaths are almost taken for granted as a minor setback in-universe speaks to how personal this arc was for him, to the point that he tears up in interviews talking about it. I was way too young to be reading that comic book arc, but I did anyway - and it along with Killing Joke had this profound traumatic effect on me - it was just this gripping tearjerker to have Elektra see her moment of redemption by letting Foggy go, left alone to contemplate what she'll do next knowing that so defying the Kingpin is in itself basically a death sentence, only to be brutally and sadistically killed by a violent psychopath for extremely petty reasons (she had the gall to take Bullseye's job while he was IN JAIL). This was also the first time as a kid I had seen violence against women so graphically depicted. Like you knew when Wonder Woman or She Hulk or Rogue took a hit from a supervillain that while it wasn't a great experience they were basically okay. But the only way that Bullseye is able to one-up Elektra and kill her is by fighting dirty and punching her in the face full-force breaking her jaw. And the fact that she's not immediately fine afterward but is dazed and weak from the impact spoke to me that a man hitting a woman like that is wrong and F**d up (which I knew already but this drove it home and made it infinitely more clear). All this followed by her stumbling half-dead towards Matt's apartment to die in his arms which is both graphic and almost a humiliation ritual for her character in her final moments. So many layers
@Sean O’ Deli I trust the info I get from the fan movement #SaveDaredevil that they know their information and have done their research, but please continue to be an asshole.
@Sean O’ Deli That would be so much better than bringing in Maguire and Garfield for a Spiderverse, and Strange being MCU Peter's third unnecesary mentor.
DARECEMBER IS BACK BABYYYYYYYYYY THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR seriously, thank you for this. DD has always been my fave comic character so these are a massive treat
This is fantastic - great observations - but the only problem is you’re using artwork from one of he newer reprints, for which they’ve added all kinds of shading that isn’t in the originals (as Marvel and DC both do). I’ve got the original issues, which have the plain, flat coloring that was standard for the time, which is How Miller and Janson intended it to be seen.

Maybe the show and the movie have turned me off a bit, but I’m optimistic going into this because, after all, it’s Frank fucking Miller.
I'd say the 2 heroes who've gone through the most tragedy are Daredevil and Wolverine. Matt was blinded as a kid, his dad was killed by gangsters for not throwing a boxing match, Elektra and Karen were murdered by Bullseye, his life was utterly ruined by Kingpin in Born Again and so on. And Wolverine was born from an affair his mother Elizabeth Howlett had with Thomas Logan, John Howlett the man he thought was his dad was killed by Thomas after firing him and sending him and his son Dog away from the Howlett house after Dog tried to rape James/Wolverine's tutor Rose, he accidentally killed Rose while they were living at a mining colony while fighting with Dog, he was kidnapped, experimented on and tortured by the Weapon X scientists who bonded adamantium to his bones to turn him into a super soldier and they also put fake memories in his head so he couldn't remember his past, the mother of his son Daken was killed and Daken was cut out of her womb and raised as an assassin,he got the adamantium ripped from his bones by Magneto at one point and he was also tricked into killing his own children by the son of an evil man he'd killed.

This channel is highly underrated!
Looking at these pages’ drawings, and wow... Elodie Yung was well-cast. She captured Elektra’s insanity and vulnerability. Plus, they look the same!
If only they went by her comic story...
Daredevil would have disappeared from the comic book scene if Frank Miller hadn't come around.

11:41 DAMN you did not have to go that hard on Frank and his hookers
I feel like every Frank Miller female character that isn't Elektra or Martha Washington is a prostitute...
The man loves noir and the tropes therein
The funny thing is even in Miller's Man Without Fear, his version of Elektra there kind of goes into hyper-Miller prostitute-ish territory.
It's like Peter and Gwen, If Gwen turned into a mercnary after Captain Stacy died
