How To Make Your PHOTOS Look Cinematic [Photography & Lightroom Tutorial]

  • Learn how to make your photos look more cinematic.
    My presets: www.nightshotacademy.com/shop...
In this video I will share my workflow for shooting and editing cinematic photography - not just by adding a LUT or a preset, but how to create photos with cinematic elements from start to finish.
Personally, cinematic street photography is my favorite style of photography, but these tips would apply if you wish to take more cinematic portraits or any other type of cinematic photography as well.
You can see some of my work on instagram at / teemu.jpeg
Example of a good pro mist filter:

Remember to check the right size for your lens!
And yes it's an affiliate link meaning I make a commission if you use this.

    0:00 Intro
0:42 Part 1: How to TAKE more cinematic photos
6:40 Part 2: How to EDIT cinematic photos on Adobe Lightroom
    11:18 Outro
Last, I want to elaborate a bit on the storytelling section - I'm not saying the story has to be some sort of a grand novel or any photo that doesn't have a story cannot be cinematic. In fact, most of my photos do not have stories - because adding one is hard. But if there was a challenge to create the most cinematic photograph ever of all time, it would probably be one with a story. One additional way to add a story - simply type one out in the caption!

You're making some good points about some of the shortcomings that I've been seeing with everybody's obsession over labeling themselves or photos as cinematic.
The over emphasis on the editing and the lack of things in the photo relating to each other. Making photos look old or like out dated film was used is to instagram what increasing color saturation is to flickr.
Just apply it to anything and call it cinematic.

As an utter and complete novice with the barest minimum equipment and editing resources I happen to have learned a great deal, so thank you. Lucky for me each of my slide shows will have a definite story to tell, and will be shot in a controlled location. The problem is due to the subject mater (plants) and the color plate of the room (breakfast nook turned plant room) I basically have too much brightness. I tried some shots later in the day and at night and then have far too much contrast and shadow. I do plan on painting the room, and changing up the inherent lighting, but that wont always be an option as I expand to taking shots outside this summer. Better bet I'll be watching this video again as I grow along with your other content.
Hopefully as my project grows Ill be able to reinvest into better equipment and maybe even a better location(s) only time will tell.

Haha the way I found out about them is kinda funny, it was really humid and my lens kept getting misty but just the right amount of mist was actually kinda nice - so then I started googling around for filters to replicate this and turns out they are quite popular among filmmakers!

Great tips. I’m wondering if the term “cinematic” is being blurred/confused with film “noir” recently. The several movie aspect ratios used throughout the various era is another component to pursue. Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel is a great example of all the different ratios used in cinema to tell his story. Kubrick’s use of light and different focal lengths is something to look at too. Cheers!

Nice advice, thanks. Agreed there are few films shot in portrait! This is photography we are talking about however, generally I agree about the landscape thing - but in a still image sometimes portrait works well and if the aim in 'cinematic' photography is story telling, the greatest achievements tend to be in the single frame - we do not need to be constrained by the aspect ratio or orientation of frame in this respect. We do not have the apparatus, time or actors to create a movie. We do not need to - as the poem to the novel, the still image that captures the greatest potential for multivalence in the broadest audience is the most 'cinematic' regardless of aspect and framing and the 'fiction' is created from reality. This is why it is so fascinating. Thanks again.
