Sitting on some old tires, makes you think about where those tires have been driving. who made the roads there they drove, who designed the roads, who agreed on the design. So many folks involved bringing lots of thoughts.

Nice project. A couple things: First, I like how you work without a shop full of the perfect tools. The fact you had to borrow tools is a good thing. Second, I watch these projects with the girls and young women in my life. It's important for them to see women doing this work. Third, you mentioned linseed oil ... PLEASE, if you don't know about safe storage of this oil, research it. Spontaneous combustion is a serious risk. Other than that, good luck. Your channel is now in the viewing rotation. p.s. I probably would not have found you without "Laura Kampf" in the title, so good one on that. Reach out to other women to network and organically increase your viewership.

I strongly echo DrTrin's comments. I also found you due to the "Laura" reference, and I think that you are very strongly espousing her ethic and process (I've also been following her since the early days). I volunteer for a tool-lending library, and I am always looking for references to DIY women that I can share with our members - to reinforce that they can do it if they only try! You have a new subscriber.

Same here, I watch Laura's videos with my girls (8 and 13). They loved the bench videos, and they'll be delighted that there's now a third in the series! Thanks, Chloe, and all the best from Finnish Lapland! 👍😎

Important P.S. Don't cook with boiled linseed oil, that was a joke and multiple people have commented on the dangers!

Laura Kampf is truly an inspiration to many. I love her videos. You have done an equally inspiring job with this bench.
To help you in the future should you ever try to use used tires again. Try looking for Bias-ply tires since they do not have metal wires in them like Radial tires do. They are bit more difficult to find because they pretty much stopped putting them on passenger cars after 1974, but they are still being made. The brand Coker Tire make reproduction one for classic car restorations so try asking around at any classic car show in your local area if they have any used ones still laying around. They usually will since typically Bias-plys wear out faster than more modern tires.

I LOVE seeing people make things with minimal tools. Not that I don't appreciate tools and makers of all sorts, but seeing what one can accomplish without fancy tools is very inspiring, especially to those looking to start making things.
One inexpensive tool that would make things like the laps easier would be a chisel. Anne of All Trades has a vid or two about making cheap chisels better.

    • @chloet7385

This is absolutely awesome and I can't believe the final result looked so nice and comfy! I would like to make two suggestions though for improvements if you were to make this again: I'm assuming this bench is gonna sit outside, if that's the case you're better off painting the wood since it's the finish that lasts the longest and also try to minimize or eliminate altogether the wood sections where moisture can sit for prolonged periods of time (for example, wood that touches the ground or in your case, the space between the wood that you sit on and the tire above it). I believe decks are constructed in such a way to make these spots minimal but also they are painted with a special sealant iirc (asphaltic paint I think? )

    • @curtisgoodson4965
      @curtisgoodson4965 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@chloet7385 Probably. My goal would have been to produce a clean flat surface. I would start with a chisel and probably follow-up with a hand plane. This, of course, would not produce the textured result that I found intriguing. When doing quick and dirty work for theater sets I have used screw driver to pry chunks out. My goal is to break the piece close to the plane created by the saw kerfs. My "Cringe" is more about your securing the pieces you are working on (clamping stuff in place and using physics to secure your work).

Guerilla Making FTW :) Like the creative use of materials. I would be a little worried about the screws holding the tire treads, they seem marginal in size, given the size of the average American ;) -also, please tell your neighbor to put the guard back on that angle grinder! Those things take off fingers in half a second!! Keep Making.

Be careful with tires. They may be incredibly carcinogenic.

Good work. The coffee shop owner should give you a free coffee everyday :P. Want to see more of your work, you got a new sub. By the way, will any kind of spray paint stick those tires? if yes, then maybe a touch of paint would have made look even cooler.

Boiled linseed oil contains added chemicals as opposed to raw linseed. There is also a food grade linseed oil for cutting boards etc. I would be hesitant to interchange these products for consumption purposes. There is also a fire risk involved with spontaneous combustion from oil soaked rags. Please be aware of storage and disposal instructions. Cutting up and reusing old tires is a real chore but shows you are committed to a better world. The bench looks like it will now last longer than the original build.

Lol thank you for this reply, to be honest I was totally joking when I said you could cook with it in a pinch soooo hopefully no one goes and tries it!

Don't worry about the bench, the recent floods took it away along with a couple of villages

Also the metal in tires is for lightning strikes so you don't get fried if your car is struck
