Personally, Wedding Peach is a favorite for me, it’s a shame it never got a long lasting reputation as other animes. And yes, I recently bought all the volumes including the bonus discs, and it was expensive yet worth it lol
I remember loving both Sailor Moon and Wedding Peach when I was a kid. I wish Wedding Peach would have a reboot like SM did with Crystal. I’d also like for the franchise to expand
Wedding Peach is definitely a favorite of mine and I also think it deserved a lot better. That said, I just want to add a couple things. It's not just about weddings, it's love in general. Weddings are a big thing of course, but it isn't just on that. Love from family and friends are explored just as much. And even then, it's usually just the romance that is being focused on at times. Also, I like to believe that even the creators had no problem poking fun of the wedding dresses. Episode 2 clearly shows why battling in the wedding gown doesn't work and not just that, even the Mecha anime shows how easily they just get stuck. Still, while I love it, I can easily see why some people wouldn't.
THANK YOU I’m aromantic and honestly I adore this show for many reasons. The main characters felt like actual characters and the romance never compromised on it. Honestly I feel like for a romance anime, it’s far better than a lot of modern ones… Momoko and her two friends had great friend chemistry, the scene of them sharing crepes in episode one is honestly one of my favorite moments. Momoko and her father also made me happy as someone who wants a good relationship with my own really busy father. And unironically I think Momoko and Yosuke’s relationship shaped my taste in fictional romances As an aro person, I find romance interesting in the same way humans find space exploration interesting if that makes any sense… And this show just holds a special place in my heart for being my (I guess second considering I grew up on Winx) magical girl show. I need to rewatch it… again
Actual unpopular opinion: I preferred the manga. Anime made Yosuke look like some random background character, he was cute af in the manga. And the art was just better in general to me.
@@Allenluvable the art style really is the only thing going for the manga. I kind of like how the outfits leveled up with the characters in the manga, too. I just wasn’t a fan of the storyline past Yosuke’s reveal of being half devil.
@@Allenluvable I went back to read just the ending after I made this comment, and I do have to take back most of what I said. I just hate the “I only did the horrible thing to protect you” trope, and in the manga, Yosuke did that and it pissed me off. Killing off the dad because he redeemed himself in the anime was better imo. I used to hate that Potamus was treated like she was in the manga, but now I’m more in the middle where she should not have died, and maybe given a chance to reincarnate like Daisy and Lily.
Wedding Peach was the first manga I ever read. (I was able to check it out at my junior high library. Not the first anime I ever watched though) I loved it so dearly, and checked it out nonstop for my three years of junior high. When I graduated, I legit thought about stealing them. Yosuke was also my first manga crush. (My opinion: The anime did him kind of dirty. He's much cuter in the manga) Anyway, it's obviously not the greatest thing ever, but I still have a special place for it my heart, and have finally managed to collect all the manga volumes after years of searching. The anime is much harder to find, as mentioned in the video.
I love this anime, Wedding Peach is the Anime that helped me return to the Magical Girl genre when I was in High School. I was sick of Dragon Ball Z at that time so I went back to Magical Girl I watched Wedding Peach and Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. I also went back to Magic Knight Rayearth, Sailor Moon, and Tokyo Mew Mew aka Mew Mew Power. I really like Magical Girl anime and manga. I still enjoy Dragon Ball Z at times but I prefer Magical Girl.
Glad to see someone talk about Wedding Peach.I use to watch it back when it was still available On Demand and re-watched just a year ago. While it certainly isn't perfect, it's far from being the worst thing out there.
Wedding Peach is one of those shows I adore because it’s endearing, and very cringey, and also very funny. Despite it being ten+ years since my first watch, I still find the name the “Saint Something Four” to be hilarious to me. Like, I get completely where it’s name comes from but sometimes it reads as “I can’t remember the name of the macguffin… it’s like, the saint *something?* four??” And to see an angel completely serious ascend from the heavens as seriously as he can say that line with that mindset is really funny. I did always manage to drop off at the second season due to random circumstances, so I’ve never finished it. But one thing I always find weird is how it misses a key love. The themes include more than just romantic love, it’s about all loves. Romantic, platonic, familial, but it somehow managed to miss the last one?? Self love. Come on guys, you had four love angels. Four love angles, four types of love. Bless the dub and all it’s cringe. Whether Gray Haddock is a curse or not is up for opinion, but what’s a blessing is the first time I heard the line “you hussie” screamed into the air in wedding peach and how absolutely baffled I was that they’d wrote that. It will always be funny that it exists.
Granted it's no "Sailor Moon" (in fact, there are quite a few elements in it that are way too similar to "SM"), but "Wedding Peach" does not deserve to languish in the obscurity that it seems to be in. I first became familiar with it when it was on Anime Network, and later bought the first DVD at Amoeba Music in Hollywood a few years ago. I then bought all but the last DVD's at a local comic store that was selling off its discs and tapes. Then I finally bought the last disc online (I don't remember if it was Amazon or Ebay).
This anime was my life as an 8 year old. I would go to the library with my grandmother and I would pick out animes because I thought they were just cartoons. I picked up this anime and it was absolutely my favorite. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it at least five times now. In retrospect, was it the most female empowering anime out there? No, but I appreciated how it was easy to understand the connection between the saint something four and the overall wedding theme. I honestly just wish the wedding dresses were prettier and Scarlett O’Hara’s name really? I really loved this animation style and I always thought the opening and closing themes were great. I think it’s a cute anime that kids can watch and easily understand. While it may have these gender roles within it, I honestly never thought I had to get married or my role was defined by a man because I watched wedding peach. It’s overarching lesson that love conquers all is cute and applicable to many. I liked the characters and I liked how wedding peach explored multiple romantic tropes (frenemies to lovers, childhood friends, love that transcends time). Maybe it’s my nostalgia, but this anime really makes me feel some type of way. Momokos monologues make me laugh now when I used to think they were epic poems. I still enjoy watching this anime.
Such a shame this anime got written off as a Sailor Moon copycat. I LOVE this anime to death. When I was a kid I could only rent Sailor Moon from blockbuster on VHS so it was really hard to watch, but comcast's streaming service had all the episodes of Wedding Peach to watch and I used to binge the heck out of it to get my Magical Girl fix after my mom found it. For the time, the dub actually wasn't bad or all that unfaithful and I prefer it to the Japanese audio. I ended up buying the DVD boxsets at bestbuy some years later as a teenager when it was on sale and have had them ever since. I never would have imagined this show failing so I'm glad I have the DVDs now that they are so expensive and scarce. I wish Wedding Peach would get a reboot, but I fear they'd butcher the animation like with SM Crystals first two seasons.
I adored this show when I was younger. Back when Time Warner Cable was still a company they had a anime channel full of these random shows. Wedding peach was the one that caught my eye, use to pretend to be them with a neighbor of mine. Very fond memories lol
Ah, Wedding Peach. I actually remember watching it years ago when my mother used to have Comcast and had a good time doing so. A funny memory related to it is that my sister got confused and thought I was watching Peach Girl and not Wedding Peach (Mainly due to the fact that they both have "Peach" in the name.) I do remember that during a Skype call of a group I was in at the time, someone proceed to call this series a Sailor Moon rip-off, which looking back I'm just like "Bruh wat." It sucks that Wedding Peach is stuck in a limbo where it's hard to find it legally. Hopefully it'll get re-licenced some day
Hopefuly Viz Media will rescue the anime one day under a new licensing agreement that includes a brand new English dub of the entire series including the OVA's and shorts.
This reminds me of a memory when I was younger like around second grade, my mom would rent the wedding peach disks at the library. I remember I had asked her to get me the disk again so I could rewatch it. Our main library closed so she went to a different one. Basically she confused wedding peach and peach girl and she brought home that one. Although I was sad I didn’t get to watch wedding peach at that time I put the Peach girl one in the DVD, and the first line I hear was “Get in the closet you dumbass”. Remember I was like 7 or 8 and when I heard that I fell to the ground and ran around the room. A moment T-T
I do enjoy watching this. One of the few problems is having 4 magical girls with transformations and all together take up to 2 and a half minutes of screen time every episode. Other than that its pretty good. Peace ✌🏻
I just rewatched Wedding Peach as an adult and I find that it's really your typical 90's anime show but it's still fun to watch. The OVA was not released in our country but it really did look like an anime for boys with all the unwelcome panty shots but I think it's just a long form video of introducing their album. I loved this as a kid and I remember Yousuke was my first ever anime crush. I wish there's really a reboot to this since most 90s shows are getting rebooted.
Wow i didn't know this was made recently xD I'm surprised to see someone talking about wedding peach. I really loved this anime, but there was alot of hate on the anime. I hate that people say that wedding peach is a rip off when literally the same people who made sailor moon. Of course its going to look similar. My local library has both box sets of wedding peach
I think wedding peach was in german speaking countries popular too. At least we got a own opening and sailor moon was also mega big in Germany so my guess
I sought out this analysis because I am considering watching Wedding Peach as part of my classical magical girl research for the story I'm writing--particularly because I've heard that it explores different kinds of love. It's also good to know that it is an example of Magical Girl Warrior, considering a lot of the shows I've seen that I thought fell into this subgenre are more accurately part of the Magical Girl Subversion subgenre. Still trying to figure out what the heck defines the Neo-Classical subgenre, if it's even a proper subgenre... Thank you for making this video! 😄 I always find your analyses interesting and informative, even if certain ones aren't relevant to my writing. Fantastic work!
I remember I wrote down anime that I was going to watch on a piece of paper, one of them was wedding peach. My friend came over and saw the piece of paper. She thought I was planning my wedding even though I was like 9. Lol.
I love sailor Moon but honestly when watching Wedding Peach this was my favorite magical girl anime I don't know why I just fell in love with it when I watched it
This show was a childhood favorite of mine. My mom thought it looked cool and picked up the box set and we both had a blast watching it. It’s fun and while not perfect, definitely had some incredible moments.
Fun fact Wedding Peach was done by OLM Inc Team Ota the same studio and team (OLM Inc has multiple teams that do their own series) who went on to do Pokemon another series that has a Manga published by Shogakukan. Heck most of OLM Inc's animes have manga that is published by Shogakukan. Sure Pokemon is currently being done by OLM Inc Team Kato but originally it was done by OLM Inc Team Ota until sometime during The Battle Frontier Arc when they changed teams to Team Iguchi which didn't last that long until they changed teams again and this time to the current team OLM Inc Team Kato. It probably happened when Goku Iwasa left and opened his own studio called White Fox.
I watched Wedding Peach a while ago through some fansub and I really liked it! Sure, the theme IS a bit weird, but it works. The music is really catchy too. Also I never thought about Scarlet's name being weird, but then again she's the only full angel of the four (Momoko is half angel, while Lily and Daisy are reincarnations of angels), so maybe that explains it? Her Angel name is Salvia too, which doesn't seem like a typical wedding flower. Also Sailor Moon had a character named Rhett Butler in one season 1 episode. It was a cat who happened to be one of the Rainbow Crystal holders. So Scarlett's name isn't a new thing.
Cute anime, comes from a time when anime encouraged girls and boys to grow up and get marry and have a family, many animes from the 80's were like that too. I think a reboot would be good make the show less fuzzy and more saturated in colour
Also give it its own original art style I think that would be perfect
Wedding Peach is definitely a favorite of mine and I also think it deserved a lot better. That said, I just want to add a couple things.
