I've had to order "Slipper Plate & Hub Set' (AR310946) twice for my K4S (same slipper assembly...except the 4S line takes 4 slipper pads). That LiL piece breaks off very easily. It happens when it's OVER TIGHTENED and it just snaps...You can hear it click when u are trying to tighten down the slipper. Now in your case it wasn't done by you, but snapped during production. But what caused it was initial OVER TIGHTENING. P.S. be very careful using the power tool to tighten that down in the future...IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH TO SNAP THAT LIL PIECE OFF. GREAT VID!!

Gear wasn't machined with those extra slots in if for them. I could also swear mine had only one disc on one side. Okay...roll it...Nice catch! I did visit Horizons site, and looked a he exploded view of my Infraction, and yes, there is only one slipper clutch disc. I have to bust your chops about the little gun shaped tool. Anyway, again, nice catch! I'm thinking of getting one of these to add to my growing Arma collection. Next you need the Hot racing diff gears and housings! that'll seriously bullet proof your drivetrain, as I THINK the stock ones are plastic (composite) in those. I also don't see a real way to truly properly set the gear mesh. I always used a piece of loose leaf paper between the two gears, but with that cover off, the gear kinda moves around, which makes it impossible to really get a nice mesh. I advice u to still buy it... theres. Nothing wrong with the vortex.. a lot of RC politics in the game... u dint expect to bash a toy and nothing gets broken. So far so good the quality control on the vortex is good.. IF u bash a real car, u definitely going to need a mechanic to fix it and get parts...
@@1zedlav the way the rustlers is like a slash 4x4 the slipper clutch motor set up modular like traxxas does and it’s longer the hoss matches up real close and is traxxas neediest release so arrma would answer with an rc the rustler is old now compared to a hoss 👍👍👍
My son's brushed Typhon motor blew the back plate off. Luckily it was < $20 for the new motor, but I say this because things can come defective right from the box.

haven't watched it yet. haven't read comments. i'm thinking it's bearings already in my head. every 3S FIRRMA motor i have had so far was bearing fail after 3-5 packs
Earl, I had the same problem with my slipper assembly. I was tightening down the screw in the slipper and I cranked on it to hard. I heard a pop and that's what happened. The brass piece snapped right off . It was my fault when it happened to me. But yours is BS! That's not cool with a brand new car. Horizon should make that right! At least I know I'm not the only one who had this problem! Good video bro!
We never adjusted it intill I was looking for the noise and added the metal gear and couldn’t understand why the slipper was not getting tight pulling thru Rc guy garage is now having about the same noise wonder what his issue is 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Absolutely, like I said it's bullshit yours was untouched. I hope they take care of you on it! I don't even use that spring in my 3s slippers. And I can't tell a difference. So glad to hear you show that. Not a spring, but a spacer! Lol! Very well done video Earl!
Hay, post a video of your rc collection. I have a friend who doesn't believe me when I told him how many cars you have! I think it be really cool to see!
14:06 LOL got me dyin...! you will go viral bro you have too much knowledge not to. It all makes sense in your head and you can describe it. Me, it just stays in my head =) other than that issue it seems to be a good looking truck. BTW that tool is perfect for tatt gun...! thanks bro
Mine broke because I over tightened the slipper during maintenance. Maybe yours was over tightened at the factory. I've seen others reviewing this car say their slipper was locked down. They are supposed to be 1.5 turns out.
@@earlmoorhead5555 if ya look closely, you'll see that the brass bushing is just pressed on to the aluminum slipper plate. The inside of the brass "cap" is actually a very thin part of the slipper plate that broke off. While it's thin, it seems to work just fine as long as it's not cranked on too hard. Hopefully it's the last time you'll have this problem... I was tightening it down, felt it "pop", then the entire slipper just fell apart. It sucks that the guy at the factory threw it together after it broke. My slipper was set perfectly, from the factory. So it's not every truck, maybe just 1 bad assembler.
Hey just a question but from the research I've done and info on the arrma forum. Don't you have to add a extra slipper pad if your running metal spur on 3s versions???
Yes I added one to the back side so there is two slipper pads on both sides the video was to long to add that part as most ppl know on a metal spur gear installation you need 4 pads now 💯💯💯
Ok cool just wanted to make sure. I know your very knowledgeable with this stuff and I just burned up a brand new hot racing spur from not doing my research I guess, lol live and learn
Thanks man, great video. This is what I’m looking for when I’ll have my rustler 4x4 brushed. Get my hands dirty while upgrading it 😂 Hope I can have some advice from you.
Thanks for the video Earl. I have the Vorteks , first day with it today. I also have the had the V3 Big Rock since February. I'm not noticing the Vorteks making the noise you are describing, do you mean the 'clicking' noise that people are commenting on or something different? My Vorteks sounds quite different to my Big rock when they are running, my BR is louder for sure. I haven't checked the mesh in the Vorteks yet but will before it's next run. Thanks again for taking the time to post the video.
Going to add a quick edit - I watched your unboxing and quick run and there it was, the clicking sound. My Vorteks doesn't make that sound, I videoed it today and went and had a listen and it runs a lot quieter than your daughters before you fixed it. Seems like it's a quality control issue. They are made in China after all.
Recall time probably horizon hobby fault. I’m still waiting for a brand center diff for my brand new Arrma Infraction V2 still in box with diff oil everywhere and I called them they said it’s on backorder??!!
@@moereefer Not sure what that means🤷.all rc's have issues. Just make it better. 👍Or quit now. It's really minor and will help you to work on it yourself. ✌️
My neighbors bought two of these and I recently bought two myself threw horizon hobby with their easy pay setup. And mine will be here Monday. But my neighbor blew his motor trying to keep up with my Arrma Granite mega v3 big block brushless conversion. Yeah the vorteks is fast but it isn't 4076 2200kv on a 23T in the granite fast lol. I felt bad for em though he just legitimately got it when this happened. The bearing in his motor blew out doing between 60 n 63mph we was drag racing n I was a good 10foot ahead of em n pulling away and all of a sudden his vorteks slowed down to around a stock Granite mega around 30 35 ish max so he turned it around n brought it back n I done the same n I even beat him back to us n my Granite was way out there past his lol. So something was definitely wrong. It didn't smell like burning wires or anything the esc was cool the motor was hot so he let it cool down n pulled out his outcast 4s n his ol ladies vorteks and we drove around ect n then he used his ol ladies vorteks n wanted to race because hers already had the big speed pinion in it.. so I laughed n said sure let's.do it lol. N I beat him again lol and we done a few more pulls and his ol ladies done the same thing!!! Except hers made a loud bang but still ran just much slower n then it stopped n went stopped n went so we put them on the table and he pulled one apart n I pulled his 2nd one apart to see what's up.. and the bearings in both motors blew apart...... So two destroyed motors and I heard about other vorteks motors giving out when stressed. and I felt bad because he was trying to beat my built up Granite which is insanely fast. It ran a 78.3mph this morning I'm going for 100 mph because I don't think there is a Arrma Granite mega v3 and let alone any Granite to touch 100 mph yet.. I think there is a 100 mph big rock n senton but no Granite yet. Thing is at 70+ the granite isnt to stable... So it's getting typhon arms or a outcast 4s arms tie rods shocks to widen it n give it more strength or I'll see if 6s outcast parts will fit it... I know the outcast 4s parts will because the outcast 4s is actually a Arrma Granite 110% same chassis ect just beefed up a little. So I wanna get her a lil more stable before I drop 6s lipos in it.. Im running it on 3s ovonics and golbat champion 3s lipos I got the big Ovonic 4s golbat 4s and spectrum 3 , 4 , 6 s lipos. I got a max 6 esc in it now I pulled the hobbywing Quicrun BL 120 out which btw is a bullet proof esc it says 3s but it can most definitely take 4s no probs at all. I had a 5200mah 80c and a 8000mah 100c 4s in it and it stays cool. It's a powerful esc for cheap lol. It feed my 4076 2200kv with ease and also my 4076 2000kv and also my castle 1717y which with the castle 1717 it did get a lil warm. But I believe the 1717 will be the new motor for the new esc on 6s for it.. and as for his vorteks's I gave him my spare outcast 4s 3668 motor and installed it and he had a 3660 3300kv I believe spektrum as well he dropped in it until horizon sends his replacement motors.
Great video bro, as always. All these rc companies so worried about pushing out new product to compete with the others it seems durability/reliability fall by the way side with some stuff. Just bought a brand new Xmaxx and the servo died 2nd run out, maybe 15mins in. Smh. Called Traxxas and I have to send them the servo to "investigate" that's bs imo. Same with Arrma and Corally they all have weaknesses that could, at least imo, be easily fixed with some more attention to detail instead of just pushing product out the quickest. Instead it's just "oh buy V2, V3, V4 when they come out, no build it right the 1st time!! Regarding your nails, that was hilarious....who cares?! Dirty Hands, Clean Money! 💯💯👊🏻✌🏻
Hi earl. Great video on that. Good work on finding out the issue. Hopefully mine won't have that problem. Still waiting for the street release lol. Yeah arrma 2 year warranty so don't waste money on parts well only upgrades of course. Enjoy it brother. That thing is fast so be careful with it.
The aluminum slipper plate broke! That brass part just goes over it and gets pressed on. I had a replacement slipper plate come bent out of shape and useless! Amain replaced it no problem. Just sucks! The other problem is the bearing on the shaft side of the motor!!! Just a matter of time? Bearing replacement.
So every vortex who makes that weird sound is because at the factory they overtightened the screw and snaped that aluminium hub?? I was wondering why it was making funny noises when this power system and clutch is used on every 3-4s line but only the vortex was doing it
I’m not sure as I’ve only looked at one not sure but the gear not being round causes the noise my case it didn’t sit flat so it moved in an oval pattern 💯💯💯
I have the same issue on my new Big Rock which I bought end of March in The Netherlands. But it has a new power unit after the original one blew its bearings. Could be a power unit from the same batch as all the new Vorteks models.
My good friend got one an out the box issues first the left front tire was no where near straight then had the binding issue fixed that for him later that day claimed the motor shifted an chewed spur gear probably has this issue in this video as well an he broke an arm I sure there’s more he hasn’t told me
How did you solve the compressed spring issue? I broke the brass piece on mine by tightening the effin thing down so much that the spring pushed the brass piece off.
Thank you dude, my exact problem, I have the exact same noise! I ran about 3 packs through on grass, can you give me the part #’s for what we need to get?
@@earlmoorhead5555 did you have a video on the wheel falling off? I am looking for some info. After 10 min the wheel came out the axle. wheel is on the axle. Not to happy about it.
Rc guy garage has a video on the big rock doing that on a front wheel but the VORTEKS I haven’t had that issue yet but we know it will as the platforms the same just shorter
I know he added hot racing front hubs to correct it but it turned out they caused more damage later than it was worth so he went back to stock front hub ( bearing carrier) to make it stop braking other parts
It’s weird how many complaint videos I have seen on the vorteks and never see any on the typhon or other 3s models. Was considered this model but maybe I should stay away.
So Im curious do I need an extra slipper pad with the metal spur I'm seeing mixed reviews and I just got my son a vorteks and am going to change that plastic spur out asap?
Earl great find there, any idea what makes that piece shear off ? Is it in the factory assembly or when the truck is first run. Also how will this part not fail again ? Great video man.
All great questions my other Platform from arrma are the same and I haven’t had this failure before I believe it’s either a bad batch an assembly problem or something of this nature 👍👍💯💯💯
I think its when not centered and tighten down just piece brass pressed into aluminum, I been down this road 2 hours using diagram and another assy, I bought one off jennys and it was defective , I wish they make upgrade one I may try nut bolt in together just make a locker how much that thing really working like a clutch uk , I hear all votex clicking through yt but not sure thats noise u guys mean .
Yes or a good quality slipper like traxxas uses adding the metal spur it’s hard to find the added slipper pad you need to add on should have a notation with the spur gear 💯💯💯
Yeaaaaaa, my motor is fried on mine. My spur is a little shredded as well. I didn’t think anything of it. Like you said, meh it’ll take some time to wear in and seat. 5 batteries later the motor seized and the spur is shredded. Opened a claim with horizon now for the motor, and might just get a slipper and spur assembly from another model. My first Arrma, and my first bad experience with something like this that wasn’t my fault 😂😂
Interesting! That took some work to figure that one out. Surprised me! fortunately, mine has been solid so far. Question: what battery are you running in yours?
Unfortunately lemons occur in the rc hobby you seemed to have got one, I panicked and cracked mine open and everything is fine. Im ten packs in so far no issues.
The metal gear needs four slipper pads! It’s what the 4s has stock with the metal gear! On the tool, the ‘things’ are used to unscrew the shocks. It keys into the shock body where the shaft enters. That’s how you open the shocks. It’s too bad the brass peace came out; the fourth pad like the 4s line would stop the ‘crush’ as you tighten the slipper. I think it pulled the brass piece out as you tightened onto the metal gear (it is thinner than the plastic spur). Great job non the less. Personally; the dirty hands rock! None of this girly glove wearing stuff!
That's very disappointing, they all seem to have dropped the ball with quality control 🤔 I agree don't need unnecessary breakages on your daughters rc's. Great detective work😎😁
Well Earl, I suppose that once in a while they give us lemons, but you took it and made some lemonade, OH YA! FROM BARRIE ONTARIO CANADA PS, LOL, READY TO WORK ON RC .
I have the same problem on my brand new big rock! Send the motor unit back to my lhs. Was my second new motor. First one blew its bearings on the third run. Bought a granite and a big rock. Granite has a little slop on the motor axle already. Not a fun start for hobby for me. Bit disappointed tbh.

Wow. Was gonna pick up a Vorteks in a few hours. Now I don’t know if I will. Thanks for the info.
It’s a good rc I believe but quality control seems to be an issue is all I’m seeing with rc cars lately 💯💯👍👍
Thanks for the reply. Why do you not think it’s comparable to the Rustler? I thought they were very similar from what I’ve seen online.
@@lordangelspirit but you don’t buy a
New car and fix it before you drive quality control is bad fir sure 💯💯💯💯
Thanks again earl having the same problem. You but it in its place. Thx for the 2 hr you saved me.
Thanks 🙏
My son's brushed Typhon motor blew the back plate off. Luckily it was < $20 for the new motor, but I say this because things can come defective right from the box.
Your the man! You figured it out! I knew something wasn’t right by the sound of everybody’s videos. I knew my ears weren’t lying to me. And you go ahead and do Arrmas job for them. For those complaining about your hands being dirty, lol, we know real men get their hands dirty. It tells people you actually work on stuff. A mechanics hands are never completely clean. We know that. #Salute
Thanks 🙏
I just got brand new out of the box, one wheell wobble, ticking grinding sound on my first run. Gonna tear this shit apart.
Tons of videos 📹 today !!👍 luv them.
Mine wore out the brass cap and the end where it sits causing youre problem floating
I am pick mine up today I guess I am take it part before I run it.thanks for info.
I’d turn it on see if it makes the same noises 💯💯💯
I have a mojave and tons of fun but now wanted to get one of the 3s bashers to travel with but now im starting to think go big rock first? 🤔
Long as you check the mesh and fix it I believe this rc is good 💯💯💯
Big Rocks have issues out of the box too. The entire 3s line shares all of the same drivetrain with the exception of center driveshaft length.
Thanks. Really helpful. Mine arrives this week and I’ll be checking this.
🙏👍👍
My big rock did the same time and had to go get another one from my local hobby shop and has been fine ever Since.
Nice 👍
My son had one didn't like the motor/drive shaft setup felt lose sent back got him a slash 4x4 sct been 2 years very capable traxxas servos are weak adding a savox good to go... like you videos...
haven't watched it yet. haven't read comments. i'm thinking it's bearings already in my head. every 3S FIRRMA motor i have had so far was bearing fail after 3-5 packs
Just got my New Vortek and it doesn't sound the best, ha. I'll check out the spur and pinion. Thanks Earl. Great job buddy. Thanks for sharing. John
Yes they sent a new slipper clutch my hobby shop replaced it the next day so I didn’t have to call horizon 🔥👍👍
Hay, post a video of your rc collection. I have a friend who doesn't believe me when I told him how many cars you have! I think it be really cool to see!
I have one from 2years ago it a lot to drag out over a 100 of them and put them back but in January I’ll be doing it again
Man don't forget the diff cases are void of grease lube generously helps greatly
I'm hoping this is just a rare issue that happens but if it is semi-common the fix doesn't seem to be too crazy at least.
14:06 LOL got me dyin...! you will go viral bro you have too much knowledge not to. It all makes sense in your head and you can describe it. Me, it just stays in my head =) other than that issue it seems to be a good looking truck. BTW that tool is perfect for tatt gun...! thanks bro
same things happened to my big rock or my granite i forget which one
Mine broke because I over tightened the slipper during maintenance. Maybe yours was over tightened at the factory. I've seen others reviewing this car say their slipper was locked down. They are supposed to be 1.5 turns out.
Yes I’ve seen that happen as well it will pull the brass piece out it it’s over tighten 💯💯👍👍
Glad you found the issue. Now i will check mine. Thx for the vid.
Thanks 🙏
Recall time probably horizon hobby fault. I’m still waiting for a brand center diff for my brand new Arrma Infraction V2 still in box with diff oil everywhere and I called them they said it’s on backorder??!!
Well pull it out of the box and fix it. 🤦

Not sure what that means🤷.all rc's have issues.
That’s sounded like a fun day took me an hour to read it tho 😜😜😜😜
Thanks dirty working hands 🤛🤛👍👍
Sold my senton between the rocks getting in and eating the spur it was never smooth pain in the but bought a slash never looked back
Nice 👍
I added a washer and replaced the brass piece with a warranty one from my hobby shop 👍👍
Mine was this way brand new with the rant rant noise.
Same problem i had when using the metal gear
Supplied tool is for the shocks, I wouldn't lose it.
i'm here for watching bro
I don't have an arrma vortex type yet, maybe one day I can have it
I hope so ^.^
Thank you dude, my exact problem, I have the exact same noise! I ran about 3 packs through on grass, can you give me the part #’s for what we need to get?
interesting. Just picked one up for my wife. we have not had it out yet. plan to tomorrow so we will see. Thanks for the info
Nice 👍
@@earlmoorhead5555 did you have a video on the wheel falling off? I am looking for some info. After 10 min the wheel came out the axle. wheel is on the axle. Not to happy about it.
Rc guy garage has a video on the big rock doing that on a front wheel but the VORTEKS I haven’t had that issue yet but we know it will as the platforms the same just shorter
@@earlmoorhead5555 ok thanks. I will take a look for it. So weird. I did not even get a chance to rip the truck my self.
I’ve noticed the first run on arrma cars have the most problems but later they get fixed 👍👍💯💯💯
So Im curious do I need an extra slipper pad with the metal spur I'm seeing mixed reviews and I just got my son a vorteks and am going to change that plastic spur out asap?
Yes add the extra pad as the nut bottoms out and won’t go full tight
Thank you very much I will do that!
I spy a big block xmaxx motor mount in the background?
😬😬😜😜
Earl great find there, any idea what makes that piece shear off ? Is it in the factory assembly or when the truck is first run. Also how will this part not fail again ? Great video man.
All great questions my other
Platform from arrma are the same and I haven’t had this failure before I believe it’s either a bad batch an assembly problem or something of this nature 👍👍💯💯💯
As much as i like arrma i hate the slipper clutch design. All problems would go away with a center differential.
Yes or a good quality slipper like traxxas uses adding the metal spur it’s hard to find the added slipper pad you need to add on should have a notation with the spur gear 💯💯💯
A good center diff would be my most wanted part for this car
Yeaaaaaa, my motor is fried on mine. My spur is a little shredded as well. I didn’t think anything of it. Like you said, meh it’ll take some time to wear in and seat. 5 batteries later the motor seized and the spur is shredded. Opened a claim with horizon now for the motor, and might just get a slipper and spur assembly from another model. My first Arrma, and my first bad experience with something like this that wasn’t my fault 😂😂
I’m having problems with my motor or esc I don’t know what’s wrong and my motor doesn’t have any slope on any of the gears. Is that normal?
Interesting! That took some work to figure that one out. Surprised me!
fortunately, mine has been solid so far.
Question: what battery are you running in yours?
Glad you got it figured out bro
Unfortunately lemons occur in the rc hobby you seemed to have got one, I panicked and cracked mine open and everything is fine. Im ten packs in so far no issues.
Nice 💯👍
Yes I explain that in the running video as I put 4 in it I figured everyone know already 💯💯💯
Awesome job Earl! Thank you man 👊
Thanks 🙏
EARL....to bad about you daughters truck,,,,,,,IMHO,,,armma is pumping so many vehicles so fast,,,,it’s affecting their quality control....
That's very disappointing, they all seem to have dropped the ball with quality control 🤔 I agree don't need unnecessary breakages on your daughters rc's. Great detective work😎😁
Had me stunned for a few hours 😜😜💯💯💯
Well Earl, I suppose that once in a while they give us lemons, but you took it and made some lemonade, OH YA! Now if someone else, like your daughter had this problem, they wouldn't have been able to figure it out, and would've drove it completely to death. Nice catch Earl..
KEEP ON BASHING, OR SPEEDING! FROM BARRIE ONTARIO CANADA
PS, LOL, READY TO WORK ON RC .

Ouch.... May still have to get one for my daughter too 👊😎
Seems like it might be a good or even a great rc but quality control seems to be an issue on new releases but get worked out in the long run 💯💯👍👍
Could I just take the entire spur gear assembly from my Typhon 3s and just swap it out while waiting for a new part?
Yes
Bro you gotta pull back kn the emoji's 15 year old girls arnt watching these videos XD. However I do love the content you know your shit.
Great breakdown Earl...you're a beast.
Thanks 🙏
Does the motor just slide off I’m tryna do it but it’s not moving
After the red stop is removed the motor assembly slides back 👍
Can you put a link for the parts please?
Thanks for putting in the work
Thanks 🙏
Glad you found the issue. This could help a lot of people out 👍
Next you need to replace the motor bearings! I don't imagine Firma has put better bearings in the 3200kv with the Vorteks.
Yes I agree there the same
I've had this happen on the v3 big rock 3 times I went all hot racing slipper metal slipper pads metal diff gears ⚙😳
Mine sounded funny as well... drove fine though.
Yes it will but won’t last long it will ruin the spur gear and the debris will end up in the motor bearings 💯💯
You funny Ed, about your nails not being cleaned., lol

@@earlmoorhead5555 It rocks! Non of this girly wearing glove stuff! Nothing wrong with a bit of grit under the nails! We wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the grit under nails of our grandparents!

I agree but quality control has been terrible with all horizon hobby product this last year hopefully it will get better soon 💯💯👍👍
@@earlmoorhead5555 thanks for the heads up!!!
That adjustable mesh is a pain in the ass isn't Earl! Don't know why arrma went to that. Most people aren't racing their rigs. I think they did it to sell millions of spur gears! Lol
Thanks for the Vid. Appreciate the time you put in. Speaking about brand new products failing, I have a xmaxx 2085x issue is there a contact e mail for you? Thanks
