I received my 2 Aiyima A07 Max amps a few days ago and hooked them up as mono blocks. I'm using an iFi Zen DAC as a preamp. They're driving a Delcoid sat/sub system that's a bit over 40 yrs old. The sub is a 12". I was worried about these amps driving it. Previously, I was running this setup with a QSC GX5 amp that's 500wpc. I'm not disappointed. The A07Max's drive this sub very well. Bass output is what I've come to expect from this sub. Very nicely controlled too...not boomy or muddy. I use no tonal controls and I don't need them. Mids are beautiful and the high end is crystal clear with no harshness. Thx for the review and recommendation of the Aiyima's !
I tried a couple of different powered speaker setups for my bedroom but found them entirely unsatisfactory. None could be played at the volume level I wanted, so I went to TH-cam looking for a channel that could guide me to something decent that I could afford. I ended up here. After watching quite few of your videos, I decided to let this one be my guide and I ordered two A07s, an A3 preamp and a pair of SSCS5s. The amps and preamp came right away but because I bought the speakers through a weird outlet, they were delayed. I couldn't wait for them so when I discovered that Neumi BS5s could be had next day for $110.00, I ordered a set of those to use in my bedroom until the Sonys arrived. I figured I could buy another amp and put them in the living room so I also ordered an A08 for there. Now, everything is here and I have to say thanks to you because your recommendations were spot on. Both sets of speakers sound very good, especially the Sony's and the A08 with the Neumis have plenty of power to fill my living room with sound. I am a very happy man. I have not had a system that sounded this good for at least 20 years and all my music sounds stunning now. I got so excited I ordered a T8 to pair with the A08, and hopefully, I am done. Thanks again. The last time I heard Gentle Giant sound this good was the last time I saw them live in 1979.
I'm an audiophile noob. Today I received my A07 Max, WiiM mini, and a pair of fantastic Neumi BS5 speakers. All from Amazon and spent $278 total. Had a blast hooking it all up and listened for 3 hours. So fun and sounds so good...I've got a new hobby thanks to you! Really appreciate the info!
+1 for the WiiM source pick. I must have tried eight or ten sources over the years going back to Raspberry Pi 2, 3, 3+hat, 4 and then probably another five or six USB DACs. The WiiM Pro was finally what I was expecting then added a Pro Plus. My application is ceiling speakers around the house more for ambient than hifi but respectable. My amps auto-power and with the Yamaha NSIW280CWH3P speakers in the ceiling have been praised for best bathroom experience..... I like the info in this video on adding an outboard DAC to flex. The WiiM ability to sync multiple sources is another feature in its favor. This the first of your videos I've seen - very nice.
The Wiim amp/streamer seems an obvious choice on any shortlist - it also has Sub out facility plus multiroom and plenty apps/codecs. whilst with speakers it goes over $500, its still a good deal and bypasses the first upgrades stages. Add sub later.
I got the SMSL SU-1 and Topping L30II going into Hifiman He400SE. I returned the DAC and amp after 2 days. My ears could perceive NO improvement in audio over the 'crappy' DAC built into my PC. The good news is, I determined that I cant even differentiate between 128 kbps audio and lossless audio, so I am DONE searching for 'higher end' audio equipment.
Great info for those starting out or looking for a small second system. I already have the Sony SSCS5s and it is a great speaker for the price. If you have them less than 3 feet from you, the sound is pretty full, but further away and the bass drops off fast. So it can use a sub. I am probably going to get the Fosi ZA3, but not sure if I am going to need a streamer. I usually listen to higher quality audio from fixed sources. Finally, kudos to Randy for going back to stuff we can afford! All the expensive scrap was making me perturbed as it doesn't do me any good if I can't afford it.
@@TokoTsuki I want to try the Fosi ZA3. I currently have the Aiyima 08 Pro, which is good, but doesn't have the upgradeable op amps. I am also still auditioning speakers. So far the Klipsch RP-600m's are in the forefront, but the mid-range dip on that speaker definitely has to be corrected. The Sony's are more lively in that midrange area, but lack bass. I want to try some vintage speakers as well such as Advents and the B&O CX-100's.
I was lucky enough to get the Fosi Audio ZA3 48 v before they sold out on Amazon. I bought some Elac UB-5 's last April For $269 and had them paired with a SMSL DA9, Topping E50 w/ IFI power supply And an Echo link. So when I switched The SMSL to the Fosi I noticed a lot bigger soundstage and a lot more clarity in my Elac UB5. I was heaaring Instruments and sounds behind me . I didn't realize they were coming from my speakers at first. The Elacs are so clear and the soundstage is huge. . Kind of amazing the difference changing that one component. I am running the E50 as a pre amp and using the remote . The Da9 is now replaceing my Ayima AO7 that runs my Phonograph and now that sounds great now . Love your channel . Thanks . I got the $88 Sonys Sscs5 in 2021 thanks for your tips . Those are in my bedroom with a topping pa3 and a wiim mini. Not sure if I will buy another ZA3 to run mono blocks , Probably wait till they are more available .
Great job - would enjoy seeing this for $1000, for $1500, and (oh no!) $2000. Would make a great series and you could update as new gear comes out. I implemented the Wiim setup for a whole-house (Living/Family/Dining) solution (on your advice) and it's working great. Have an old Pioneer Elite in the Living Rm that sounds great; powered soundbar/Wiim Mini in Family Rm, and another mini in Dining Rm. Now need to figure out the best way to get out to the Deck outside and into the basement - maybe the newest Wiim with built-in amp...
Just started out in audio separates again after a 20+ year hiatus. Thanks to your recommendations I managed to bag a Wiim Mini, Topping DX3 pro, Fosi Audio ZA3 and a pair of Q Acoustic 3030i’s for less than £700. The Topping doubles as my headphone amp for a do it all system. I’m shocked at what you can get for your money nowadays and can’t wait to start adding op amps and maybe another Fosi ZA3 in the future. Cheers Randy I’m now hooked 👍
I got something similar last year. A Topping DX3 Pro+ and an Aiyima A07. I've just ordered some Sparkos discreet opamps to put in the Aiyima. I'm still using my old Sony DX50 speakers from an old system I bought in 2000 (140w 6 ohm 3 way speakers). I also put a powered subwoofer in the mix too.
Time and time again you’re simply right. Been a music head for about 35 years and it took me about 20 years to realize the waste of money (for personal use) some spend. I understand hobby’s all too well, but damn, so many people are just clueless when they come into some money and waste so much on pink elephants that simply don’t deliver a justifiable difference. Good job 👏
As an audio noob myself, I got a pair of triangle aio twins. For the fact that it doesn't support tidal connect I got the wiim mini to deal with that, and I also have a C100 from smsl (basically the same internals and connections as the su-1 as far as I can tell, but with a tiny screen making it a bit more expensive) which I use for when I want to play directly from my smartphone, connected with a cable (through hiby player). Considering that I currently don't have stands for the speakers (* cough * cough * they're on top of chairs and a literal THICK af cardboard box right now 😅) I was thinking of going a different route instead of investing further into those by getting a pair of tower speakers instead. they would negate the need for stands on my current location/config and, tbh, I prefer the look of those. I'm quite fond (visually) of the new kef q7 meta that are coming out soon (updated models) and was wondering if something like this would power them well (reliably and with quality sound). tbh anything that I've seen recommended everywhere in terms of amps and what not are all huge heavy bricks (which i'd VERY MUCH like to avoid) and mostly cost around 1k$ or well over. while I understand that the kind of people buying expensive speakers (they cost me 2 full monthly paychecks so they're expensive to me!) also don't mind the extra investment on these things (it's kind of a given) I'm really not sold on the idea of "having to" splurge on fancy amps too. I understand I'm theorizing pairing fairly expensive tower speakers (1.5k) with cheap amp/dac components, but I feel like it would be worse of a waste to not make use of the wiim mini and c100 that I already have... am I wrong and dumb or...? should I also just give up the idea if I can't afford the "hobby" while it's still time and just be happy with the triangles? I feel like I'm quite a bit invested as of right now to just give it all up 😅 PS: to add some context, from the start I intended to use the aio twins as computer speakers placed on my desk, but it just so happens that I get some crazy reverb with them like that (it's really bad in some songs, you just couldn't enjoy them AT ALL placed on the desk with that going on), so I had to move them behind me (sort of to the middle of the room), hence the current "less than ideal" (to be gentle on myself) situation. it was night and day difference after moving them though. also the fact that these "feature creeps/needs" started showing up due to the fact that I can't just have them plugged on the desk sounding like that (the need to get the wiim for tidal connect and the c100 for non bluetooth phone connection) just started to add up to the "frustration"... hence the current internal debate.
Great video and information. This is exactly the sort of information I was looking for. How would a turn table plug in here? From my limited understanding, the set up described is single channel for a lack of better phrases with the WIIM being your media source. So in essence, you're connections are WIIM ---> DAC --> AMP--> Speakers. At what point of connection / how would you tie in a phono pre amp without disassembling your DAC and WIIM?
Very nicely done! Now I understand where the DAC fits into the workflow! I know: dumb question, but seems like nearly everything has a built in DAC. I've been using Chromecast Audio, which I thought of as DACs. It never occurred to me that streaming is now (I quit paying attention when Roon was still trying to monopolize their own streamers) a competitive space in itself. SO THEN... uh, do I insert a better DAC downstream of my 2023 WIIM amp and... then... circle back into the amp analog? Surely not. But well maybe that will give you an idea. ...I grew up with 'receivers' and those giant "Klipschorns." And the little strobe on the turntable so you could get its speed "just right!" Gimbals anyone? 😂
Wiim amp doesn’t have digital outputs. You would go Wiim mini or pro digital out to the digital in of a DAC and then analog out of the DAC into your integrated
Thanks for all your help! I decided to go with the Elac Unifi 52’s powered by a ZA3 from SMSL Su-1 with music from tidal on my Wiim Pro! sounds amazing to me!
When paired with the right receiver or amp, the Sony is an absolutely brilliant speaker. I've done AB comparisons with it against speakers at 10x the price and it holds its own nicely (and actually outperforms some).
Dear sir I live right across the water from Palm Beach Island... So the goodwill right up the road from my house always has stuff when rich old men die... So the stereo equipment is often older but super high end I got my bookshelf, speakers and subwoofer for $18 all in and it's the second best system I've ever owned... I actually did go down and buy a new amp because there's were so ancient. I couldn't hook any of my new stuff to it but man oh man that I got a good deal on those speakers
There is a dac hdmi converter for your tv that could possibly be a game changer for a bedroom system???? They cost about $20 and convert hdmi signal to rca so can go from the arc hdmi spot so can control volume with the tv remote. I wonder what it would be like to go from that to the za3 would be like, that would be an even cheaper system bypassing the wiim mini and using spotify on the tv. Not as nice streaming from TV instead of control from the phone unless you have Google cast, BUT provides volume control which alot of people would appreciate over having 2 separate remotes and allows for MUCH more equipment choice for amps without remotes. As blasphemous as it might be to say this here, but using that even with a set of computer speakers would be a massive step up to TV speakers for friends or family that don't care as much as we might. Having a little subwoofer can make a massive difference in sound
Currently listening music on Odroid N2 with Volumio, SMSL SU1 and Aiyima a07 max on Polk S60e speakers. Sounds amazing! Better than on my Denon X4500H receiver. Also Aiyima a07 pro with Polk S20e on my PC with Soundblaster Zx sound card. Sound also amazing. The soundblaster might be even better than the SMSL su1
I recently upgraded my speakers from Moukey 3 ways to Fluance Signature 2 ways on sale for about $170 and it is like a whole new stereo. Paired with Aiyima T9 and an Edifier subwoofer and I don't think there's much I'd want to change for a very long time.
@@baseballlife5884 Bookshelf model. I have a small apartment, they sit about 12 feet apart. For my listening needs I pretty much never even reach half volume on amp.
I am not a tech person, but I own ZA3s... And after research, when used as monoblocks, I understand the power is not doubled. However, I believe the amps having their own power supplies is a bonus.
Thanks for these…as a total newb that’s been watching for a while I’d love to finally jump in but have no idea how to connect these things to each other for the best result. Specifically….If I got the wiim pro, the smls and the fosi….how do you connect them and control them?
OMG I’m going to study this video AND all the comments before I build out my home audio system with any other component! I’m demanding about sound as a musician but unfortunately, my wallet simply looks at me & laughs its head off🤦🏼♀️🙄 This concept; however, will help me achieve both the sound quality I want & at a price my wallet appreciates!!😎🙌🏼💜

Thanks to your recommendations, I have just entered the audiophile world for less than $500! bluffing :) q3020i - $219 (black friday), Aiyama A7 Max - $70, SMSL SU1 - $70, Chromecast audio - $50, Hifi cables - $80. Thanks!!
Arguably, the RSL iA255.1 is a better amplifier with far more options. Tone controls, sub out, high pass filter, Bluetooth, USB in/DAC, 7amp power supply. It can't be overlooked for an entry-level all-in-one solution.
The ELAC Uni-Fi UB5 is priced at $199 on Amazon, and the Q Acoustics 3020 was available for $149. These represent superior options for budget-friendly speakers, with warmer and cooler tonalities. I'm not sure Sony SSCS5 ($199) and ELAC BS41 ($149)
Uni 5’s OG’s need a ton of current. Don’t know if these amps couple drive them proper. Q acoustic was a swing and a miss for me. Thanks for the heads up on those.
I don't really know for sure if my Ub5 speakers are getting enough power with the 48v GaN Fosi V3, but it does seem to be fine so far. The amp gets a little warm if they are blasting for a while but I haven't had it cut out or sound bad. Bass is a little more subdued than expected, not sure if that is because of power, break in, or if i expected too much, but the sub picks it up nicely. The woofers have great impact. Some reviews said they seemed rolled off in the high end, but they sound great to me, any more treble would be too much. I think I will save up toward a Schiit Vidar for them instead of upgrading opamps mono mode za3s though. If the v3 survives till then, I'll move it to rears or a desk with something easier to run. I would totally recommend the Elac Uni-fi ub5 at 199, though my experience with other speakers and amps is nonexistent.
I appreciate the fact you offered alternatives in the same price range. I am in favor of buying used on a budget, but good to know what new (condition) products are out there instead of just saying "the Sony's are trash". I have scrounged up 5 x Polk T-15s for about $100 (3 used, 2 new) total, and even though Randy pushed them off the table, they still work well for me.
PLEASE for the LOVE OF GOD do not pay 200 for SSCS5s. They depreciate about 80% as soon as you open the box. Buy them used, there's no warranty but you can afford to replace a bad pair several times over before you get close to paying 200.
@@TheMaevian managed to refrain from mentioning it, as someone in the UK who couldn't buy them if I wanted to I'm sick of hearing about them but that's not his fault lol
@@Harrisongrey19 Well I'm sure they're not bad if you can find them for 40 dollars. I'd much rather buy cheap speakers and upgrade later than buy cheap Chinese electronics to feed good speakers.
I think at this level, I would keep the source and amplification as cheap as possible and push the extra cash towards the speakers. One level up and the speakers will cease to be the bottleneck these ultra budget options are.
Just built my 1st HiFi system. Came in just under $500 minus the iPhone or iPad source via Bluetooth or USB in. Running the AIYIMA A08 pro into the Sony SSCS’5s with a sunfire SDS8 sub w the passive radiator. Got some cheap stands for the Sonys off Amazon and some cheap braided speaker cables. Sounds amazing but definitely looking to upgrade to some cheap small monoblocks , some 6” or larger bookshelves and possibly a lossless digital source, currently running iTunes with most rips @ 320 .
@@theBtotheJ23 yes I got the Monoprice elements speaker stands 24” off Amazon. They aren’t the most solid but I have no complaints they get the job done look nice and the price is right.
Hi Randy, there is a hidden gem for a nice upgrade in the Aiyima line: the Aiyima T2 preamp with tubes and tone controls including medium frecuencies and, as a plus, it has two outputs (for your monoblocks ;) ) and can roll op-amps (2) too for around $80 US dollars!!
Just got into higher quality audio last year thanks to channels like you and a few others. Right now I have a s.m.s.l. su-1 with some super cheap headphone amp, with my pc as my source. This year I already pre-ordered the za3 with the 48v power supply. I plan on getting the geshelli jnog2-socketed, the schiit jotunheim with the phone stage, and the Aperion Novus Open Box speakers. for a system around 2k
Nice Content, i have a Question to the Wiim Mini... why using the SU1 DAC when the Wiim Mini already have a 192khz 24 bit DAC inside ... cant imaging that the SU1 does anything different? Wiim Mini into Fosi V3 should be already work slendid or????
Wiim mini has a cruddy DAC but good optical outs. I went with a Slash3 instead and when combined with a GanFet usb charger is hard to beat for the money. I would bet LDAC Slash3 sounds better than Wiim mini. A review idea for you. I agree the Wiim mini combined with an SU1 might be a golden combo
Townhouse LR system: SSCS5 (paid $120), Aiyima T9 (Paid $109), WiiM mini (paid $79). Rolled A9 tubes (Riverstone $23.95). Feed it with AirPlay or Spotify or Prime Audio. Total ~$332 (had cables already) and sounds awesome. Might add the SMSL dac and a small monoprice sub for giggles. Not as good as the home listening room system (KEF, Boston Acoustics, Denon, Rotel) but not much worse and less than 1/5 the price of the speakers alone. What’s not to like? Thanks Randy!
Forget the source. Simply buy the Wiim amp.. it's the source its the amp it's superb. 300£/$ is compared to streaming amps costing twice as much. Spend 130£/$ on an Edifier sub is def recommended. The Wiim has a sub out direct port and crossover and phase and vol + - 15 db all as part of the app. Best be aware that in my opinion the Edifier T5 is really good value the connector it comes with is complete garbage as are many connecters with less expencive kit. I'd def rec the J&D connectors 1.8 m and experimenting with the position of the sub.. surprisingly in a corner works well for me. I also have it mounted on washing machine anti vibration pucs which I got insanely cheaply from Timu.
I have had several fosi amps, some of them are awesome and some are very bad. The good ones beat out the other amps I have for sound quality, but the bad ones have an audible hiss. Maybe wouldn't rely on one to not blow up your other components.
how about some powered monitors and your existing phone? iphone users have the bonus of a good in the lightning-to-headphone jack dongle, according to comparison tests, in case you wanted to go wired. you can even get lightning-to-ethernet, or usb-c for android users, in case you're in an area or house with unstable wifi. steamers can be any device with an o/s installed. people who live in anechoic chambers need not apply. they may notice a difference
Lots of recievers out there that can do a center channel but they usually work off a 5.1 digital signal. I think I like the idea of the Syn processing the sound from the analog stereo channels in real time better, its more interesting to me anyway.
@@frankplissken143 I already have the WIIM Pro plus and 2 Fosi ZA3 in mono block mode for two channel bliss. But currently I have nothing driving my center channel speaker. That is why I asked.
IIRC, I paid $88 for the pair I have. They are fine if you don't attempt to drive them to absurd SPLs. Especially for that price. That being said, I replaced them with a re-woofered pair of Infinity Reference 2001 bookshelf speakers. My Fosi TB10D drives either set as loud as I care to listen to.
That is actually a great idea. I could change it to a home shopping style. There’s only 27 pair left. Call now before they’re gone. Something like that. Shoot me an email and we can discuss ideas. Brilliant. My affiliate revenue would go through the roof.
My hate comment wasn't directed at the home shopping comment as it was at one person who was repeatedly posting negative comments.Hpme shopping could be fun😅
I did find for it 157 dollars, while a buddy paid 159 dollars, however if I wait, I think it goes on sale for 155 dollars., but that doesn't included shipping, so If I save the 79 cents, then I can get two dollars off coupon, plus a 10 percent rebate over seven Years, minus the rise in prices by Five dollars for the 2024 model...
New to this trying to learn as much as i can. You mention picking up a second amp to power both speakers how would you connect both amps to the dac or would you need something else in between.
Moved to a small apartment and needed a small budget system. Been considering these small Class-D amps, and put together with either a Wiim Mini, or a DAC plus a Google Chromecast Audio via optical input. I'd never the less be constrined to small speakers, and went with the Micca RB42, based on reviews of the above wightsize bass performance. In the end, an end of year sale fopr the Arcam SA10 at $375 including tax prompted me to get that. I guess the attrraction of tradional Class A/B and the inclusion of a toroidal transpormer, built in ESS9016K2M Sabre DAC and a remote drew me to the Arcam. For sure, larger and more effficient speakers would be a better match to the Arcam. The result is decent across the board. 70's rock can be a bit harsh at times, but jazz is impressive, with a nice focused and sperated soundtage, that sometimes goes wider than the speakers, and always gives that nice behind the speakers placement. The Micca's do, with certain music, not dissapear and sound boxy. Surprising given their diminitive size, but going to play with placement and toe angle to see if that can be improved. Given I hade the Chromecast (casting Tida) already, my cost was was about $560, plus speaker cable. In the end, for me at least, if a tradiitonal amp is on some super sale, I'm leaning that way. Still may get a Fosi, just to compare.
is there a benefit besides convenience to buy a music streamer like the wiim or going up to a bluesound node vs just plugging my ipad 3.5mm jack to rca splitter into my stereo amp when using something like tidal? i've only done physical media up till now, and dont' really wanna spend a bunch of money if it isn't going to benefit the audio, i don't mind the connected wire too bad. or would a high quality dac be money better spent, or also a waste of money? so confusing! i am using a nad 316bee amp with kef q350's if that helps anything.
@@jeffp0rn i ended up spending money lol. i got a topping dac and a wiim mini streamer. i will say the convenience is great being able to just use my phone to stream to my 2.1 system. but, it didn't really transform my music listening. it might be a little more enjoyable? i didn't compare to be honest. but, it's definitely not night and day or anything. the main benefit would be the convenience...and with a boosted sound quality some...but how much? i don't know. i don't regret the purchase at all if that helps edit: the wiim mini for 90 bucks, def worth the cost. i spent like 350 dollars on the topping e70. that is a little harder to justify. i do like it though. i think smsl has a 80 dollar dac that is supposed to be good, you could use that to hook up the wiim mini and people have nothing but good things to say about that dac. so 160 would get ya a dac and streaming capabilities. you might not even need the dac if you have an input on your amp for it. good luck!
Hey Randy I just wanna say thanks for all you do! You really help me keep going and you help people out more than you think you do. Just don't listen to the Haters. I appreciate you brother. THX!
Fair warning I bought a few of the Wiim minis and one of them bricked after about a year. The other two seem to be working fine but I’m hesitant to reccommend them now.
Setup question for you. I am building your Aiyima a07 max/ SMSL SU1/WIIM mini/SSCS5 system recommendation. The question is what is your suggestion for a headphone output? TIA
i'll tell you the WiiM with a good external dac is fantastic.. especially if you have a really really strong Wi-Fi signal ,, it's amazing how good it sounds👍 And they keep upgrading the software for the app and the firmware for the unit it's a great company
I not sure why but speakers in the uk are far more expensive than in us the sony ssc5 are £199 so approx 250 US and the elacs are ridiculously priced here nearly £300. The amps are roughly the same price it just seems to be speakers 🤔
Great video. Have you considered reviewing / showcasing older equipment? it's definitely an avenue that would keep in line with the "cheap" aspect of being an audiophile. I have a Wiim Pro feeding the optical input on a Denon AVR-2112CI, which in turn is hooked up to some Cambridge Soundworks M80s. Got the Wiim Pro used for $100, the Denon would cost between $70-100. The M80s are harder to find in good condition, but I've had mine for nearly 2 decades and they sound better than any speaker pair you could get for $700, maybe even $1000. Big 8" woofer, 3.5" midrange, and 3/4" tweeter, double ports in the rear, Mahogany veneer with red stain. I bought some Elac DBR62s and though they are great, the M80s have a much better sound and appearance. Also, I've been looking for a piece of equipment for my desktop computer. Right now I have a T9 Pro, but its pre-out does not change volume with the knob, so it isn't ideal to connect to a subwoofer. Any ideas?
Hi CAM, pardon the question but why would one want to hear something in mono after stereo? Mono doesn't have the same split sound that stereo has. Whats the logic?
Hi! Awesome videos! Two qqs: 1) 1:1 comparison, would you pick the A07 Max or the Fosi ZA3? 2) What would you recommend to buy so as to be able to connect a tv? I want to connect a tv, a turntable (and prob a wiim :)
Maybe it's unit variations or related to what I look out for in my music, but the wiim mini streamers dac and optical out never worked out that well for me.
Excellent video, and thx for the information. I have a question, and yeah, a beginner alert is incoming. So, I just got the Klipsch RP-600M II for a sweet deal !! But now I am unsure what amplifier and source to buy and would like to hear if what you recommend still can be used for it. I would only use this in my office for now or at least until we move next year and hopefully to something bigger. 😅
I watched one of your old videos and picked up a Sony SSCS5 for $68, the A07 for $57, and T8 for $95 using the affiliate links. Gonna put a sound system in the downstairs gym :). Thanks for the help, I liked and subscribed.
Like other commenters I am really wondering how the Wiim Pro/mini coupled with either of these amps compares in terms of sound quality to the Wiim amp. I hear reviewers talking a lot about the features of the Wiim amp but not really highly rating its sound. That kind of leads me to believe that a solution using these separate components might lead to better sound outcomes, but the Wiim amp offers slightly less good sound in a much more convenient and feature packed product. Any thoughts on this anyone?
CAM is back! The $500 man. I like the incremental component journey. However, I do have a gripe about Wiim. I had the Pro and it does NOT integrate with Amazon UHD (natively). This means no playlists and no history. I have time invested over the years on the AZ UHD platform and sent the Wiim back. Using PC as a streamer with HDMI to TV. Then coax out to SMSL SU1. Sounds great up to 24/192. Just added the Douk T8 Pro EQ with volume and sockets for Op amp rolling next. T8 volume controls the fixed coax level out from the TV. I get to see the content on my TV screen (vs a phone or Eversolo screen) and control it with my keyboard/mouse wireless from the listening throne. Be creative with stuff you already own.
I got mine too. Next time you go into the Amazon app portion of Wiim go down to “my music” and then your playlists should show up if you’re signed in properly
You can ditch the PC and stream 24/192 from a $40 Amazon Fire Stick. Lotta streamers with screens out there, but none with a 55" screen and Bluetooth voice remote.
@@somejerk1520 I have Roku app for remote and voice...but only 16/44. I use Media Player for my .wav, and .flac fliles. The Fire stick Max has only 16GB. Not enough. The AZ PC app is the only one that I have confirmed 24/192 while playing (downloaded) AZ tracks AND over an HDMI to coax connection. That chain of cables gives me the 55" screen. My tablet does 24/192 with an external DAC but must use USB and that precludes a larger screen.
So if im running the A07 max in mono and I want to upgrade the op amps like a sparkos ss3602 would i only need to purchase 2 chips? One for each of the left signals since mono is only using one channel in each amp?
I purchased the WiiM amp because of your reviews. I'm so impressed! My main system is a audiolab 9000A/Bowers 705s2/Node 2i and I'm really surprised how good the WiiM sounds with a pair of Totem Sttaf towers. 😮 I use the parametric EQ to get a nice warm balance sound out of the WiiM.
You would probably need a source or DAC with balanced XLR outs. You could also use a mixer with balanced outputs and USB or Bluetooth in but it wouldn't look Hi-Fi.
I bought Nakamichi TA-3A 85 wpc High current Stassis Amplification used for $80. JBL ND310 for 100, upgraded the cross over, 300.00 added bracing, and more insulation, use an Ao7 Pro ass dac LDAC.
I'm looking for one (two actually) of these cheap class D amps that doesn't have volume control. I'd like to get an Arylic B50 because it has HDMI ARC, and then run the L and R outputs each to a cheap amp but be able to control the volume via the TV ARC functionality. Anyone know of a cheap class D that doesn't have volume control or allows HT Bypass functionality? Thanks.
So I'm really intrigued by the ZA3, but hesitant to pull the trigger. I've toyed with several other of the Class D's over the past 18 months, and I've been wanting to get into a monoblock setup. My hesitancy now is that the ZA3 is not really bridged, and doesn't really leverage the full power. Pardon my lack of technical depth, but I think it basically just "shuts off" the left channel, rather than bridging the amp? I'm wondering if the next iteration takes the next step to leverage the full power of the amp? I know it's fine for most of my speakers (mainly running Klipsch RP600M IIs) but I have some vintage speakers that really like power (Dahlquist DQ-10 among them) that I would love to hear sing in this setup. Any insight if Fosi may be iterating to leverage both channels' power in mono mode? Love the variable sub out on each as well...that was holding me back on others :-)
Do you do any simple woodwork? You could build a itty bitty dorm sized rack for all these mini components. Mount a powerstrip on the back, do some nice cable management, put a carry handle on top. Call it the Cheapaudioman super boombox.
Really appreciate the info!
enjoy the music man and avoid swallowing an audiofoolery pill in dac amps there's not a lot to gain going up the price, speakers are where it's at.
Great stuff! Here's another alternative, Powdered speakers + DAC:
( Amazon UK prices)
Adam T5V - £290 (pair)
SMSL DO100 - £144
Source - Your PC,TV, phone 😅
Total: £434
How's your system coming along? :)
For those who would prefer simplicity, how does the audio quality of the Wiim amp compare?
Klipsch R14 and B200 synergy black are decent sub $200 speakers. Great advice as always
Where and for how much did you snag the 3030i's for buddy? (I'm in the UK as well)
I got something similar last year. A Topping DX3 Pro+ and an Aiyima A07. I've just ordered some Sparkos discreet opamps to put in the Aiyima. I'm still using my old Sony DX50 speakers from an old system I bought in 2000 (140w 6 ohm 3 way speakers). I also put a powered subwoofer in the mix too.
you can get a used pair for £150, or new for 250@@satheesh85
Amazing the price difference in UK.. the Sony's are $400 / £350
Yeah but I think the Q Acoustics are cheaper in the UK than the US, so swings and roundabouts :)
I feel like I'm quite a bit invested as of right now to just give it all up 😅
PS: to add some context, from the start I intended to use the aio twins as computer speakers placed on my desk, but it just so happens that I get some crazy reverb with them like that (it's really bad in some songs, you just couldn't enjoy them AT ALL placed on the desk with that going on), so I had to move them behind me (sort of to the middle of the room), hence the current "less than ideal" (to be gentle on myself) situation. it was night and day difference after moving them though. also the fact that these "feature creeps/needs" started showing up due to the fact that I can't just have them plugged on the desk sounding like that (the need to get the wiim for tidal connect and the c100 for non bluetooth phone connection) just started to add up to the "frustration"... hence the current internal debate.
If you are going for the dual mono ZA3 you could run the Micca RB42 really well, for some great bass in a tiny speaker for 150 a pair
I still love my Micca bookshelf speakers....MB42s I think. They are really cheap and sound really good.
You would go Wiim mini or pro digital out to the digital in of a DAC and then analog out of the DAC into your integrated
..... and had a wired network, probably the best feature.
Who uses Bluetooth and audiophile in the same sentence?
Thanks for all your help! I decided to go with the Elac Unifi 52’s powered by a ZA3 from SMSL Su-1 with music from tidal on my Wiim Pro! sounds amazing to me!
When paired with the right receiver or amp, the Sony is an absolutely brilliant speaker. I've done AB comparisons with it against speakers at 10x the price and it holds its own nicely (and actually outperforms some).
Which speakers?
Also curious as to what 10x price speakers you've heard.
Dear sir
I live right across the water from Palm Beach Island... So the goodwill right up the road from my house always has stuff when rich old men die... So the stereo equipment is often older but super high end
I got my bookshelf, speakers and subwoofer for $18 all in and it's the second best system I've ever owned... I actually did go down and buy a new amp because there's were so ancient. I couldn't hook any of my new stuff to it but man oh man that I got a good deal on those speakers
True, I just got a Fosi V1.0B amp from Goodwill online for $20. Box was still in cellophane.
Excellent. I would love to see a similar recommendation for a home theater. My sound bar isn't cutting it anymore.
If you know this, you are a tech person
Ha ha! I wish! I am good at reading the expertise of others and regurgitating it! Best wishes!@@KhanJoltrane
Thanks!!
Have a set of Mordaunt-Short speakers and a Chromecast audio laying around, you just provided the required information for the missing link, thanks
Hi, do you have 902i? I have a chance to buy it very cheap and put them in the same setup (Wiim mini-Su1-Aiyima 7Pro)
UB5’s get here Friday
Only in the US, you can’t find these speakers in EU
I’ll stick with my Wharfdale 12:1s the Sony speakers aren’t even available in the uk 🇬🇧 where I live unless you find them on eBay for silly money 💴
Don’t buy these speakers at all. They’re fucking trash
Should have shown a picture of the system put together also a diagram.
Thanks for that feedback.
Luvly jubbly! Great new-year bargain options. Have a good one!
I think at this level, I would keep the source and amplification as cheap as possible and push the extra cash towards the speakers. One level up and the speakers will cease to be the bottleneck these ultra budget options are.
Very True. Spend most of your cash on speakers.
Can you do a blind test on the Fosi and the Aiyima?
Just built my 1st HiFi system. Came in just under $500 minus the iPhone or iPad source via Bluetooth or USB in.
Running the AIYIMA A08 pro into the Sony SSCS’5s with a sunfire SDS8 sub w the passive radiator. Got some cheap stands for the Sonys off Amazon and some cheap braided speaker cables. Sounds amazing but definitely looking to upgrade to some cheap small monoblocks , some 6” or larger bookshelves and possibly a lossless digital source, currently running iTunes with most rips @ 320 .
I'm looking to get stands for the same speakers. Would you recommend the ones you got? If so, would you mind telling me which ones they are please.
@@theBtotheJ23 yes I got the Monoprice elements speaker stands 24” off Amazon. They aren’t the most solid but I have no complaints they get the job done look nice and the price is right.
@TheSixsixsick Thanks dude. Are you using them on hardwood or carpet
@@theBtotheJ23 carpet, comes with metal feet and also rubber bushings in case you are using on hardwood so they should work on either
@TheSixsixsick OK good. I'd be using them on carpet so it's good to know they work.
Great recommendation! Thanks
This is a good point!
Would it make sense to just connect an iPhone via USB to a dac/amp combo? I am unsure why I should get a streaming device.
What about if I need a center channel for movies off of a TV? Should I get the Schiit Syn? Is there any other options?
Lots of recievers out there that can do a center channel but they usually work off a 5.1 digital signal.
I think I like the idea of the Syn processing the sound from the analog stereo channels in real time better, its more interesting to me anyway.
@@frankplissken143 I already have the WIIM Pro plus and 2 Fosi ZA3 in mono block mode for two channel bliss. But currently I have nothing driving my center channel speaker. That is why I asked.
Good show, as always!
Sony SSCS5, the most returned speaker at Amazon.
Yea I don't like them either. Makes a Great garage or shop speaker tho (party speaker)
Thank you, Randy. Great response. Keep on with what you're doing. I really don't understand the hate. 😢😂
This was the exact same question I had and was hoping to find an answer in the comments. Did you ever get a good answer?
@@jeffp0rn i ended up spending money lol. i got a topping dac and a wiim mini streamer. i will say the convenience is great being able to just use my phone to stream to my 2.1 system. but, it didn't really transform my music listening. it might be a little more enjoyable? i didn't compare to be honest. but, it's definitely not night and day or anything. the main benefit would be the convenience...and with a boosted sound quality some...but how much? i don't know. i don't regret the purchase at all if that helps
edit: the wiim mini for 90 bucks, def worth the cost. i spent like 350 dollars on the topping e70. that is a little harder to justify. i do like it though. i think smsl has a 80 dollar dac that is supposed to be good, you could use that to hook up the wiim mini and people have nothing but good things to say about that dac. so 160 would get ya a dac and streaming capabilities. you might not even need the dac if you have an input on your amp for it.
Can i add a turntable to this? What would you recommend?
Gr8t Video ! Keep up the good work ! Always enjoy your vids. I enjoy my ELACs
Setup question for you. I am building your Aiyima a07 max/ SMSL SU1/WIIM mini/SSCS5 system recommendation. The question is what is your suggestion for a headphone output? TIA
I believe you don’t care for tubes, have you tested a combo of any fosi or AIYIMA amp + tube preamp ?
Curious about your thoughts
It must be real windy where your at. I can hear the wind blowing.
Can I use a Wiim mini with an SMSL SU1 and a BT20A Pro? How would they all connect in what series and what would power the SMSL or the Wiim?
Upgrade the op-amps? What's in there now and what would you suggest upgrading to?
i'll tell you the WiiM with a good external dac is fantastic.. especially if you have a really really strong Wi-Fi signal ,, it's amazing how good it sounds👍
And they keep upgrading the software for the app and the firmware for the unit it's a great company
you have have already done one but we need an affordable patio/back yard setup break down
Excellent video. First steps for hifi. I may use this for a guest cottage set up or a garage setup. Sounds perfect.
Love this!
I have the Aiyema A07 max with 48v paired with the New $265 Cerwin-Vega! LA165 bookshelf speakers, great sound and match.
I not sure why but speakers in the uk are far more expensive than in us the sony ssc5 are £199 so approx 250 US and the elacs are ridiculously priced here nearly £300. The amps are roughly the same price it just seems to be speakers 🤔
What about Fosi audio BL20A, BL20C? I would like to hear your opinion about amp Arylic B50 as well. Thank you
Good video Randy. Wondering if you could do a video for inexpensive home theater system for under $1K? Maybe start 5.1 with upgrades to 7.1, 9.1, ?
Any ideas?
Great Stuff Randy!!! 👍👍👍
Hi CAM, pardon the question but why would one want to hear something in mono after stereo? Mono doesn't have the same split sound that stereo has. Whats the logic?
Hi! Awesome videos!
Two qqs:
1) 1:1 comparison, would you pick the A07 Max or the Fosi ZA3?
Justt watched this whole thing and have no clue what they are supposed to do. D.A.C. concept sounds cool, though!
I need a new dust filter for my hoover max extract pressure pro model 60
What’s a good replacement for my SONOS S1 components?
Fun video! It reminded me of a Saturday speaker shootout. ❤
How about Fiio BR13 as LDAC bluetooth receiver, any play?
So if im running the A07 max in mono and I want to upgrade the op amps like a sparkos ss3602 would i only need to purchase 2 chips? One for each of the left signals since mono is only using one channel in each amp?
How about some studio monitors with unbalanced RCA inputs? If the pros use them to mix, why not use what the pros use? I'm just asking questions.
I purchased the WiiM amp because of your reviews. I'm so impressed! My main system is a audiolab 9000A/Bowers 705s2/Node 2i and I'm really surprised how good the WiiM sounds with a pair of Totem Sttaf towers. 😮
I use the parametric EQ to get a nice warm balance sound out of the WiiM.
What kind of equipment do i need for JBL 305P MKII ?
You would probably need a source or DAC with balanced XLR outs. You could also use a mixer with balanced outputs and USB or Bluetooth in but it wouldn't look Hi-Fi.
Any suggestion for a DAC for the Wiim pro plus?
Thanks.
Currently in Canada may 2024: Elac =$310cdn
Sony=$350cdn
Daamn
Can you do a video of hooking the equipment up, please?
I'm looking for small subs to go with monoblock, 8 in, or less. Just enough to fill in. Any recommendations?
I would love to get ZA3 but its not available on my local amazon yet so looking at V3 🤷♂️
Do you do any simple woodwork? You could build a itty bitty dorm sized rack for all these mini components. Mount a powerstrip on the back, do some nice cable management, put a carry handle on top. Call it the Cheapaudioman super boombox.
That would be super cute. I think I will
