any cymbal can suck if you play it out of the context for which it was designed. these cymbals were designed for a specific style and aesthetic, eg 8-bit, lo-fi, drum machine-y type applications that cork sniffers don't normally look for (or necessarily want) in a "normal" cymbal. doesn't make them bad. I wouldn't try to bring them to a conservative jazz gig or a rock gig as my main cymbals...but neither does Daru! the cymbals were also explicitly designed to mix and match as a set, which is another reason why they are all 12" apart from portability, weight and voicing. the fact that you found combos that work for you is a testament to that aspect of their design.
The genius of the set is they are all the same size so you can do a lot of mix and match like this. Agree they aren’t my favourite when used in the first configuration. Would love to hear a 14” version of the set.
I saw an LP video for tambo-rings with Daru and I can’t tell for sure, but it looks like he is using a set up similar to yours. Definitely looks like he is using the ride for the top hat and the top hat as a crash (not a stack though). He’s got a more traditional ride with a tambo-ring on it
I definitely like the 2nd configuration. Making the best out of what you had really paid off - I like the sound! Even if Paiste did not intend them for this setup. I almost want to buy the set just so I can configure them like you have!

Beautiful playing. Luv how you tried and succeeded at finding a good sound with these.

The hi hats sound pretty good
i'm buying the ride to make it a hat top with a 12 heavy splash
Let us know how it sounds 🙂

Love the stack sound
Sounds like when I put my HCS hihat top as "splash"
Lmao it ended up as an hi hat top
Well we couldn't leave it as it was 😬🤣
What is that clamp you are using for the stack to make a quick switch from tight to loos sound?
It's a Tama X-Hat attachment 🙂🥁
Good review. Your final set up was up my street
Thank you, we had fun making this one 😃
You're playing is killer 🥵
this would be a cymbal set that i would but for my son if he had like a small drum set
What ride cymbal are you using on the right above the stack?
That's a Sabian Big and Ugly 22" Monarch Ride 🌑
@@drumdog Great ride cymbal, i personally own it and it's great for all musical styles
Daru makes them work
He doesn't use them for serious live music.
It’s not for normal drumming lol
Right!
The step sound......
You have to know how to play it
