I still don't really understand why F1 is not using F1Digital coverage for seasons 1997-2002 on F1TV. It would be great to view separate channels or to compare the differences with Global feed. And most importantly - to see the father of F1TV. Boy it would be a treat.
Related question: the F1 1997 season review on VHS features a promotion for F1Digital+ at the end (from where a lot of the footage in this video is taken). Is this promotion retained in the current DVD release and on the F1TV version?
I can remember begging my dad to get this just before the 2002 season started, but we just couldn't afford it. I really think this might have taken off more if it had been available in the UK when it first started in '96 instead of just the '02 season. From what i've seen of the coverage it was a far better product than ITV which was never able to show the practice sessions, always having to keep one eye on the TV schedule when a red flag came out and need I mention constantly interupting the action with those annoying ad breaks.
Hadn't heard of it before this - was probably too young and my Dad was always very against paid TV channels. To what extent is it just the "right time" for F1TV now because there is little free coverage do you think?
I think that it’s a combination of little FTA coverage and that attitudes within society have changed in general. We live in a subscription-based world and F1TV is in a much better place to thrive than F1D+ 20 years ago as a result.
I dont know much about other countries, but until Sky F1 lose their exclusivity in the UK, i'll be sticking with them - too much to love about Martin Brundle and team.... Will they move over to F1TV when the deal ends?? If so, F1 can have my money instead
