    I havent bought frogs in a long time...... i got a bunch of the lunkerhunt frogs from a friend for $2 a piece, he didnt like them because of the legs but i tore the legs out of them and shoved a skirt through them..... i like them because the plastic is softer but still durable enough to last a bit. the currnet rod that im using for frogs im also using for bigger jigs, falcon jason christie rod its a 7'3" H mod-fast got it for $43 at walmart a while back and have been using 30lb 4 strand j-braid on it with no problems got the line for free and didnt want to waste it.

    I could talk froggin for hours too. My first frog rod was the Veritas, but I actually liked it better in the medium/heavy fast action 7ft 3in. I have it in heavy action, but like the medium/heavy better. My current frog rod is the Johnny Morris Platinum Heavy action, 7ft 3in I think, thanks to a Bass Pro Shop gift card from a friend. It feels so much better balanced, and is lighter than the Veritas. My current frog reel is the Daiwa Tatula CT in 7:3 retrieve. I prefer the 7 ratios in my bait casters. This year I'm going to see how my Shimano Curado DC handles frog fishing duties. Braid all the way for frog fishing, when the pads are in full, and the bite is on, I use 50lb test Suffix 832. I have 2 favorite frogs, although I do use others, the Snag Proof Phat Frog, and the Teckel Sprinker. When I need more distance, I'll cut the skirts real short on the Phat Frog, and take the prop off the Sprinker. My current PB is on the Teckel Sprinker.

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! I love the sprinker too. Great way to cover water and can still be slowed down and worked like a regular frog.

  • @johnhancock517
    @johnhancock517 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Another great video man! On the mono issue, Bamabass absolutely puts the hammer down on some toads with a medium heavy lews and 17 lb stren mono. I (and MANY other people apparently) asked him why he didn't use braid and he said he used braid in pads and heavy cover but in open water, he felt like he got more bites with mono. I'm gonna have to try it. I 100% agree about the $500 rod issue. My first frog rod was a $59 7 foot medium heavy ugly stik. Heavy as hell but it worked until I was sure I wanted a stiffer rod for frog and jig fishing. Keep up the good work man! It's greatly appreciated!👊

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huh! That's an interesting concept. I may need to try that out. I know some guys swear by mono for everything (my old man) 🤣

      @@DEBOSFishing If it had came from one of my friends I'd have sworn they were full of it but I've watched his videos for years and him and his wife straight up catch some giants man. He mentioned in his video where he addressed the question that you just had to reel down a little extra so there wasn't too much stretch when you set the hook. I'm going to try it and see.

    So spot on debo with rod selection. I run a dobyns fury 735 for froggin. Any rod I use for moving baits or top water I just can't justify spending big bucks on.

    • @Justin.Hawkins
      @Justin.Hawkins 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will add, personally I prefer a extra fast tip on my frog rod. When I try and walk a frog with a fast action I get sloppy with it, the extra fast action for whatever reason helps me walk it way better

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the tips. I have not had too much success frog fishin, so, it’s good to get recommendations from someone with more experience and success. I bought some 65lb braid on sale last year, but struggle with dedicating one of my few rod and reel combos to froggin. So, I use 17 lb mono, to allow me to use the setup for other top water stuff, like the choppo. Plus, I don’t have too much thick stuff to pull through in the lake I fish, so, I’m mostly in open water over flats and wood. Thanks for the instruction, keep em comin’.

    Great video man! I used to like a longer rod up to 7'11" but over the years I've gone much shorter...down to a 6'8" but I've settled on a 7' heavy with a mod fast action. I like a 7 speed reel with 50lb FX2. Feel the weight of the fish and jack em! 👊💪

    I'm using the TP1 black 7'4 heavy and I'm loving it. but I'm using a Shimano Curado 200k (CU201XGk) 8.5 in left hand retrieve. I do most of my bass fishing from a kayak and have found this is the ultimate setup for me. I had a lews LFS on it at first and found this one and the lews I took off worked better setup this way for my techniques. on the boat I use my lews 7'6 mag heavy custom speed stick magnum and bought a Curado 200k for it. using 65 pound Seaguar smackdown on the big combo, my 7'4 I use 50 pound smackdown. and I don't have a problem at all with with my guides getting trash or slop in them. you can drop your equipment if you match the frog. I fish my smaller popping frogs on a lews custom black with 30 pound smackdown just back the drag off and you're good. youre right just gotta find what works for you. my frogs are a secret haha

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, multiple ways to do it and set a combo up. As long as you're catching fish on a frog...you're doing it right 🤣👊

    I used a 7ft MH rod with the Revo X in 7.3:1 for almost everything for a while. Caught one frog fish last year at night with my black prop frog with that setup. Waited a second or two after the initial blowup to set the hook. It was awesome! Might be sending the Revo EXD to you soon, sir. Great viDebo! 👊🏼

    Man thank you for this. Frog fishing is an aggravating addiction for me. I actually hook around 2 out of 50 hits. Seeing you and others catch fish on frogs tells me it can be done but I need to learn the secret haha

    • @DEBOSFishing
      @DEBOSFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, you're going to have blowups and misses on frogs. Coming through stuff they can't always see it. You also don't have two treble hooks hanging down if they swipe. They HAVE to eat it and you have to get that hookset. Not like just pulling in to a treble hook Topwater.

    • @vivalabad6
      @vivalabad6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its nothing you're doing...its just the fish and how they grab the lure. Its a lot of luck with a lot of cover because they may even miss it entirely. I'm pretty sure I've had a lot of pickerel blow up on it as well and there's no way they're fitting a frog in their mouth in a way it can be hooked.

  • @sjones7400
    @sjones7400 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That was a great vid👍👍👍. Learned me a thing or two and it gave me a couple of ideas for next time I throw a frog. As far as what reel to use next.....go back to the LFS. I love those things. Got three of them and settling on one brand/type of reel for all my bait casting was the way to go for me. Made me a much happier feesherman for sure. But do show us what you end up using for the frog reel this year. Inquiring minds need to know😜

    First of all DEBO, fan-freakin'-tastic in-depth frogging tips brother! You absolutely hit the nail on the head. Powerful rod, heavy line, stout reel, and swing for the fence when the pitch is a strike.
    My frogging combo: Abu Garcia Vendetta 7'3" MH (they run heavier than most rods) Fast Action rod paired this year with a BPS Pro Qualifier II Limited Edition 7.5:1 reel. I don't fish anywhere with super heavy cover so I can get by with 40# test, but that's the lowest I'll go. Knuckles bud!👊👊👊

    Yeah can’t wait for froggin season although I almost never want to stop throwing a frog. I use a Phenix Maxim 7’11 heavy paired with a abu gen 3 rocket for my frogs which seems like over kill but I like bombing it down the fairway using frogs! I’ve actually had more luck not paying attention and looking away from the frog while walking or popping the frog by just listening for the blow up then take that initial couple of seconds to look back at the spot where the bite was then hammer it home with the hook-set! Usually works! 🤷🏻‍♂️

      DEBO'S Fishing yeah man, if u look away while workin the frog but slightly be cautious for the blow ups from the fish. The time it takes u to react uses up those split seconds of making sure the fish has the bait in its mouth. Then just hammer it home with the hook set! Heard it on MLF one weekend. It works most of the time!
