    Every year, TCM says goodbye to those we lost and tears appear in my eyes after the first viewing. It's phenomenal what the people at Turner Classic Movies are able to capture in under five minutes for the multitude of loss we who have appreciated the art of film feel each year. I feel I say this every year, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in their Oscar In Memoriam part of programming should take their cues from TCM.

    I owe my health to Ray Liotta. He did a stop smoking aid commercial and, since I admired the guy, I paid attention to it and later used it to quit smoking. It was the most positive change I've ever made in my life and I wouldn't have made it had he not promoted the product.

      The Academy In Memoriam is terrible. Still a nice tribute, but the camera always has to cut back to the pop singer they choose to sign the tribute song. It should be about the talent that passed, not the currently living singer. TCM's efforts show more respect to those who we lost.

    When they did Ivan Reitman, the song was at "to the ghost of you" which is fitting with the scene from Ghostbusters. Larry Storch to my knowledge was the final big star from The Great Race to pass away. Now he has some fighting room. Angela Lansbury was a class all by herself.

      I love it when they do stuff like that. My favorite was the heavy bass riff that comes in when Angelo Badalamenti shows up. Perfect touch of subtlety and doesn't take away from the song neither.
      Whomever Edits these will win an Oscar one day...

  • @YankeeCountess
    @YankeeCountess 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The DETAIL of the editing of TCM's memoriam compilations is truly breathtaking. When the song lyrics sing "...I'm haunted by the ghost of you...", they match the lyrics with Ivan Reitman, director of "Ghostbusters". Later, the lyrics: "...the night is full of terrors..." are matched with images of Hammer Horror icon Veronica Carlson, and the clip of David Warner from "The Omen". And my personal favorite, matching that bit of Angelo Badalamenti's famous "Twin Peaks" score with the song in the video. Honestly, these memoriam vids deserve an Editing Oscar of their own.

    I watch these videos with sadness and appreciation each year. We have lost a lot of people whose work was a part of our lives. Angela Lansbury’s passing was symbolic of the end of an era in Hollywood that I loved, musicals. Betty White didn’t get shown last year because she died New Years Eve. The memorial video done by TCM is probably done weeks in advance so those that unfortunately pass on the day the video airs don’t have time for pulling clips of their work, editing them and adding them to the video. It would be nice if there were another video released a few days later in the New Year, to honor those entertainers that pass on New Years Eve each year, to at least acknowledge their passings.

      I imagine they probably could have if they wanted, they did it for Carrie Fisher back in 2016 when she passed on Dec 27th. But I suppose everyone was off for the holidays.

    • @ksol1460tv
      @ksol1460tv ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sabotage Film Group, who produce these lovely clipreels, are very concerned about having to leave out people who die after the early December release date. Several times, they have re-edited to include someone, or simply add them the next year. The producers jokingly (?) claim to pray for everyone else to "hang on through the holidays, please!"
      The 2016 Carrie Fisher incident was particularly upsetting because she (Dec. 27) and her mother Debbie Reynolds (Dec. 28) died a day apart, and Debbie's last words had been "I want to be with Carrie." They had previously slipped in a clip of Zsa Zsa Gabor (Dec. 18) and were able to add a clip of Carrie but apparently couldn't do any more last minute edits (perhaps not without cutting someone else out). For 2017 they used a home movie shot of Debbie with baby Carrie kissing and playing, showing they were together after all.

      God Be Willing, TCM will remember Ted in 2023. Not to be insensitive-FAR from it!!!-but there are COUNTLESS parts of a whole in the film 🎞️ and entertainment industry, that I imagine it IS difficult to keep track of ALL involved. Many actors/actresses, and those “behind the camera 🎥” either disappear from the public eye or get overlooked, fading into obscurity. Nobody likes to be…forgotten, but sadly, sometimes, this just happens (even to those who’ve had such a large impact on film 🎞️ AND television 📺…☹️).
      Then again, there are those who CHOOSE to just…DELIBERATELY slip away or intentionally bow out and move on.
      Peace be with you, my friend, and to all who read this comment…😊.

    People may not believe me but Alfonso mejía is actually my great uncle and as I’m currently a college Freshman, I’m so glad that I discovered in 2022 that I’m related to him which is how I got my passion for the performing arts. As someone who was a 2000’s kid, I also remember listening to the grease soundtrack on repeat and watching the movie on DVD and I have Olivia Newton John to thank for that even though I’m more of a Rizzo than Sandy. I also have Angela Lansbury to thank for igniting my love for musical theater because Beauty and the beast was one of my favorite movies growing up next to Flashdance and fame with Irene Cara.

      You can find a boatload of movies from TCM on the HBO Max streaming service. I counted 22 films just in its French New Wave collection of French films from the 1950s and 1960s. There's many great Old Hollywood movies to view in the TCM section on HBO Max. I signed up for HBO Max last November when they had a Black Friday offering of $2.99 for the first two months and then $9.99 a month thereafter. Finding the time to watch all they have to show is the hard part.

    TCM you forgot Jacques Perrin! Who could forget the last scene of him watching the spliced clips of classic film kisses in the end of one of the greatest films of all time---Cinema Paradiso. I dont know one person who got past that ending without balling their eyes out. In part due to his superb acting and raw emotion not just the plot. He definitely deserved a spot.

    Life is extremely short , we age and miss the talented entertainers who make us laugh, cry, and forget our sorrow and sad reality of life, we are going to farewell our beloved friends as a relative as well, so bye my friend until we meet them in heaven forever.

    Wonderful remembrances ! Wish the clips were longer to pay tribute to these great artists - could watch 2 hours. No music needed : just their great spoken revelations from the behind the scenes collaborators and the performers.

    for all of existence you just lived and died, and if you were the richest of the rich maybe you had one portrait made of you, or two. but now we can see people at their very best. watch them, at their best, whenever we want. and it kind of makes them immortal. that's what I think when I watch this.

    At 2:24-2:25, when Badalamenti appears, there is a two-note figure in the bass of the song that evokes his famous Twin Peaks theme. Perfect.
