    It is also important to note that this song was written by Charlie Chaplin... which makes it even more poignant especially if you know a bit of his story.

      This. From his iconic role as The Tramp to his real life story, it brings such a deeper meaning to this song to know it was penned by Chaplin. It's as if he is telling himself to get up, dust himself off, and realize that "life is still worthwhile". It's the old "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" treatment for depression and trauma.

    Check out "Killing me softly" and "First time ever I saw your face", "The closer I get to you", "Where is the love" by Roberta Flack. She wasn't just a great singer, but an incredibly intelligent and deep singer and piano player. You will love her songs.

    • @willdwyer6782
      @willdwyer6782 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was written in 1957 by Ewen McColl and originally recorded by Peggy Seeger. It had been covered many times by the time Roberta Flack recorded her grammy winning cover. Killing Me Softly was also a cover, originally recorded in 1972 by Lori Lieberman. Roberta Flack's recordings of these tunes made her the first artist to ever win two consecutive record of the year awards. So far only U2 and Billie Eilish have matched that milestone. The other songs you mentioned are duets she recorded with Donny Hathaway.

      BTW, Lori Lieberman's songwriting contribution to Killing Me Softly was inspired by Don McLean after she attended one of his concerts. I imagine Vincent (Starry Starry Night) was the tearjerker that got to her.

He is best known for "Mona Lisa" & "Unforgettable" but he had so many great hits such as "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66", "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons", "There! The Christmas Song, known by its opening line, "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire", was written by Mel Torme, but was a huge hit, also, for Nat "King" Cole. Other favourites at Christmas are his renditions of Frosty the Snowman, O Little Town of Bethlehem, O Holy Night, Joy to the World, and O Come All Ye Faithful/The First Noel. Check out L-O-V-E, Unforgettable, Sweet Lorraine, Mona Lisa, Stardust, The Very Thought of You, Nature Boy (Johnny Mathis also had a hit with this), and Almost Like Being in Love. In the middle of the summer she told me if anything were to happen to her that she lived a good life and to be happy. I lost her on December 1st and we had her funeral on December 7th. I had a speech that mentioned this and I have the funeral home play it during her service. I didn't even know if I could listen to it just now. The most devastating loss of my life. Although I know she wants me to smile it's so hard. I truly feel it's crazy as I'm sitting here missing her and going back to any videos I missed, which I obviously did. This was there and I take it as a sign from her. ❤️

    "Sweet" is the perfect word for many of these songs from the 50s and 60s. It's their open and unabashed sweetness that touches your heart every time. It's the sweetness with which you wish someone would speak to you with, it's the sweetness that you wish you could speak to someone with. It's the sweetness that often lacks in our world today and I think it's important for young people, boys especially, to hear this sweetness coming from a grown man because a real man is not afraid to be sweet, vulnerable, caring, and gentle.

    Here's some facts about this song: it originally appeared at the end of Charlie Chaplin's 1935 film Modern Times, which Charlie wrote and composed. Many years later lyrics were added. As well as being a big Charlie Chaplin fan, this was also Michael Jackson's favourite song. He did an amazing cover of it, which I highly recommend, on his 1995 album HIStory (my favourite album). Also Michael's brother Jermaine sang a cover and dedicated it to his baby brother at Michael's public memorial. Speaking of Michael Jackson, please react to some (if not all ;) ) of the Christmas songs by the Jackson 5 which I think is the best Christmas album ever. It's definitely my favourite

    As soon as the song started, I had a weird reaction: instead of smiling, I wept. My dad used to play a lot of Nat King Cole when I was growing up in the '60's, and it immediately brought me back to that time. My dad died while I was a teenager, so I have a lot of nostalgia about the music he liked the most. Now that I got that out of my system, I'll smile, lol.

    If you want Christmas music . The #1 Christmas crooner of the 60s was Andy Williams . He had Nat King Cole on his TV show and had to fight the network to do it . If you want to listen to crooners try Andy Williams .

    Nat Cole was the best crooner of his era; there was no one like him. His secret, other than mad musical and vocal talent, was that he never rushed, but took all the time needed to fully express the contents of the song. Many of his recordings suffered from treacly overproduction resulting in that "Disney" type sound but his gifts usually overcame this shortcoming.

      I loved the dramatic touches of the music in his songs. That was the classic style of the day and the instrumentations made the songs even more special. Coke was so good that the music never took over his voice.

    I love you guys! I'm an older guy and I lived during the height of Nat King Cole's career. Without question he is one of my all time favorites! Ironically he started out as a piano player and one night he was asked to sing a little and, of course, the rest is history!!!!!
    I know this video is about Nat King Cole, but, PLEASE FORGIVE ME, I must ask you to listen to another version of this song. I know you guys have listened to Angelina Jordan and you enjoy her very much. She sang 'Smile' during a documentary that was done celebrating the life of a fellow Norwegian gentleman and the song (being sung by Angelina) is the backdrop in the video but you will hear enough of it to, well, just listen and find out what I mean. I think if you go to Angelina Jordan/Smile/Documentary that should get you right there. In fact, I'm going there right now. I know Nat would love Angelina's version.

But Please do “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year by Andy Williams You will instantly recognize it because it gets lots of play at Christmas time. And don’t forget White Christmas by Bing Crosby. Something that would be super fun would be to get your girls to react to “The Grinch” and Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I just read a touching story about how the story of Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer came about Check it out

You should react to his daughter's songs too, NATALIE COLE. She looked a lot like her Dad and had a beautiful voice. She was born in 1950, 3 years after I was born.
