How did he unlock the expert mode without beating all the bosses before? I'm confused

A glitch. He unlocked dlc expert mode which allowed him to prematurely select expert on main game bosses even though normally dlc and main game expert are supposed to be separate. Hope that made sense
If you pause on the difficulty selector he does for main game bosses you can see a red box to the left, thats the glitch
