Dollar General has turned into a series of small grocery stores that are placed in areas without a grocery store nearby. I will say that their refrigerated drinks are cheaper than gas stations, so if you're on a road trip and want a bottle of Coke/Gatorate, or a canned energy drink, Dollar Generals are the move

There's been reports on Dollar Stores and Family Dollars. They move into low-income neighborhoods and force out actual grocery stores and sources of quality food/produce so that the dollar store becomes people's main source of shopping for everything. Sort of like a super-budget Walmart. They sell the bare minimum of food (frozen meals, canned food) but not quality options. You can look it up, NPR has done podcasts on it as well.

I work for a company that produces products for dollar stores. We sell 3pk razors and the store buys them from us for say .50c each and sells them for $1. No it does not pay the rent but many of these stores have other items well over a dollar. The tactic the retailers employ is that they want the consumer to put at least 27* (*it depends on the retailer and their location) items in their basket on each visit. The $1 items are considered add-on or incentives to help get the value of the basket over a certain figure that they determine is the average spend needed to make profit. Also the larger retailers like dollar tree make the vendors help pay for certain costs (e.g. setting up new items in stores). Hope this helps :)

When I worked at dollar tree, the amount of people who came in with designer bags is astronomical😂😂 It somehow doesn’t make sense, but does at the same time. Also, Dollar Tree rarely sponsors youtubers because there are already so many of them making videos for free. The store manages to keep prices low because theoretically, for example, hour standard pack of TicTacs can go for more at Target, but they know when you come into the store, you’re going to buy other random crap too. Increased demand out of convenience = increased profit

Dollar Stores are actually more expensive since they sell things in smaller quantities/sizes. So that smaller roll of foil may seem like a good deal for just a dollar but if you were compare the unit cost vs. a standard size at any other store, it’s actually more expensive.
Dollar Tree is my favorite store. There are so many cool things that you can get and I love just looking around at everything and then getting a 2.75L bottle of rootbeer and candy.

Years ago I would comparison shop between Target, Walgreens, the grocery store and the dollar store - the dollar store would actually be more expensive for actual household needs as the size of items were very small/low fluid ounces, etc. It was nice to shop there with the kids to pick out a something special for a prize at the end of a good week or something.
I get a ton of arts and crafts stuff for my kids at the dollar store, or celebrating anniversary, valentines, bdays etc - can get a nice party kit for less then $10 that makes everyone happy

The dollar tree is where everything’s a dollar, other “dollar stores” are different. Im really surprised out of all people graham doesn’t shop there. Probably more than half the items are useless junk that break but its great for things like, toothpaste, dish/hand soap, foil and things to organize your house.
For the batteries they usually use cheaper types of batteries that last less time. Razors literally cost pennies to make (most the cost is marketing) and for the aluminum foil we get a better deal by buying the 10$ bulk roll from the grocery store (lasted almost a year)
Dollar Stores have special contracts with the suppliers where they can purchase products at a cheaper price. For example Campbell makes a soup can like 1oz less and so Dollar tree and dollar general can purchase it much cheaper than target or walmart
Always saved the light sticks but when you wanted to use them they didn’t work any more, goes to show you that it’s not all about saving but sometimes we got to enjoy what we have because the future is not a promise .

Back when they first introduced it like 15 years ago it actually was a dollar. I didn't go to Target for a few years and when I returned and saw the new "Dollar Spot" I felt so betrayed.
also because he mentioned it, the dollar store usually buys overstocked goods (for the name brand stuff) and that's why they get it really cheap, and also the stuff that isn't like "branded" not paying for the brand saves a lot of money. Most stores get the same or similar stuff for the same price or only a little more than the dollar store (like say $0.50 an item) but they mark it up like a few hundred percent, while the dollar store only marks it up to a dollar. And they usually aren't in convenient locations which saves them on rent, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I could literally go on for an hour lol.

Graham they buy a lot of their items directly from factories or from when other stores go out of business. So they can sell them at under a dollar

Back when they first introduced it like 15 years ago it actually was a dollar. I didn't go to Target for a few years and when I returned and saw the new "Dollar Spot" I felt so betrayed.
also because he mentioned it, the dollar store usually buys overstocked goods (for the name brand stuff) and that's why they get it really cheap, and also the stuff that isn't like "branded" not paying for the brand saves a lot of money. Most stores get the same or similar stuff for the same price or only a little more than the dollar store (like say $0.50 an item) but they mark it up like a few hundred percent, while the dollar store only marks it up to a dollar. And they usually aren't in convenient locations which saves them on rent, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I could literally go on for an hour lol.
