Absolutely you should restore the manure spreader this winter!! Strip it down completely, replace any wood that needs replacing, scrub down and renovate any wood that can be saved. Clean all the metal parts, protect them from rust because this thing will live out in the weather, and grease it up good. Tighten things where you can or should and put her all back together and let her shine!!

Clean it up at end of fall, add hay bales to haul hunters to recover there venison harvest. You have the grass, sell live animal shares with a hunting lease. Coolers get filled after am hunt and b4 pm hunts. Coolers get filled, venison sausage made is a bonus. Same for pork and chicken. Without Ken, find general contractors to barter hunting leases for the mini house cabins and your retirement house. Use it to learn what areas need to be upgraded, repaired, restored and replaced. Do the restoration but have it ready for spring fertilizing. It will never leave the farm and you get a new paint and rust removal system.

Then a hay swather, crimper, sickel bar mowing and a hay rake. Also a round baler with wrapper. But first the sawmill to clear more pasture, make your own building materials. The work has the pastures and wildlife thriving. Add a sweetcorn food plot. Libby would make bank, hunters very happy and hopefully keep pressure off the hidden garden.

The big question for a restoration is... Do you change out the jackstand to a modern design?

    • @clarencewiles963

The spreader is a good one. I see that it was pulled by horse so you’re going to pull faster than walking speed. You will need to do a wash out keeping it clean so it can dry better between use. Who ever had it before did a great job and they parked it inside because snow will ruin it over winter ❄️

@marktupper5789- I agree. The spreader we have works great. Our working farm is a testimony to my father-in-law and his parents. We are 3rd generation. The farm looks like 1940 revisited with a 1940 panel truck in the dairy barn and all the old equipment in use. The New Holland tractor breaks down more! Only challenge is finding parts for some of the haying equipment. ~ Diane

I agree! Restore necessary things like the tires and maybe the rotted wood boards. Do a fine tooth comb on the mechanics and where you need to oil and such. But it’s so cool that it’s original and it’s still working after all of these years.

Good morning Al, your new spreader should serve you well for years to come. The big chain that rides across the spreader floor that takes the manure to the beaters is called the apron chain. You should be on the lookout for an apron chain tool, some day you will need it. One correction in your lever description, it is the beaters that have only one speed and the apron chain that has multiple settings. That allows you to have a constant drive speed but vary how thick or thin you want to spread the manure. I have a John Deere spreader that needed new tires. I was able to use used semi truck tires. At that time I had the rims sandblasted and I painted them with implement paint. Save your used motor oil and brush it on the inside of the wood each time you use it. Nice purchase, worth rewooding it.

Would suggest you contact Pete at Just a Few Acres. He restores and uses older tractors and restored a similar manure spreader last year. Their farm near Ithaca New York has about 30 Dexter beef cattle. Highly recommend him as a homesteader farm source of information and guidance on pasture development, beef marketing, farm life skills, etc. He is on TH-cam. I have been following him for about 3 years. I think you have a lot in common with!

Since you asked... about the manure spreader - I'd want to make sure it works well for what you intend to use it for. It's design is a bit different... and you need to know if it's going to work for you. So I'd use it NOW... and if it serves the purpose, THEN I'd restore it without going crazy with it... you know? You may even be able to improve on the design a bit once you see how it works... as you are ALWAYS improving on stuff there. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Good morning Lumnah family from a cloudy but bright Minnesota. Good morning viewers. I'm so glad my prediction did not come true! I was so worried. I'm glad you found a manure spreader for the farm. I like the winning names for the piglets! Brutus is such a great dog. Myles looks happy eating his treats. That's neat that you're trying to make your own hamburger buns. That is interesting that they have a potato in them. Nice that you have the gate netting to train the piglets to the electric netting. It's also great that you will train them to electric runs of wire too! I like your fiberglass fence posts for the electric wire fence. I'm glad that Yukon and Sweet Potato are the sweetest and gentlest of the IPP piglets you have and they are your breeding pair. I like how your buns turned out Gina! Too bad the second test showed that Azalea wasn't pregnant. I like your manure spreader. That is an interesting jack that it has. We have a spreader like that in the woods next to our house. All the wood has rotted off but all the chains and gears are still there. It doesn't have the big paddles like you have that should fling the manure well. I have no idea what those cost but I think because it still has the wood it must be worth more than that one in our woods and the owner still keeps his. I'm thinking you did well. Thanks for this video Lumnah family!

Al...I vote for a complete rebuild this winter! It is obviously well engineered(even if unique in design) and completely photographing the speader prior to start of work will be invaluable to you as you separate the wood from the metal, and the metal from rubber, get metal parts lightly sandblasted, primed and repainted, and cut/order new hard wood for the worn pieces and treat with modern wood protectant for a rebuild that will last your lifetime, imho! Tell Gena that her potato bread rolls looked delish!, please! Glad the piggies are learnin' their limits without too much squealin'! The last critters raised by any farmers in the family, were durocs raised up and sold to Swift Packing when they had an huge old packing plant in South Georgia, To hear piglets squealing is as natural to my ears as birdsong to others! Your 12A spreader was built during the time when farmer's only had trip bucket loaders. So they would load the spreader with manure and then they would hook the loader tractor to the spreader because they only had one tractor. That is why the stand is built the way it is. The left hand lever lowers the chain over the sprocket on the left wheel which operates the two beater bars and the wide spread. While the right lever works the racket for the apron. So always make sure that you put the lefthand lever be fore moving the spreader because the right lever will move the load back into the beaters jam the manure into the beaters to the point that you can slide the wheels on the ground. And if you try to spread manure while the ground is frozen you might find that the wheels may slide and not turn. I've seen farmers put chains on the spreaders so they bite into the ground early in the spring and winter time. Tom.

I can not wait to watch the video series on restoring this beauty. Looks like a good deal. I see them for north of $1k, and yours looks better.

I think the spreader is a great candidate for a restoration project. Although you’re pretty busy year round, the shop building will be a great place to discombobulate and reassemble just about anything.
Gina, those hamburger buns look yummy. The texture looks a lot like English muffins.

Definitely restore... replace bad wood, sandblast metal and paint if possible. Used one of those on my grandpas farm 50+ years ago. Love it.

Restore it this winter. Keep as much of the wood as you can and redo the new idea that’s faded. That was a good deal

I vote to that you replace the damaged wood, paint the metal but keep the original lettering, maybe dry the wood sides and spray on some linseed oil.

The spreader is a great addition to the farm. I think you should use it as is and refurbish it over the winter. I would enjoy seeing you make it look like new. 👍👍 Show more animals as much as you can. Brutus is a joy and he is a smart boy. 🥰♥️

Hi Al! Wow, what a piece of farm history you scored with the manure spreader. Being a farm kid myself, I love older farm implements. Well done! 🙌🏼
