Right, that sounded absolutely amazing to me.
In my campaign we had one of our absolute best arcs when one of my players stupidly started a fight with a city guard who was denying them access to the city, this caused me to need to react and have them call backup. The fight lasted long enough for reinforcements to arrive and after the guards successfully capture one of the players, the players then realize they need to retreat. They go to the outskirts in the forest where I have them meet a traveling entertainment troup which they were able to lie to and sneak into the city with. Then the party needed to find where their friend was being held, how to free them, and still meet the king because this was meant to be a DIPLOMACY MISSION.
This whole arc involved brothels, a gladiator arena with multiple challenges and varied games, a players old retired mercenary uncle who now had political pull, prior NPCs, new interesting NPCs with a tragic tale mirroring one of my players, and so much more that I did not have planned originally. This all took about 5 sessions to accomplish (roughly 4-5 hour sessions) and I was able to incorporate about 3 of my players backstories into it when it originally was only planned for 1 and this city to only take about 2 hours to complete.
As a DM you really just need to roll with it and realize that sometimes the collaborative story you all make together is more fun and memorable than the one you had planned.

When I started my oldest still running campaign back in '94 I introduces a blackhaired female wizard apprentice, originally ment to drop some clues and get the party going. Unfortunately I called her Nevra Truthteller (because she hat a ring of truth, which allowed her to detect lies but would prevent her from telling lies). As soon as I dropped the name my players went "okay, she's a liar!" and "Nevra.. that's an anagram of raven - I don't trust her.". Needless to say the original plan with Nevra as informant backfired spectacularly... but I ran with it... she coerced one of the dumper characters to give the tome it was all about and left them fighting a siege of orcs. She became a recurring character with a somewhat shady reputation. One half ot the players want to kill her on sight, the others like her lone wolf style. You never know what the players construct out of a given information... and it is a lot of fun to roll with it...

    The Miller Incident
it's cool when DMs allow creative use of real physics.
I once built what was deemed the "fighter's fireball" which was a pressurized flask of fine bread flour and a clockwork sparker (like the flintlock mechanism of a rifle)
The idea was you throw it and when it bursts it throws a big cloud of flour into the air that ignites (if you don't know, working in a flour mill used to be incredibly dangerous because the flour particles suspended in the air were highly flammable)
It had half the radius of a magic fireball (and a range limited by throwing capability ) but the same damage potential.

The winners are predetermined in wrestling, but the injuries are VERY real. My husband used to wrestle in a promotion run by Sika Anoa'i. We actually have a chair that he was hit in the head with. It is not usable anymore. As for the DM, that was a VERY BIG overreaction. They were having fun. When I was younger, I used to wrestle competitively. Collegiate style. Never really got into TV wrestling. I've been playing and DMing for 40+ years. If we ever had a player or DM behave like that, our whole group would be like "Don't let the door hit you on the backside on the way out". The only question would be "OK guys, who's DMing next week". If he was that much of an a$$, there had to be other signs that things were going to go south.

That first story reminds me of something from Darths & Droids. (For any who aren't familiar, it's a webcomic where Star Wars never existed as movies; the story only exists as a campaign that a D&D group are playing. It's funny, and I recommend checking it out.)
In The Phantom Menace, there is a minor character named Sio Bibble. He has maybe four scenes in the movie --- his most famous line is the recording he sends to Queen Amidala's ship: "The death toll is catastrophic. We must bow to their wishes. You must contact me!" After that movie, that character is never heard from again.
Well, in Darths & Droids, Sio Bibble is an equally minor character, but one of the players, Jim, fixates on Sio Bibble, and continually accuses him of being the one behind all kinds of evil. Even by the time the group is playing through Episode VII: The Force Awakens, the group has been playing their game for years, and everyone else has forgotten about that character, Jim STILL accuses Sio Bibble of being the mastermind of new plots. That's become my second-favourite running joke in the series.

I've had something happen in both of my games that relate to both stories, which is just fun. I introduced a 'Tinkering Goblin' that would mess with weapons, armor, items, etc. One of my groups pretty much were like, 'You wanna come work with us?' Then after about a 10 minute discussion they recruited the Goblin and pretty much told me they REALLY loved the Goblin, so I kidnapped the Goblin in the next 2 sessions as any good DM would do. They almost have him back though! Just helped add A LOT of tension to the main plot hook for me and for them.
My other group was moving from one major plot point to the second major plot point. It was one of the points I allow my players to 'swap characters' because it just makes sense where they are in the storyline. Our Cleric wanted to play a Halfling Monk that was a grappler and his name was 'Johnny Wrestling'. I loved the concept and thought it was funny, quirky and would fit into the super serious world and setting. He introduces his new character and describes what he looks like and then he goes to talk and begins talking like Macho Man Randy Savage and I just lost it laughing. I was laughing for about 5 minutes straight because I just wasn't expecting it.
Moral of the story - Let your players have fun and fall in love with their characters and other stupid things in your world. It just makes the game better for them and ultimately for you by doing so!

"Professional Wrestling" is basically a soap opera with punching.
What exactly did the DM think the Professional Prize Fighter character would be based on?
Especially such an obviously eccentric one?
In theory, a prize fighter character in a fantasy setting could just be "a gladiator" or "a boxer".
But with the amount of showboating this particular character was doing all the time, there really isn't any kind of athletes other than wrestlers that could possibly be the inspiration.

    • @LamanKnight
      @LamanKnight หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Actually, from what I hear, gladiators basically WERE the pro wrestlers of ancient Rome. Some gladitorial weapons were not very practical. Apparently, some of the fights were staged and predetermined. And you wouldn't want a gladiator to get killed for no reason, for the same reason you wouldn't want a pro wrestler to get injured: The audience want to see their favourites, so each fighter is a valuable asset that you want to protect. (*To be clear, I've heard that sometimes even the professionals did die in gladitorial battles, but it was supposed to be agreed upon in advance, "In this match, death is a possibility.")
It's sometimes almost weird to see how similar to us ancient people are. Gladiators, ancient Olypmic athletes, knights in tournaments, WWE wrestlers, and TTRPG players have between them a lot of showboating and "fake" fighting that people just find fun. Human nature apparently hasn't changed much over the ages.
Yeah, so I don't understand that DM's reaction at all.

I loved the last story! As a DM I don't always catch the proper physical and chemical interactions I should but I appreciate when others do. My favorite personal instance hapoened when I had the party in a train car fighting several assassins. It was the wizard's turn, a bladesinger, and I expected him to run into melee as usual. He noticed that with a small amount of movement he could create a line with 3 assassins and no allies. Without hesitation he shouted that he would jump on the nearby seat and cast lighting bolt! The line ended at a wall of the entirely metal train car they were in. He was the only one standing on a seat (not metal) while the others stood on the floor of the car. After a simple "are you sure?" from me he nodded. I proceeded to have the assassins role reflex saves and everyone but him, including allies, roll CON saves. As soon as I said it everyone's faces dropped as they realized it was because they had all just been electrocuted... needless to say it was a hilarious moment that all of the other characters gave the wizard a hard time about for the rest of the campaing. No character died (I wouldn't have let that happen from something silly like this) but it was memorable.

With the conspiracy theory one. Corporations rebrand all the time. Have your villains rebranded themselves and do a whole soul searching we realized we were the bad guys but now we're changing kind of story. Then just leave it simmering. They can get a redemption campaign later or they can be the BBEG of their own campaign later but either way it allows it to be pushed to the background and if the players keep pushing it then they turn into the villains. If they do that then you may obliterate them 🤣🤣🤣
*Also ; I too detest professional wrestling. But I'm old enough to remember when they tried to make us believe it was real so we felt betrayed and lied to as a generation frankly . But with the wisdom of age I've come to realize that the fighting itself may be fake but at the end of the day that's some pretty metal ballet they're doing out there so I can at least respect that.

Funnily enough, it was because I replaced him with another character. I thought he fought with the goodie-two-shoes paladin too much, and wanted a character whose story could play in the background. The reason I was booted: the gm (who did not want to boot me) told me that the other players thought I was trying to be the main character (I was trying to do the opposite) and that my character did what they did but better. Relating to story 1, the story started on a small mining island that had a few farms to be self-sufficient. Just to get the group together, I had a simple event of the local chickens having escaped their coop, and the individial party members happened to be nearby and assisted in capturing the chickens and return them. One of the chickens made over a dozen successful rolls against being grappled, and I jokingly said they noticed this wasn't your average chicken just to make fun of the fact it kept escaping grapples. Long story short the players latched on to this and 50 sessions later the chicken, who was meant to be nothing more than a 5 minute session 1 mission to capture, was revealed to be the familiar of an ancient hero waiting for his master's prophesied return to face a recuring ancient evil. The table loved it, and I was so happy with this randomly coming into existence.

I will preface this that I think the DM who got so butthurt over the wrestling inspiration is being extremely stupid
However I'm pretty sure he's one of those DMs that's overly precious about his setting and with him disliking wrestling he probably didn't like the idea of a WWE style/themed wrestler existing in his homebrew world. First thing you got to do as a DM is realize that you're building your world with the players and that you can't treat it like some fragile treasure.

WHAT?!?! Wife introduced Duke to D&D?? So we have wife to thank for all of this? All of the humour? All of the clips, and videos, and characters, and ad-barian, and everything?? Omg, wife, you rule.
About that creative use of flour: I love that idea of revealing what is hidden by throwing some flour around. However, flour on itself is not flammable. In fact, you can use flour to put out fires. If you lob a bag inside a room with baddies, the flour is gonna clump together and possibly even kill the fireplace fire. If it's covering the baddies, I'm sure they'll be coughing, but not being immolated. In order for flour to burn, it needs to be a very fine mist and all floating in the air. Taking some flour in your mouth and blowing it out with a lot of force, so it disperses in the air, could do it. Of course, having a windmill situation where the flour is being worked so the air basically is flour, could definitely do it. Create a heavy explosion in the process. Or having a fine powder that doesn't clump together (that easily), like powdered milk, could do it. Try it, next time you have a campfire or a barbeque. Throw a handful of powdered milk on the hot coals, or fire, and create your own incredible fireball. Watch out for your eyebrows. Throw a handful of flour on the fire and watch it sizzle and create dark spots where it lands on the coals.
I'm not sure what the Cloudkill adds in this scenario, but perhaps some prestidigitation could billow through the flour enough to fill the air with an explosive mixture.
    Please don't fire Jakin. ;-)

I've had an experience that's somewhere between both of these stories. My current character is a grapple build, who loves hyping people up and fighting for the thrill and glory. My friends love to make wrestling comparisons, but I haven’t watched wrestling since the 90's, so most of the references go over my head. I still play the character, and have leaned into the Pro Wrestler memes a bit, because everyone else enjoys them so much. It's funny that my character has inspired some of the other party members to look into wrestling as a hobby or a way to blow off steam outside of combat.
I based her fighting style not on a wrestler, but on Godzilla. Big, heavy punches, sweeps with the tail, and fire breath are her main moves, with her main gimmick being to suplex an enemy (grapple and knock them prone) to pin them and let the melee strikers get free advantage. I guess she'd be close to a Giant-type wrestler?

Well, the dwarf in the party fell in love with the old woman that offered them refuge. 9 sessions later and the dwarf is now king of the mountain and the old lady Mary's him but then us revealed to have been a DOPPELGANGER WORKING FOR THE BBEG FOR 90% OF THE TIME SHE WAS IN THE CAMPAIGN. Needless to say I made the dwarf king (character, NOT actual player) cry.

Regarding that second story, I feel like that DM was maybe projecting a little. While he may have been fine with a character who was sort of a wrestler, but when he realized that OP's character as highly derivative of a pro wrestler (or three), he probably got bent out of shape over that. I bring this up because the rest of the players figure out that the DM's plot is derivative of Final Fantasy X. Basic hypocrisy. HE could be derivative (maybe because he thought he was being smart about it), but how dare his players be as derivative! That kind of thing.
Honestly, there is nothing wrong with having a derivative character. Not only is it good for new players, but it's fine to just keep things simple and enjoy the game. Not every campaign has to be Lord of the Rings or Dragonlance level, with robust, complex characters. I'm not a fan of pro wrestling myself, but if a player wants to basically be one for his character, I'll roll with it. He's having fun, and I see no need to ruin that.

Turned out it was a main faction of my campaign and the players almost didnt make it out from the warehouse, fast forward 2 years later and in the new campaign set a hundred years earlier than that campaign and the players encounter Larry again who at this point is a half-ghoul turning into a full ghoul and my players loved seeing him again despite the near death experience

Getting upset because wrestling is "fake" is like getting upset because theater plays are "fake". As far as I know, both are staged, coreographed and pretend to be real. Why do some people get so upset at one and not the other?
Now, getting upset not because someone likes wrestling, but because they made a character based on wrestlers? That's plain stupid and childish. I could understand it if they based their character on a real murderer or on Hitler or something, but this is like getting upset because they based their character on Jack Sparrow and "oh, but Pirates of the Caribbean is fake".

Breaking news to the DM that left for a charachter based on a wrestler: you are not a real DM.
Kind of what she said: it's a story. Matches tell story, that are played by characters (wrestlers) to reacch one specific goal (the main quest of the campaign).
Professional wrestling it''s like roleplaying, you have the good guy and the bad guy, you have the party (stables or crews) and all toghethger you just have fun entertain the people.
I just ut my head to work because my next character will be an Unarmed Strike Brawler...it's going to be a wrestler, so to say. I'm just thinking at the build and background, but it's basically a wrestler...
one other thing: in 2017 WWE organized a D&D campaign basically over Critical Role success. In the players there was Xavier Woods, Ember Moon (now known as Athena in ROH) and Brennan Williams, who was in future known as Dio Maddin in the RAW commentary boot and MACE/ma.ce during the Retribution/Maximum Male Models era

First one: whatever the players latch to becomes the focus. It's not up to me what they enjoy, it's up to me to incorporate as much of that as possible.
When i can't just improv it in, I've definitely told players "I didnt expect that to become so resonant. I'll prepapre a full line for it, but for now, what else would you like to focus on?"
Second one: if you didnt catch it at creation, it's way too late to be upset. But that aside, who cares where they were inspired? Whatever gets them into the game is great!
Also, If you wanna play a specific plot, its helpful to tell the players youre doing that or at least set parameters for creation. Plus pro fighter isn't like... a stretch for the world of final fantasy
I can't think of any genre I would disqualify as inspiration, that's just bananas.
Red baron is also my favorite frozen pizza😂

    Story:
My players are at the bottom of an ocean, using bubbles around their heads created by the Aqua fae of the land to help them breathe. They walk into the large vast city of water, and quickly acknowledge the issue, large fish-like creatures taming through walls and harassing civilians. Their quest was to end them all.
They began by killing off a few at a time, but the creatures overcame them. They retreated into a cave where they heard a loud grumble, this was the place of the fish queen.
Their first move was to use their pet cat named Tom. He was a magical being who was invincible, and also doubled as a bag of holding. Ari, a rouge, WENT IN TOMS MOUTH, as the group threw Tom at the giant fish. Ari rolled for wisdom, and rolled a nat 20, leading her directly to the fishes heart. She used the explosives she had collected a few towns back and threw them out of Tom’s mouth. The fish took immediate damage. Meanwhile the rest of the group was doing worthless damage on the outside.
They watched as the fish slowly exploded from the inside and out , and as Tom flew out of the flames. He softly landed on all fours, before letting out a soft “meow” before puking out Ari.
    My players are very interesting.
