I'm trying out a new form of content on this channel, that being an X-Men based comic book podcast, so please let me know if this is something you enjoy and you'd like to see more of this or more similar content on the channel in addition to my omnibus overviews, statue overviews, and haul videos!
In this episode, I share with you my favorite X-Men character - the one and only, Emma Frost! We'll take a look at her origin, her family history, her ideologies, her mutations, her moments of trauma and heroism, and much more!

A long time ago, I used to be an Emma hater back when I was a Jean stan. 😂
However, Emma is easily in my top 5 comics characters of all time now.

Ha, I was basically the opposite but I've since learned to love them and appreciate them individually and together. Two great characters, no complaints here!

She’s so great - and I made this about a year or so ago before I read a ton of other great stories including her character. When I got into the online side of X-Men stuff I was thrilled to see that there’s actually a decent amount of big Emma Frost fans…well deserved!

Personally, Emma Frost is my favourite. Especially with the Marauders and newer stuff.
Frankly, with the movies trying and failing to do dark Pheonix, I just think “can we focus on Storm or skip to Emma please?”
I would recommend the podcast Cerebro if you want to brush up on structure.
I was also drawn to her. In the shows, she was the most mature and grown-up, if you know what I mean. This is an excellent contrast to the usual group.
Emma Frost is a very well written character. Especially see her run in New X-Men and Astonishing X-Men and post-2018-ish?

OMG my introduction to Emma was Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon and the New X-Men run simultaneously, at first I didn't like her cause I was am a huge Jean fan, especially shipping Jean and Scott.......BUT she's grown on me since and now is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE Mutant Superhero!!!!!! #StrifeToBeLikeEmmaEveryday

Haha, I was the opposite. I loved Emma first and wasn’t too fond of Jean but she really grew on me and I realized I didn’t need to be pitting two amazing characters against each other!

Oh, man. Me too! She's got to be in my top five favorite characters. I'm planning out the next episode with a friend now (but he's still trying to decide who his favorite is lol - it's hard though, there's a ton of greats).

One aspect of Emma I love that often gets forgotten is that on top of everything, she is a tech genius. She created a computer to enhance her telepathy that went toe-to-toe with cerebro; and a ray that switched her mind with Storm!
Grant Morrison’s run was my first ever introduction to Em and I loved it! Loooove Spice and Em as a family! The Cuckoos are my second favorites

She's my favorite, earned every ounce of her power and utilizes it so well that she rivals Professor X despite having less raw power than him
Absolutely, she’s got a really unique style of intelligence that when mixed with her power makes her a real big league player. I love how far she’s come in the X-Men books since her inception.

@@OmnibusRyan yeah despite being poorly written by men who have ZERO idea how to write a femme character who's not an pearl-clutching ingenue, trauma pron subject, sex mommy villain, or a pseudo-moralistic WMD (Jean, Storm... lookin at you!)
She's my favorite though, so many of the characters are two dimensional but she's actually 3 dimensional even with bad writing at times (everyone who goes any of the above route... or the self-descruned nice guy fantasy NLOG girl... petty, bratty hypersexual, unreasonably jealous, DEEPLY-internalized-misogyny route)
She's like Irene Adler that way, except actually not a good guy at times (canonically Irene is a better guy than Sherlock) and Emma is a genuinely flawed person, but she comes by those flaws honestly and eventually owns them and tries to do her best to correct for them and not just make empty apologies.
Imo, based on how she is no matter who writes her... She isn't just out for herself (though she learns into that perception HARD, why give her enemy ammo?) She wants to protect her students, fellow mutants, and even humans to a far lesser degree.
She could have gone for much more damaging solutions that would have been more effective than Magneto's had she just wanted to be a supremacist like him, or eliminated rogue mutants far more effectively than Prof X and tried to sanitize the image of mutants like he did... Instead she just has a much better route
She doesn't put ideology ahead of lives, or the quality of those lives.
Because Ideals can be changed, they can also be destroyed! And their destruction usually ends in the former heroes lashing out in big ways that harm way more people!
She only seeks to reduce or eliminate the causes of harm to mutant kind first and humanity second. Starting with protecting the people around her, especially the children she is responsible and loves so much.
EVERYTHING she does is about that, and only about that. Even her own wants and agenda is subsumed when it conflicts with that.
She is pragmatic, focused, efficient!
(None of which are emphasized cause they're not "sexy" traits, but are a north star for her character and even the worst writers usually can't fuck that up.)
She literally saved the entirety of mutant kind by basically manipulating the heroes and the villains into her plan!
And it worked!
It was dirty, unpleasant, unethical in many ways... But looking at the options, it was the most accessible, and did the least harm.
She doesn't do the easy way, the hard way, the good or the bad way... She does what is needed by whatever means necessary WITH the least overall harm. She's the midpoint between Magneto and Prof X... and still exceeds both in terms of results!
Edit: Oh, and unlike them... She can admit when she's wrong.

she is very cool interesting and complex but I do like her more on the villainous side she is just so good at being bad....kind like how I love dr doom but wouldn't want him to be a good guy although he has done things for the greater good on ocassion ofc.

I recently watched the FX series LEGION and fell in love with the character. I kind of did a deep dive on the character as best I could through you tube videos, but it'd be rad to hear someone else who loves him and actually has read all of his stuff.
Funny that you say that, actually. Legion is going to be the focus character for the next guest I’ve got lined up. Just reading the materials they recommended now!

If Scott and Emma stay together and Logan and Jean stay together, wouldn't that be interesting? I like it.
I think there could be interesting storytelling potential. But comic continuity and editorial is always going to bring Scott and Jean back together imo. I really don’t mind, though.

It’s funny, I used to not be too interested in him but I actually really like him now. It took some time for him to grow on me but he’s definitely such a core member of every iteration of the team.

As an Emma Frost fan I'm sure you would understand this: but I would like to see something on my favourite Marvel character the character Marvel created to be nothing but a plot point but accidentally created a potential Omega level Mutant, Emma's brother:
Christian Frost.
Yeah, he’s for sure an interesting case. Seems like now a days they trot him out for a brief panel or two and then put him back in the box. Would enjoy seeing somebody do more with him on Krakoa!
@@OmnibusRyan They have just used him as a minority card and plot point for Emma's and Iceman's stories. Which is sad for a character with a lot to say. Also they gave him powers that could make him Omega level but they haven't bothered to look into him, he absorbs the energy that gives telepaths their powers, the energy that the Phoenix Force is made of. So many ways those powers could be used.
Kitty is my favorite but Emma is not too far behind great video 👌
Thank you for watching! Yeah, Kitty is a close second or third for me. She also benefits from having joined the X-Men at such a young age that it’s been this badass coming of age story of hers that has spanned decades. Amazing for us as the audience to see her grow. Love her in Excalibur too!
How much money did you spend on the original comics those go high
On Emma’s first appearance? I believe at the time I bought it that it was a 7.0 for about $250. Prices have definitely gone up since 2021, though!

@@OmnibusRyan Not really, I read the Outback Era stories when they were new.
I do like the new relationship dynamic between Emma and Kitty. I'd argue it's even outright romantic at times and I honestly hope it eventually goes down that road in full. They'd make a very interesting couple and besides, Marvel still needs to do a response to the Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy romance anyway. Although there are also plenty of hints that Emma's still in love with Cyclops... and might even still be sleeping with him on occasion. She should really just move on from him already.
As for the Krakoa storyline as a whole, it's certainly going to some interesting places, though it's also seems like Mutantkind is slowly going into the opposite extreme and becoming the oppressors. That in itself isn't the problem though. The problem is that not one main X-Men character, especially after the whole big Planet-Sized X-Men thing, is going like: "Uh... guys, are we sure we're going in the right direction here? Maybe we're going too far?" The fact that almost everyone still seems pretty unconditionally supportive of all this really irks me.
Emma and Kitty getting into a legit relationship would be like the opus magnum of the enemies to lovers trope and I'm here for it. That being said, I am a really big fan of the potential for Kitty and Illyana to have a romantic relationship and would find that probably a bit more satisfying because of their foundational friendship and shared traumas.
On to your second point with Krakoa, I am reserving judgement a bit because I have a feeling when all is said and done with it that's kind of going to be the revelation and they may open up borders to others or something like that. I will say, I did enjoy in Inferno (SPOILER IF YOU HAVENT READ IT YET) Professor Xavier made a brief comment to Moira that was like "have we ever tried to make peace with the machines" which was immediately shot down by Moira but it seemed way more in line with the original ideological thought process of him and I hope we start to get them questioning the nation and Moira's behind the shadows leadership a bit more. It's truly a fascinating time in X-history! Thanks for watching btw!
@@OmnibusRyan I hear you, but to paraphrase what Magik herself said right before Kitty's almost wedding to Colossus, if it was going to happen "it would have happened by now." Same thing with Rachel. Kitty's been BFFs with both of them for so long that I just don't know if it would feel right for things to get romantic. Just my opinion though.
@@starturtle5135 Oh, interesting. I'm slowly working my way through X-Men and have not gotten to some of the more modern stuff like that yet (aside from Krakoa stuff) so looking forward to seeing how all that plays out!

I really like Cyclops - this video is three years old and from when I basically just started reading X-Men. I’ve got an updated video 😉.
A bag of rocks is a more compelling and interesting character than Jean.

I will say, I was big fan of "Screw you all, I am a cosmic god" Jean during Morrison's run. Probably my favorite version of Jean I've read so far.
@@OmnibusRyan Jean fans are just feeble minded fools upon which she used her telepathy to trick into thinking she was anything other than the bloody awful character from the day she was created.
I hate Emma so much! She was a great villain back in Hellfire days and was good as morally ambiguous in GenX. But as a main stay Xman, I hate it. I hate everything that was Scott and Emma. This lady literally tortured them in her early years. All that being said, in one of the latest issues they'd kind of addressed her being a witch.
She wasn't a great villain though. The worst thing she did was kill a horse, which is bad, but like... most villains have done WAYYY worse. Like, she never did anything comparable to Magneto, Mystique, etc. Just a few kidnappings and bodyswaps. She even helped out the New Mutants and Magneto at one point back then. Heck, Wolverine and Gambit have done worse than her. Honestly, as a telepath, Xavier has crossed more moral boundaries than Emma. At least when Emma was manipulating the X-men, she was a full out villain and had no attachments to them yet. When Xavier does it, he's manipulating the very people he considers family. So if the heroes are worse than her, I don't really think she's a good villain. She was powerful and had amazing telepathy usage, but they never used her potential as a villain. Emma's journey to being a hero was kinda what made her great.
As a mainstay X-man, she plays off of other characters very well. She brings a sense of practical realism, because she's not a purehearted, good person. She's trying to be better, and be good, but her instincts are bad or shady. And I think that's what makes her so compelling. To see someone whose made mistakes and done wrong things actually try to improve herself, and sometimes she succeeds and sometimes she fails and almost slips into her old ways. And she does have to deal with consequences when that happens. It makes her a very compelling character. I think she works best as an anti-hero, someone who is doing things for the greater good, but her methods can be morally ambiguous.

Let me just step right on in here.... Idk if you read the krokoa era and If you did then i would most definitely tell you BACK OFF MRS. EMMA FROST -STARKE hell the X-Men wouldn't be if it WASNT for her because after jean went psycho for the 2 or 3rd time and professor Xavier left she rebuilt the school and handled EVERYTHING with minimum help from Scott !
