    It's basically like a Magnepan, but in miniature. However, I think all of their speakers are quasi-ribbon now, but the basic function is the same.

    Awesome video!!! I recently became enamored with planar’s when I found their existence! And I know it’s ten years on but I bought a pair of the Drop/Hifiman HE5XX can’s and they sound amazing, but one day I hope to hear a range of the different one’s out there :)

    I just destroyed a planar driver taking it apart. The magent slipped and streched the diaphragm. Honestly I would have had more fun watching 300 dollars burn.

    Broke the diaphragm while disassembling the drivers. So absolutely not recommended to do that. The magnets are VERY strong and they snap pretty hard.

    I wonder if the extreme magnetic properties could cause brain cancer after extended use? You saw how powerful and far reaching the field is on these magnets.

      Late reply, but.. the magnets are aligned inside in such a way that the flux is trapped within the inside of the diaphragm. He's able to show you the field because he's taken it off. You can see the amount of force it'll extert on the diaphragm. The force increases squared to the inverse of distance.

    Tyll. I think when he was carefully disassembling the HE6, it crashed into itself due to the magnets and basically $1200 went down the drain in a second. You can see him sniffling quite a bit in this video.

    Tyll I hope you are off on a beach somewhere man! I am taking apart my Hifiman AnandaBT right now. It is covered by 5 plastic ribs that are distorting the sound but I am riskily going to change that!!!

    With as bad as the camera work is with the reflections on the diaphragms I can't believe you actually uploaded this after editing it instead of just refilling it so that we could see. It's not like it would take you hours to reshoot it just reshoot that part and throw away this video start over

    This is fascinating. Question: Does the powerful magnetic field around your head give you superpowers over time? And if the answer is 'yes' what kinds of powers are involved? Would buying a $2000 pair instead of a $500 pair provide me a quicker path to this power?

    why would they go with gold for the coil instead of the much better conductivity to weight aluminum? is it the glue that is gold colour?

    since it's a film with with metal in it, and not evenly distributed. does that mean that certain frequencies will be dampened and some amplified? since the metal has a different resonating frequency then the film? they add (those freq) and will distort the sound in that way and also will change the freq response in unexpected ways due to the metal not really being one piece (which i get you need the current to follow a path to make a field) but atleast make the gaps closer together. are there any freq response test for these things ?

    was looking for earphone planar driver, how is it look a like.. but never found it. i curious about the inside of Shuoer S12 planar driver or the other planar earphone.. bcs it must extremely super thin trace of the driver anddd can someone repair it? 🤯

    The film on my he 400s has like dents or ripples in it's diaphram on both sides but different, is that final tuning to match the drivers better? Or do the he400s use faulty he 400i drivers. Maybe my set is faulty but they sound great so idk.

    Lol I find it absolutely freaking HILARIOUS that HiFiMan is STILL, LITERALLY TEN YEARS LATER using those EXACT SAME plastic driver enclosures in brand new products! 🤣 (Like the early 2021 released HE400se's for an example.)

    If the cost wasn't so prohibitive I'd love to get a pair of planar magnetic drivers and make a custom pair of headphones for myself. Sounds like this system is the absolute best as far as headphones go. Looks like for now I'll be sticking exclusively to my UE IEMs though.

      Hifiman offers planars for a decent cost now sir. The He-400's can be bought for about $249-$299. The He-500 can be found for a good price as well if you know where to look.

    this leads me to believe to if you put a magnet on the outside of the cups, it would affect this isomagnetic field as you've shown. Is this accurate?

      Yes it will. Depending on the directions of the magnetic fields the effect will be different.
      In theory even the screws would affect the magnetic field if they're made from ordinary steel. That of course is negligible.

    No me lo van a creer. Pero yo me imaginaba que los audífonos magnéticos tenían una bocina que creo que todos conocemos que es la que tiene cono y un gran imán trasero. Mi idea de audífonos magnéticos era que tenían una bocina con un iman del tamaño del cono pero más comprimido para no tener dos bocinas de microcomponente en los oídos. Y apenas me vengo enterando que solo son unas láminas que parecen una placa de un aparato cualquiera. Osea. Es la primera vez que veo una bocinas así. Es más. No sé si llamarlas bocinas o no se que pedo. Ahora. Mi pregunta es. Cómo mierdas hace para que suenen los bajos o graves??. Osea. En una bocina normal, el cono vibra y se levanta. Pero aquí como coño lo hace????

    What is the diaphragm made of?

      Manufacturers use different materials. The most common are kapton and mylar. The thickness of the foil is more important. It should be as thin as possible. The high end headphones have foil that is 1um or even less.
      The biggest unknown would be how they make the tracks on the foil and again every manufacturer probably uses different techniques and materials but no one is telling what.

      Microwaves lol stick the thing on decent amp and you will probably generate x-rays
