I have a De La Mina Verbena that has grown to three feet in diameter in just on year. Living on the California Central Coast this plant has not stopped blooming since I planted it!
Thanks for mentioning that it is a good space filler as other plants mature. I wasn’t going to do the sunset manzanita in the bird garden because I thought the area would look bare for a long time.
I am inland 2.5 hours north of San Francisco. It is extremely hot and dry here for months. Sept 4 is 101 out and these are 2 years old 20" x 20" but flower heavy for me 8 months on a healthy lush green plants. I prune them back in mid June to control size and seems to keep them blooming. They take being blasted by the lawn sprinklers in my back yard by my small area of grass for the dogs as well as much less water in my front boulder bed next to the driveway . On the driveway they form a hedge mixed with Moonbeam Coreopsis, and Mirage Salmon Salvia. Looks incredible for months on end and EASY. Hummers, bees and butterflies are very happy. However, you mentioned that they only live 5 years. Is there a way I can divide, produce them from the flowers seeds or do cuttings so I don't have to start all over again in 5 years?
De La Mina is a cultivar that is always produced by cuttings! It's not necessarily easy to produce from cuttings, but you can always try. Let us know if you are successful! There is a chance that it will not grow back, but we do a hard cutback every few years which normally results in fresh grown and a more vigorous plant.

Great info, nice and concise. Love the notes on overall size and water tolerance!!

The butterfly nectaring on the verbena is the real salesman here. 🦋
I’ve had mine for two years and it has had maybe 3 flowers at most. Doesn’t grow. Looks alive.
