  • What A Piece Of Kit - Episode 8
An often forgotten piece of kit for a bug-out bag/INCH/NCB bag!
There won't be any clothing stores you can buy from and if you're out in a survival situation for a long time, it will help maintain your clothing as it breaks down from use. And since your clothing is your first line of protection from harsh elements, I'd say it's almost as important as a medical kit!

Newbie Prepping is brought to you by Mark and Richard. They are both Englishmen who now live in Northern Ireland and met through their Irish wives who are long time friends. Mark has been Prepping for over ten years now, and introduced the idea of Prepping to Richard, who already had an interest in learning survival skills. And from that came the birth of this channel.
Mark is the adept Prepper who thinks outside of the box better than most. And Richard is the resident Newbie always looking to improve his skills and equipment.
This channel contains useful videos including tips and tutorials on bugging-out locations, bug-out/INCH/'Get Home' bags, with general bushcraft tips and overnighter videos.
"We're not experts, and everyone has their own view on what is best for their personal SHTF (Shit hit the Fan) scenario. The general idea of this channel is that you can follow our journey and learn with us. The times where we make mistakes, as well as the improvements we make."

I got to get some kevlar thread for my pre-threaded needles sealed in straws, I have been making them with nanocord (38 lb test mini paracord) which is too thick for normal small sewing needles so I have to pry the eye with a small flat screwdriver.
The dollar store needles break instantly when I do this so I get good needles at a sewing supplies store (Fabricville here in Canada).
I include a mini paperclip and 2 mini safety pins in my pre-threaded needles sealed in straws, the mini paperclip is for improvising a button using the pliers in my multitool.
Speaking of which you could add a few buttons or paperclips in there…

I would suggest that you get a piece of paper and poke the needles through the paper to cut down the rattle and limit the chance of loosing a needle if you drop the opened tin. Thread the bobbins on to a lace or thick string for the same reason, have a cutting tool in the box, it's always handy to have one in the kit..

If you use waxed paper it will help prevent rust. Flossing thread is very strong and it comes on a reel, OK it's white but a little dirt will darken it

One trick for getting high strength threads is fiber fishing lines, those dark color sewing threads like dark green, maroon, beige are available.
The lightest are rated for 30lbs.
Using shampoo bottle plastic sheet to cut a thread winding card would make it more compact to store a lot of thread.
Another thing that I have been prepping for is stainless steel sewing needles.
Though I had to figure out how to make them with tools I have at home, so I also acquired the knowledge and skill to make needles in the process.
This is a video on making a brass needle, stainless steel just take more time to make.

These are various size needles I made, the first part of the video are side by side comparison with standard needles.

The needle are 304 stainless steel that is quite springy and wouldn't snap easily, they can be bent to be used as curved needles.
Most needles on the market are nickel plated carbon steel needles, which you really need to store dry, most will rust even in storage if you are not careful.
Stainless steel needles could be literally soaked in water and wouldn't rust.
This is my spectacle box sewing kit, which I brought on multiple overseas study trips and this is far from being a basic sewing kit.

It carry about 250-300 meters of threads and about 30 needles, with 60 pins.
The needle file is for sharpening scissors.
