Here's something to think about: Shadow the Hedgehog not only has bigger onscreen stakes than Sonic Forces (and actually shows the invaders actually, you know, DOING STUFF and attacking people and stuff), but it also has a more notable plot. Sonic Forces can boil down to "sonic stops eggman frm conquering the world again", while Shadow the Hedgehog is all about Shadow choosing where he stands in the world, rcovering his lost memories, finding out how he survive SA2 and ultimately becoming a hero, AND said plot has a big effect on the series wwhile SOnic Forces I doubt will have any lasting impact on any future games.
Yeah. And it's biggest failing was the mission system. Honestly, if they simply made a campaign around 20 levels long showing us his development and changing of alignment, that really would have helped it out. Still like it though.
Sega pretty much denied Shadow’s existence. As far as I’ve looked it’s been referenced 3 times. 2 of which being rivals and then forces. 1 is generations in which it’s hidden as a password in the secret trophy room. The plot itself is still laughable anyway. It tries to be serious but it’s just awful and doesn’t make sense . Shadow had barely any Impact. All that matters in shadow is that he got his memory back. Hooray. Forces was a fan fiction but this is next level drunk on a Friday night stuff.
Soundtrack is great. Everything else is so bad that I Consider it worse than 06 by gameplay standards. In plot it’s a tie between nonsensical BS and “time travel lol”. It’s my least favorite sonic game. 06 was a disappointment forces was also one. Boom is good candidate for worst. But damn is Shadow an awful game
Also, they both introduce one-shot villains (Black Doom for Shadow the Hedgehog, and Infinite for Sonic Forces (also Mephiles for Sonic The Hedgehog (2006), but that's irrelevant)) that can be summed up as 'SA2 Shadow, but without his sympathetic qualities'. Though, despite being a simplistic one-shot villain, Black Doom is shown to be sophisticated (or at least as sophisticated as a genocidal alien can get) and intelligent, while Infinite constantly sabotages Eggman's plans just to sate his own sadism (something that Eggman calls him out for). Black Doom is the person that tries to persuade Shadow into believing that humanity isn't worth saving (and makes some valid points, even if his methods aren't justified), while Infinite was just a random mercenary who was sociopathic even before receiving the Phantom Ruby. Anyways, as you said, the plot could've been much better if it had more development and focused on Shadow's characterization more. "Such wasted potential." - Sub-Zero, Mortal Kombat 11

Shadow the Hedgehog is unironically my favorite Sonic game. Nothing's gonna change my mind any time soon. Edit: To make the bosses go faster, use the slow-firing guns to build up chaos control or chaos blast. Once Shadow's all glowy, you're invincible and your guns don't consume ammo when firing. So use weaker guns to build it up then use stronger guns to blast the boss away all at once. (BTW it took me about ten years to learn that there ARE weapons in the Diablon and Black Doom fights. Break the crates around the edges of the arena)

Thanks to the fact that being in rage mode makes you invincible, run right up to him and jump around and homing attack to see what moves he responds to (I think homing attacking Sonic is one of his attack triggers) The REAL annoyance with Diablon is when he flies close to the edge or even offstage. It becomes way harder to bait out any attacks so you just have to wait till he's back on the ground with you

Chaos Blast is a great way of doing a tiny bit of damage but you can consistently end the fight in under two minutes if you don't use it. Homing attacking Diablon and Sonic, or just staying close to him for a while, all triggers him to attack you and drop his shield. His big AOE doesn't stop bullets so it's also a fine time to unload. Just don't camp away from him and you'll get plenty of opportunities to attack
It's a shame that all the jokes and memes made Sega think this game was one of their worse mistakes. I think it's an alright game, not great, but I still prefer it over Heroes, and yes, a sequel that fixes some of its problems and streamlines more the gameplay would be cool, as unlikely as that might be at the moment,
Let’s do it like so: Sonic Heroes 2 Followed quickly by Shadow the Hedgehog 2 We could even have a Christmas BUNDLE of them, and the plots could have similar tones to their original counterparts. Heroes 2 Having a “Teamwork and friendship save the day, and screw you Egghead.” Who is really Mecha-Metal sonic just trying to usurp his boss again, maybe even update the world map to be free roam or something. And then there’s Shadow 2: Which I would like to make a similarly philosophical game about his choices, beliefs, and prospective futures based around his decisions. Make it massive; as this game already was, and maybe have a path to resurrect Maria as a mission set, whereby he confronts the concept of mortality. Or another where he does his best to just live to his highest standard, aiming to outdo Sonic, while going about it his own way. And the Neutral path could be a fun thought experiment on his future relationship with Gun. Make it all kinds of Gray though to fuck with the fan base for years to come, All so I can Laugh! Muhahahahahahahahahah.
This game taught me a new emotion when, while playing it, I realised that there existed a nebulous area of overlap between enjoying something and _fucking hating it with every fibre of my body_ . I still don't know what this emotion is called but I feel it anew every time Shadow the Edgehog is even vaguely mentioned. I still own this game for the original Xbox. I'd play it again but I'd need a crowbar to pry open the tray just to put in the disc...

On the topic of expressions, I also like that Jet doesn't just have the default face when he crashes either, he's visibly screaming if you pause and look closer. I love these little details! That "I never did missions" was me so much.. because rented it so didn't have the actual case or whatever so I just was like "get to ending" plus the first one the alien guy was like "get me the emerald" so i did and he was mad at me.... never grasped really the missions until after first playthrough, and then was like "oh i guess i gotta do other stuff in each level, alright where's the level select?" and when discovered there was none.. i did not do more than neutral and maybe a few pure evil levels.. also love how the level layout can be "hey i have been an ass and killed everyone.. but last minute am good, so forgive me please" or "hey guys ya i know i've been helping out but.. eh.. now i wanna be evil"

@@conspiracypanda1200 It is true. You can control the secondary character in Shadow the Hedgehog with a second controller. However, Eggman and Black Doom cannot be controlled and it's quite impossible for the second player to even keep up with Sonic--much like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Genesis. The camera does not follow the second player and will reset them if the are far away. Most of the time, the second character is also far slower and weaker than Shadow, save for Sonic who still possesses the excellent Homing attack.
About the Fang the sniper part: 22:39 A fan game called "Sonic Robo Blast 2" actually has Fang as a playable character, He uses his pop gun to attack enemies in front of him and he can do a tail bounce to reach higher places he couldn't get to by normal jumping. His tail bounce is similar to say "Tigger the Tiger" from "Winnie the Pooh". I do wish to see more old characters again in the future like Fang, Mighy, Ray, Bean and bark. Either in an offical sonic game or a fan game.
Not only was Shadow made to save the world, but he was partially created so Gerald Robotnik could cure what was basically super cancer which maria was infected with.
This game is definitely the last game Sega had an actual idea of where they wanted to go with their characters. Even though this game is pretty mediocre but at least they knew where they were going with shadow. The fact that Sega even wanted to end shadows arc is kinda respectable. Shadow moves like he's on ice and you have to play westopolis zone like what over 20 times This game blows. Also fun fact the second player can control some of the buddies in the stages but it means about nothing because shadow controls the camera. I mean this game is so edgy that shadow says the d word I mean shadow being a jerk for no reason is definitely edgy material. I'm an edge lord and even I can say this game is sorta crap and felt like a bunch of incohesive ideas and designs put in one mess of a game.

There's actually a 2P split screen mod for Shadow the Hedgehog. You can play as Red and Yellow Shadow, or if you open the 2P Battle Screen and pick a character before going to story, you can play as the silver variants

That "I never did missions" was me so much.. because rented it so didn't have the actual case or whatever so I just was like "get to ending" plus the first one the alien guy was like "get me the emerald" so i did and he was mad at me.... never grasped really the missions until after first playthrough, and then was like "oh i guess i gotta do other stuff in each level, alright where's the level select?" and when discovered there was none.. i did not do more than neutral and maybe a few pure evil levels.. also love how the level layout can be "hey i have been an ass and killed everyone.. but last minute am good, so forgive me please" or "hey guys ya i know i've been helping out but.. eh.. now i wanna be evil"

If true that would be the second game to slip partial multiplayer into a game without stating it (the other being DMC3). I'd test it with my own copy but my Xbox is pretty old now.

@@conspiracypanda1200 It is true. You can control the secondary character in Shadow the Hedgehog with a second controller. However, Eggman and Black Doom cannot be controlled and it's quite impossible for the second player to even keep up with Sonic--much like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Genesis. The camera does not follow the second player and will reset them if the are far away. Most of the time, the second character is also far slower and weaker than Shadow, save for Sonic who still possesses the excellent Homing attack.

A fan game called "Sonic Robo Blast 2" actually has Fang as a playable character, He uses his pop gun to attack enemies in front of him and he can do a tail bounce to reach higher places he couldn't get to by normal jumping.
His tail bounce is similar to say "Tigger the Tiger" from "Winnie the Pooh".
I do wish to see more old characters again in the future like Fang, Mighy, Ray, Bean and bark. Either in an offical sonic game or a fan game.
Not only was Shadow made to save the world, but he was partially created so Gerald Robotnik could cure what was basically super cancer which maria was infected with.
I think he found Black Doom and discovered his blood could cure space aids, so he made Shadow to act as a blood donor for the cure.

Even though this game is pretty mediocre but at least they knew where they were going with shadow.

There's actually a 2P split screen mod for Shadow the Hedgehog. You can play as Red and Yellow Shadow, or if you open the 2P Battle Screen and pick a character before going to story, you can play as the silver variants
