Even a period piece like Gangs of New York included some of the popular standards of that time. The bar scene where that Irish dude is singing “New York Girls (My Dear Annie)” was just brilliantly selected and placed. It was just the product of great research and making sure that they would include a song like that in the movie. The fact that it was sung live on sat also adds polish to the brilliance of the song

The tone of the music fits Jimmy's state of mind and how a thought suddenly occurred to him on how he could liberate himself from a burden and it made him grin, a perverse grin: because he had murder on his mind.
In other words, Jimmy got off on murder and its use to get whatever he wanted. It's the classic use of violence and sensuality together, which so many mobsters and criminals mix together to feel satisfaction. It's Thanatos (death) and Eros (love) together, called the death drive in psychology.
The song by Cream, "Sunshine of Our Love," is actually about a man excited at the prospect of sex with a woman, so Jimmy was feeling arousal when it occurred to him to just have the guy murdered because he would accomplish two things: free himself from a debt and gaining perverse satisfaction from the violence exacted on Morrie.
I sincerely believe that's why Scorsese used it. He understood that song and the character of Jimmy.

I read somewhere that it's less economically viable today to get top tier actors and production as costs in the industry have sky rocketed since this era of cinema. Also, with the rise of streaming services and piracy the more expensive cinema experience is less appealing to consumers. Couple that with the fact that vhs/dvd sales revenue is a thing of the past it means making movies to the calibre they used to isn't a frequent occurrence. This movie in particular though had a blend of some of the best actors of the past century with one of the best directors and an authentic story line. It's always going to be difficult to top.

It's not only the movie... the soundtracks to Scorsese's flicks are absolutely awesome!
The scene in the Copa with The Crystals playing in the background, Casino's with Gimme Shelter... everything's fantastic.

Apart from being a personal project, I think it's where I can "miss" less info, because I want to insert a fictional crew of the Gambinos in 70's and 80's real world NY. Which itself it's not easy (turf, businesses, family history, etc.). I kinda want the audience to feel they know all the guys, without them ever existing! 🤣
I'm just an amateur, so I'm writing this just to myself, couldn't care less if it's noticed hahah

Scorsese is a hundred steps beyond other directors. As it is being written he has already blocked the movements, worked out the camera angles, the camera movements, the main focus, the FILM SPEED, and the MUSIC; and the kicker is that it is all so perfect that people are studying this scene and the entire film decades after it was released. It will definitely be used as required viewing in good cinematography classes.
