Today, she’s permanently berthed in Cleveland, Ohio, where she serves as a museum ship. She belongs to the Gato class-one of the most famous U.S. submarine classes of World War II, comprising 77 ships.
As the story is a long and interesting one, we’ve divided this episode into two parts. The first is dedicated to the development history of the United States’ submarine fleet.
Naval Legends is a series about the construction, service, and daring deeds of legendary 20th-century ships.

The USS Cod is also pretty famous in our Royal Dutch Navy. During WW2 in 1945 she saved the crew of our submarine HNLMS O19. And the grandfather of one of my former colleagues was part of the O19 crew at the time (he was Indonesian). Through my colleague I heard about the Cod and a party they threw in Australia for the crew of the Cod as a thanks. In return the crew from the Cod painted a cocktail glass with O19 on the tower next to the other trophy marks from sunken ships.

Even though I was on three Nuclear submarines which were much bigger than the USS COD, we still had similar problems of overcrowding on two of them. We still loaded torpedoes by hand on the USS HENRY CLAY SSBN625 and had to hot rack on the USS PUFFER SSN652 and the USS LOS ANGELES SSN688 . We even had to put food in every space we could when we did a Westpac on the USS PUFFER. We considered those WW2 submarine veterans heroes to be emulated 30 years after the war ended.

The US Navy should have insisted that each crewman learn how to swim.
I served in the US Army in the 70's and 80's and we all had to go through training
to survive in water during a simulated river crossing. As I recall we did have one
senior NCO who refused to go in the water. He said Nam didn't kill him and he was
god damned if he was gonna drown in a pool in West Germany.

Excellent mini-documentary on subs/Gatos and the USS Cod! I've been an amateur sub enthusiast for 5 decades but this video revealed tidbits of inner workings, ship life, and hazards endured I'd never known about. (Loved the artwork/logo on the shipkeeper's sweatshirt! This would fly equally well at a Grateful Dead concert as well for those who warned you way back in the day - 'Don't Tread on Me'!)

Awesome video!!! I'm from Northeast Ohio - Madison, Ohio to be exact - roughly 45 miles east of Cleveland and along the shores of beautiful Lake Erie. The USS COD is positioned between Burke Lake Front Airport and The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Also close by is a state memorial to Admiral Kidd - killed at Pearl Harbor aboard USS ARIZONA - who is from Cleveland. Have visited the USS COD a few times and those were great experiences. BIG THANKS for showing snippets of the Cleveland skyline and Lake Erie - have been living out on the prairies of Kansas for the past 25+ years, and sure do miss the sites of Cleveland and Lake Erie!!!!

It's good to know that supporting a game by buying ships and other components of World of Warships is helping to promote History telling. Schools are failing to teach, so through games and other media human History must be told. Keep it truthful, feature all the Naval History from all countries as time and money allows. Up to the time the Navel Dept . finally admitted that there is a problem with the torpideo's .
There was only a one time test of the fish .
One functioned and detonated properly .
The second shot functioned properly But did not detonate .
That was the first and last test of our US torpedoes .
Congress told the Navy Dept . Not to do any more tests because of the cost of each torpedoes was too much for wasting them on tests .
Later in the war it was the Submariners who fixed the problem . Removing the Magnetic detonators and changing the mane firing pin .

@@jamesleon457 505 is quite the experience for sure. It's a bit of a shame that they cut out most of the internal hatches, but they do have to balance preservation with accessibility. I still find it cool (and funny) that they contacted many of the German companies that built parts for the boat to see if they could get assistance in restoring it. The truly funny part is, the response was something like, 'we're sorry you have our boat, but since it's going to be on display for some time, it might as well be a monument to German engineering'. Priceless.

13:50 Navy? That was not the Navys fault. That were the bureaucrats in the Department of Ordenance. It took the Navy 2 years to make enough trouble for the bureaucrats to fix it. They also fuked up the Iowas main battery, so the guns wouldn't fit and they had to design new ones.

    • @hawkeye5955
      @hawkeye5955 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The magnetic detonators weren't the only problem. The early war USN torpedoes ran too deep because the Bureau of Ordinance tested the torpedoes without the warheads in place. B Ord insisted the captains were at fault for not setting the proper depth on their torpedoes.
