    One thing that dash cam videos have taught me is to get past a truck as fast as you can, and if you can't then get back behind it. Never stay next to a truck and match its speed.

    • @oldman9642
      @oldman9642 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +48

      Absolutely correct - either pass it by several car lengths or stay completely behind it. Another tip, never pull up beside a semi on your left at a traffic light, these things sometimes require 2 lanes to turn right and won’t see you because you’re in his blind spot. Rule of thumb - if you can’t see the driver in HIS mirrors, he CANNOT see you.

      Not a big deal with typical trucks.
      I only worry about fuel and chemical tankers, and weird looking loads. Of course, mind the blind spots.
      Keep in mind that on average, more trucks have dash cams than passenger cars. So always an abundant supply of spectacular crash videos.

    • @bobinthewest8559
      @bobinthewest8559 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      @@AlphaHumphrey…
      ABS actually INCREASES your stopping distance. Its purpose is to allow you to steer while braking hard. It does this by intermittently RELEASING brakes at alternating wheels (in rapid succession), which means it will take longer to actually stop.
      With or without ABS… stopping within that distance, was entirely impossible.

    • @Firedrake1313
      @Firedrake1313 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +42

      @@bobinthewest8559. ABS works by keeping the brakes just below the limit of where the wheels would lock. the system varies a bit between makes and some are adjusted to also allow for steering. But in general with VERY few exceptions it's going to be the shortest distance you can stop the car. Locking the wheels and sliding takes lots more room AND means you can't steer. The pickup might have made it if he hadn't braked at all (or hit the accelerator) but there's no possible way for him to have stopped except for driving correctly (not speeding, looking for cross traffic) in the first place. ABS brakes better than any person ever could and it will save your life.

    I had a semi rear end my prius. Lifted my car up and moved it. But his squishy plastic bumper and my plastic bumper just absorbed the impact. It was wild. When I got out to look, saw a little paint trade but bumper still sturdy, looked up at the trucker and gave a thumbs up. He gave me a signal of wiping sweat off his brow, like "Phew! Close call" and we both kept on driving. I like to think he still tells the tale of the new prius driver he rear-ended who did not ask for insurance information.

There was only a slight scuff to her rear bumper and she told me not to worry because her husband could easily buff it up
      The next time I renewed my insurance the person asked me if there were any accidents since, and I honestly said only a minor incident, and she said Oh no! we were sued for 300000 dollars by a woman who claimed serious whiplash and trauma! • @Asheface11
      @Asheface11 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      As far as damage is concerned, absolutely. But a good proportion of these clips show the trucker at fault. Truckers are supposed to have a lot more training than the average non-commercial driver, yet treat the road as if they’re driving a 5000lb vehicle. Professional drivers should do better. I know a guy that’s been driving for 30 years with close to 3 million miles driven without an “accident”. His explanation: “I always drive in the middle lane, and always let people in my lane because I don’t take it personally”. Check your ego truckers, drive like a professional, not the average car driver.

      The worst place to be is on the right front corner. From the nose of the trailer until you are passed their front bumper is not where you want to ever be for any amount of time more than absolutely necessary and should be avoided if possible. Even if you need to change speed, change lanes, whatever It's not a safe place to be for any length of time.

    My neighbor is a retired trucker.
    The trucking company that he inherited from his father was involved in hauling building materials when they were building the expressways in Chicago.
    He always tells us a story about when he just pulled out of a supply yard loaded with building materials and was driving down the road so that he could get on I-90.
    He noticed a Studebaker Lark with three men in it that pulled out of a bar by the side of the road and instead of going through the yellow light about 50 feet further down the road they slammed on the brakes and came to a complete stop.
    He could not stop in time and he said the man in the backseat looked out the rear window and realized what was going to happen the semi went up and over the Studebaker and all three men inside were killed.

      Sad waste either way because if he'd gunned it, even after slowing; he may well have survived with injuries as the semi would have clipped his tailgate, putting him in a spin and flipping the truck, but not obliterating the entire cab.
