Claudine Gay’s case reflects history of discrediting Black intelligence

  • The news of Claudine Gay's resignation as Harvard's president has sparked anger among those who say the university yielded to pressure from right-wing billionaires. Many argue that the orchestrated effort by the far-right to remove Harvard's first Black president is part of a broader history of undermining Black credentials. Joining Ali Velshi to discuss Gay's forced resignation and its implications for academia are scholars Eddie Glaude Jr., a professor in the African American Studies Department at Princeton University, and Jelani Cobb, a staff writer at the New Yorker and the dean of Columbia Journalism School.

    Truth: She got hired on the basis of race and she got fired on the basis of performance. I didn’t hear her complaining when she got the job because others were excluded because they didn’t meet DEI “criteria”. So the pool was very small. Which is ironic at Harvard. Being the president of Harvard requires you to have academic achievement among the best in the world, emotional intelligence, good judgement, and skill at internal and public relations. Her performance in all of these categories abysmal in a high stakes environment dealing with real world impacts and student safety. That’s why she got fired - because people held her to the standards of a president of Harvard and looked harder at her academic record. But she claims “race” for her firing. The Billionaire Ackman's wife straight-up plagiarized on her dissertation but everyone is o.k. with it. THIS IS A DOUBLE STANDARD AND ACKMAN IS A HYPOCRITE.

      it probably is a double standard, but you still have to pick a side; either racism, sexism, and calls for genocide are always wrong, or always right, regardless of who does it.

    First time ‘plagiarism’ is mentioned is at 4:30min mark, so not considered the key issue here to be discussed front and center. And then ‘plagiarism’ is minimized as a major breach of academic ethics and conduct. No surprise here.
    Question: How are plagiarism and shoplifting similar or different?

      Although both Plagiarism and shoplifting would probably discount you as a candidate for the Presidency of a University such as Harvard, Plagiarism is actually an offense against true academia and is used as a criteria for expulsion from the institution. So if you are a President of a bank, embezzlement would not look good on your record (you fire people for that), just as plagiarism does not look good on your record if you expel people for that.

    • @cackalackcowboy2127
      @cackalackcowboy2127 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Let’s go down your rabbit hole, let’s say you were the President of Operations for Walmart, and Walmart found that you had shoplifted from them on more than one occasion, would you expect to keep your job? Would expect to be given another job and keep your salary (in this case $900,000 a year)?
      P.S. Harvard is expected to have a standard well over WalMart, do you not agree?
