Universities are a common good but these Ivy League schools have become businesses. One cannot expect academic freedom to remain where for whatever reasons it disturbs that business model.
If they were all about business, they'd charge significantly more than they do, and they wouldn't give students whose parents make less than $100K a free education. Aside from the larger extinuating circumstances, i went to grad school in a quantitative field. I've heard people try and qualify fhe academic misconduct as less severe because she "only" failed to cite and that the argument and data were hers. But in quant fields, especially on a dissertation, you have to cite everything. Everything has to be in place. And the methodology is one of the most important parts to get right. I went to a public research university and i would not have been able to slip text into an assignment a) because they have scanners now that check for plagiarism and b) because I'd have to have an academic misconduct trial and risk getting kicked out
Yes! We use Turnitin to check our papers and it’s highly effective. There is no excuse for not properly referencing works used. I’m guessing her papers were before these tools were available but Universities spend many modules teaching ethics and research methodology. She really would have known the severity of plagiarism
Did they have scanners in 1997? How many people who referenced manually would pass the test if scrutinized with AI. It was almost certain to raise some questions by just picking Ackman’s wife’s thesis and scrutinizing it. This is an MIT thesis done over 10 years after Gays. While Universities generally have autonomy to grant various kinds of professorships, I have personally not encountered any that places a strict restriction of authorship of At Least 3 Books! Let alone this casual generalization you have made for the entire UK!
There are a lot of academic fields in which the best researchers never publish a book. It’s all scientific papers and they’re almost always by multiple authors. The first author is the person who did most of the lab work and the last author is head of the project. In the middle are people who contributed significantly.
I cannot accept her reply of "it depends on the context" to the question of genocide. I cannot understand why that answer by anyone would ever be okay. However, I question all of the recent accusations of plagiarism. Are all schools as sloppy as Harvard and MIT about checking papers submitted. Why wasn't the need for corrections brought to her attention when her paper was submitted? If we examined all papers submitted at all colleges, I wonder how many would not have some form of plagiarism. Reading below, it is clear to me that some people are (still) missing the point. Plagiarism is either defensible or it is not. If ANY mistake means dismissal, then every person who makes these mistakes should be dismissed. If they are not dismissed, then YES, there is a reason to search for reasons/causes for the differentiations as to who is let go and who is allowed to keep their jobs. When in a country such as ours where skin, culture, gender does make a difference, it must be considered as to why distinctions are made between who is allowed to keep their jobs and who are not. To not see that difference is a choice on each of us to play ignorant or prove yourself so.
We could debate whether "any" mistake means dismissal. However in this case there are about 40 instances of verbatim passages from other authors in the 11 papers she has published in a 20 year career. She has admitted this occurred. Did she simply "forget" to make the appropriate citation in all those cases? Highly unlikely but at minimum it demonstrates a history of truly sloppy work that is not up to the standard you should demand from a tenured Professor and certainly not the President of a top university.

I won’t be surprised some would come up with things from the new presidents stuff if it is run through AI. So the standards today with tech can’t be compared to those almost 30 years ago.
Not having cited some things correctly is NOT the reason she was let go. That’s just the smoke screen the monsters that are doing this do to try to legitimize and deflect from what they are actually doing which is to silence people, demean people and perpetuate whichever -ism they are targeting at the time.
@@notnabsar So what's your point, it's becoming easier to catch a theif? This may surprise you, but many people never plagiarized because they had too much integrity.
Not that I disagree with all the importance of correctly citing your sources. I have a degree in history and political science. So I get that said importance. However I argue that it happened in most older works, from when you couldn't just scan. It is something that was almost unavoidable with the amount of pages you wrote and which would have to be checked. I would have to say, if you want to have everyone resign who has citation problems, you probably won't have many older professors left.
But what I have more problems with, is, that some people are singled out here. If this initiative was genuine, they wouldn't go after people with some matching characteristics, irrelevant to the issue, but after all older thesis. And we have that Ruffo guy admitting it is political. And with that I have my qualms.
So the people that pointed at the wrong doing are the wrong doers. Make sense.

3 Self Authored books? This is a bold faced lie. For the sake of due diligence, I had to check again the professorship criteria for several UK universities before typing my response. Academic Output can be Evidenced by research publications, monographs, editorials etc..
