Thanks so much Carl! When my girl gets a couple months older she is gonna love this rattle! My son is 2 & he loves to play with it. Thanks again buddy! Nathan
Carl Jacobson I love wooden baby toys! I should try to make one of these for my daughter when she is big enough to start playing with one! Maybe my little Jet can handle something like this...
Just come across this one Carl. I must say you love your Maple Burl. Nice simple project brought to life with the use of the Maple. One of these for a new born could turn into a family heirloom. Great work as usual.
Very nice, beautiful piece of wood. I'm still practicing on my lathe and improving my skills I still need to get a few larger chisels and some more wood and them I can start doing video's
What a neat project, I would never have thought to make a baby rattle! I'm going to have to batch out a few of those one of these days. Great video Carl. I hope you have a great time at the symposium.
Great little project. Have fun at the show, it sounds like a blast. Will you be shooting any video to share with those of us who can't go? Regards, Bob
Carl: I love the rattle and just turned one out of Poplar that is a beautiful cream, green and light yellow color. But, I have a question about hollowing tools like the one you use in this video (except that mine is a one piece, non carbide tipped one)??. I got it to use in all types of hollowing procedures, but no matter what I do it always catches and SNAPS downwards and almost rips it out of my hands. Am I putting too much pressure on it?? (I noticed in this rattle video you seemed to be barely touching the wood right???), or do I have it at the wrong angle? The wrong height?? Or a combo of some or all of the above?? In order to do the rattle I'm working on now, I just had to take a 1/4" gouge, and put it into the top hollow part of the rattle at an angle to TRY and follow thee shape of the top of the rattle. ANY tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chuck Alexander
Thanks! Amazing wood Sorry that I have bombarding you with questions but I'm a beginner and I just ordered a wood turning book, but the question is I can't get my drive spur out of my delta midi lathe take stock. Best regards, Luke
Whats the lathe speed when using carbide cutters? Tried 500rpm but it just catches, dont have a gouge yet so i was hoping to learn how to use the carbide cutters, any tips?
Atle Grønsund For this baby rattle, I started it out at 2,000 I had the flying saucer down to 500 only because it wasn't true. They cut very nice once you get the speed up.
Carl, nice raddle. I just bought Sorby 16" Sovereign Handle and TurnMaster carbide system. Make fast work out of projects. I held off buying them for a while because I wanted to learn on the basic tools first. I still used the gouges on many projects that I want to have more control over. I guess they all have their place in turning. Best regards.
I thought you might have mentioned that regarding baby rattles, the US Consumer Products Safety Guidelines suggests that one use a minimum diameter of 1 11/16” to prevent the possibility of choking.
Carl, I am a beginner woods turner and would love to make this for my baby girl, but I've never seen a tool like the one you use to hollow out the top. What is it called? I don't have bowl gouges yet either, just a very basic set so far. What would you recommend?
Carl Jacobson Thank you very much for the information. By the way, I plan on making this and the lighthouse, top two on my list. I already have all the materials for the lighthouse, and I plan on making some modifications which I will share with you once done. Both are going to be a bit tricky since I don't have a chuck, but doable.
The problem I have been having is with the hot glue. It has bonded so well it's nearly impossible to take the waste block off. If you could tell me how to not make it bond so tight that would be useful. Best regards , Luke
Hi Carl, Nice rattle. I’ve always wondered about these maraca-style rattles. What is the minimum diameter of the butt of the handle that is safe to prevent a choking hazard? Thanks!

Sorry that I have bombarding you with questions but I'm a beginner and I just ordered a wood turning book, but the question is I can't get my drive spur out of my delta midi lathe take stock.
Best regards, Luke
NorthSurvival If you haven't got it yet, just stick a rod through the headstock/tailstock and tap it out.
Whats the lathe speed when using carbide cutters? Tried 500rpm but it just catches, dont have a gouge yet so i was hoping to learn how to use the carbide cutters, any tips?

Brilliant!!! I am going to do one of these...
***** Thank you Ed

Morgan Walser Hey Morgan, It's the Easy Wood Hollowing tool. They use carbide cutters, that are easy to control.
Robert Sorby makes a nice Bowl gouge.
Carl Jacobson
Thank you very much for the information.

Take care,
Carl

Thank you Greg!!
Hi Carl,
Nice rattle. I’ve always wondered about these maraca-style rattles. What is the minimum diameter of the butt of the handle that is safe to prevent a choking hazard? Thanks!
