For my lads with ubuntu or similar....you might have postgres already installed in your system....installing some other version over the existing one can create unnecessary trouble for beginners(like me).....check if you have it installed in your system already....if you want to upgrade delete the previous one or make necessary settings for proper functioning

Hi Dennis, First thank you for your clear tutorials! I first tried to set this up using Azure SQL server but that was giving me a lot of problems. I added the postgres to the other ecommerce tutorial you've made. One remark with that one. When the cart is checked with the total in the form to set the order to complete the values do not match anymore. For instance 23.4 is regarded not equal to 23.40. So setting both values to the same data type (for instance float) did solve it for me.
I got the PostgreSQL database to work, but now it wont let me log in with my existing users. How do you get the existing users into the postgreSQL database?

@@jorjolandes Ok sure. So you will add: AWS_S3_HOST = 's3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com' and AWS_S3_REGION_NAME = 'us-east-2' in your settings.py. However, 'us-east-2' is my location, you have to change to your location. I hope this solves your issue.
Hi Dennis, PostgreSQL for Amazon RDS isn't free, at least not anymore. There is no option to select free tier when creating the database, and if you scroll at the bottom it will say how much a month it costs.

If its the error I think your getting then its probably because you forgot to allow "Public accessibility". I talk about this at 11:20. This means you haven't set permissions to access the database outside of AWS. Is this error happening when connecting from PG Admin.

This is the error showing. the wrapper_function couldn't find the Groups I created, neither admin nor customer. I once uninstalled Postgresql cause it wasn't connecting to AWS. Hey Dennis, thanks for the video. Not using Python/Django, however trying to connect to RDS from Node, which is kinda similar using node-postgres. My question is why do you put 'postgres' in your database name if you have 'database-1' in your RDS and it works. Initially I used 'database-1' in my app, I got an error that my database doesn't exist. However after changing my database variable in my app to 'postgres' the connection magically worked. Can you explain what's happening or do you have any assumptions? Thank you!

Hi Dennis, awesome content, thanks so much! Here I leave a comment in case it can help some people. I finally have my database live thanks to you :) For anyone experiencing the "timeout expired" error, which I have experienced myself, I would recommend following the documentation: aws.amazon.com/getting-started/tutorials/create-connect-postgresql-db/?nc2=type_a The main difference with this video is that you don't use existing VPC security groups, you use a new one which you can name yourself. I am not very experienced so I can't explain much. I followed the docs and solved my problem.
Thank you. Your suggestion solved my timeout issue as well. To reiterate... when creating the database, you have to select "Create New" for the "VPC security group" and then give it a name. That's the ONLY thing I did different from the video, and it works great.
for newbies like me just uninstall whatever database you are using and install it again, and also check if you mispelled the 'PASSWORD' i cracked my head and found that i only have one 'S' :D

I'm not sure why I had issues with connecting to the AWS DB from my PC, but I had to change the "Inbound" rules on AWS to allow "My IP" rather than allow any.. Maybe it's some mistake I've made along the way.

After this I could enter the details in pgadmin and updated the same in settings.py. But when i ran "python manage.py" migrate it gave error as Operational error:FATAL: database does not exist. Pls advise

In my country(India), you can use any debit card, doesn't need to be yours, and when it asks for tax details you just say don't have any. They will probably give an automated call or something to verify the account. If you stay within the free tier its all good. Check if you have something similar in your country.
for linux devs After installing postgres on the machine,do this to follow along: $ psql -U postgres -h localhost then ---> $ CREATE DATABASE OWNER postgres; ----->$\l ---> to check if database i created if the above is successful change the connection details in settings.py file and run migrations for AWS RDS: after creating the database Open the database security group in AWS; and choose "Edit inbound rules"; "Add rule". There is a "My IP" option in the dropdown menu; select that option to auto-populate with your computer's public IP address in CIDR notation and click Save rules Now if that is finished ,you will be able to connect to the RDS successfully using this command,hope u remember ur initial database name,password,username and port. -->psql --host= --port=5432 --username= --password --dbname= If the above was successful ,change the connection details and do migrations.
this shows because ip address set in rds changes all the time, so if you refresh ip address in security group rules (set again my ip) it will work. But problem is that with next computer start ip changes again. Solution is elastic iP but I don't know how to set it for rds.
You can connect to other databases if you like. But the standard SQLite is not fit for running on a production environment because it is a very lightweight database and the possibilities that locks or other errors occur are not something you want to have in a production-like environment.

I upgraded my pip using the following command in terminal: "pip install --upgrade pip" I also installed homebrew (its a packagemanager like pip) using the follwoing commandline: "/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh)" Then I entered this into terminal and things started to work: "brew install postgresql" I hope this helps I was stuck on this for ages

This is the error showing. the wrapper_function couldn't find the Groups I created, neither admin nor customer. I once uninstalled Postgresql cause it wasn't connecting to AWS. Now the AWS issue is solved and this is the new malfunction. @Dennis do reply sir. You never replied to any of my queries.
You have to create a super user account and create manually the groups "admin" and "customer"

Hello, I got stuck on the user role permission of allowing only a customer or admin to view some specific parts. Is there a better way to write this?
It is my first time into writing anything in django.
It doesnt allow me to login as a customer, but only as admin and only in the admin section.

Debit card should do but I suppose you mean card in general. That's to bad, I don't know of any hosting platforms that don't require a payment method upfront.

Not using Python/Django, however trying to connect to RDS from Node, which is kinda similar using node-postgres.
My question is why do you put 'postgres' in your database name if you have 'database-1' in your RDS and it works.
Initially I used 'database-1' in my app, I got an error that my database doesn't exist. However after changing my database variable in my app to 'postgres' the connection magically worked.
Can you explain what's happening or do you have any assumptions?

For anyone experiencing the "timeout expired" error, which I have experienced myself, I would recommend following the documentation:

The main difference with this video is that you don't use existing VPC security groups, you use a new one which you can name yourself. I am not very experienced so I can't explain much. I followed the docs and solved my problem.

Thank you. Your suggestion solved my timeout issue as well. To reiterate... when creating the database, you have to select "Create New" for the "VPC security group" and then give it a name. That's the ONLY thing I did different from the video, and it works great.

I'm not sure why I had issues with connecting to the AWS DB from my PC, but I had to change the "Inbound" rules on AWS to allow "My IP" rather than allow any.. Maybe it's some mistake I've made along the way.

In my country(India), you can use any debit card, doesn't need to be yours, and when it asks for tax details you just say don't have any. They will probably give an automated call or something to verify the account. If you stay within the free tier its all good.

for linux devs
After installing postgres on the machine,do this to follow along:
$ psql -U postgres -h localhost
then ---> $ CREATE DATABASE OWNER postgres;
----->$\l ---> to check if database i created
if the above is successful change the connection details in settings.py file and run migrations
for AWS RDS:
after creating the database
Open the database security group in AWS; and choose "Edit inbound rules"; "Add rule". There is a "My IP" option in the dropdown menu; select that option to auto-populate with your computer's public IP address in CIDR notation and click Save rules
Now if that is finished ,you will be able to connect to the RDS successfully using this command,hope u remember ur initial database name,password,username and port.

If the above was successful ,change the connection details and do migrations.

this shows because ip address set in rds changes all the time, so if you refresh ip address in security group rules (set again my ip) it will work. But problem is that with next computer start ip changes again. Solution is elastic iP but I don't know how to set it for rds.

You can connect to other databases if you like. But the standard SQLite is not fit for running on a production environment because it is a very lightweight database and the possibilities that locks or other errors occur are not something you want to have in a production-like environment.

I upgraded my pip using the following command in terminal:
"pip install --upgrade pip"
I also installed homebrew (its a packagemanager like pip) using the follwoing commandline:
"/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh)"
Then I entered this into terminal and things started to work:
"brew install postgresql"
I hope this helps I was stuck on this for ages
