My favorite method is splitting up one of these pouches into two ziploc bags, adding some freeze-dried veggies, then eating with a packet of chicken. Turns it into two meals, saves a little money, and you can have a more balanced protein : carbs ratio! That Cuban Coconut Black Beans & Rice goes awesome with some freeze-dried corn and a little Tajin ☺
I would seriously love you to do this for all the major brands. Like I have a much better idea of what I'd think about getting based off of this video. Would love a Mountain house or Pack-It Gourmet one. Would also love some delving into breakfast ones.
The Norwegian Turmat meals are not to be defeated. They are so good I brought some back to the usa and on my last trip someone said they would rather eat that then a real post hike meal. It’s UNREAL quality.
Was that a birb in the BG at 17:04? 😮😂 I loved the format of this video! Hearing your opinions on camping foods and gear has been invaluable! I’d love to see more of this!
I am a 61 year old female who's getting ready to have two full knee replacement not at the same time but this year. I love watching your videos they are giving me the inspiration to backpack❤😊
This is nicely done (as are all of your videos!)! I’ve found the Backpacker’s Pantry pastas to be pretty solid as well - their Spring Vegetable Pasta in Butter sauce is a pretty satisfying meal after a hot day of backpacking.
I recommend Outdoor Pantry and Packit Gourmet as a couple brands you could check out for well above average freeze dried meals. I won't taint the judges with my opinions beyond suggesting the brands, but I keep both of these brands in my outdoor meal box.
I love this style of video! I'd love if you guys made more random videos like this going over gear and other backpacking stuff! My favorite is the pad Thai for sure! I've always loved that one!
Honestly thanks a ton for making this. In researching freeze dried meals for day hikes and primitive camping trips it seems like the vast majority of people are talking about Mountain House and Peak Refuel. It’s great to see other options too.
Robby's comments about the vegetables in the curry were spot on, because I don't feel like most of the freeze dried meals have enough vegetables. I make my own a lot of times, or will bring bags of dehydrated vegetables to supplement, otherwise I end up feeling like crap. One brand I adore for having more vegetable content is Good-to-Go, so I'd love to see you review some of those. Plus, most of them have excellent flavor (personal favorites are Mexican Quinoa and Kale and White Bean), which would be exciting for Andrew 😉
Interesting, I've never had a meal like these before and I've always wondered about the taste and what they'd look like on a plate. Thanks guys, you've scratched a curiosity itch for me!
Thank you guys so very much for doing this video. These meals ready to eat are costly if you buy a dud for a meal. I am glad that you have now saved a lot of folks out there from wasting there money on something that does not taste good. Please do more of these types of videos also. Love your channel.
We really enjoyed this video. We haven't tried any of these but we were curious to see the texture and contents. You saved us some money. Enjoyed your comments and the contest! Would enjoy others like this, snacks, other brands or whatever. Thanks!
You guys all have great personalities! Really loved this video and honestly I just really love seeing your vids no matter what they're about. I love your skits, you guys should make a channel just for that.
I've completely dumped dehydrated meals from my hiking pack. There is a a channel on TH-cam by a lady who goes by The Hungry Hiker. I use her ideas for trail food often. I think you guys should check out her channel and try some of the ideas. I think Andrew would enjoy this given his nature to practically eat just about anything 😂 Thanks for this video guys. I used to pack Mountain House meals and just couldn't stand it. These meals you reviewed reminded me of that.
This was fun, especially because my favorite two Backpackers Pantry meals duked it out at the end. I encourage you to look for and try some of the cottage industry, small company brands as well as the mass-produced better-known ones. Trailtopia makes good meals that work well for hot lunches on cold days. Greenbelly Meals makes good tasting 600 calorie breakfast bars that go great with coffee at breakfast time. Outdoor Herbivore has a number of good meals. They offer really good tasting hummus. For a long time, I enjoyed Stowaway Gourmet. On the AT a friend introduced me to their Bison Beer Black Bean Chili. Delicious. Only downsides are expense and relatively low calorie counts, but six of their meals taste very, very good to me. Speaking of calorie counts, Peak Refuel has several that hit 1000 calories and taste good, which means a lot at the end of a 20 mile day. Lastly, while everything tastes better at the end of a day hiking, all meals taste better if you also carry some olive oil, hot sauce, dried cheese, salt and pepper. Happy Hiking, and keep the adventures coming!
Thank you for watching, and thanks for the recommendation! Definitely a great idea to test out some of the smaller companies :) And I definitely need to be better about carrying olive oil or similar things with me when hiking. Thanks again! -Andrew
I just bought the Mac n cheese last week on Amazon....can't wait to try it and see how it tastes. I dehydrate a lot of my garden veggies at home and will pack some tomatoes and bell peppers to it to give it a better taste!
I'm gonna have to try the lasagna. Not sure how I haven't tried that one yet. I've been doing more minimal day hikes so I've been taking the single serving Trailtopia and Backpacker's Pantry meals. I really like the Trailtopia Chili Mac with Beef. Also have a Backpacker's Pantry Pasta & Spring Vegetables with Butter Sauce. That one sounds pretty good! Thanks for this video. I really enjoy this brand overall. Keep putting out the great content, fellas! 👍
Id love to see AlpineAire and Peak Refuel. Those can be hit or miss so it'd be genuinely valuable to see if there are some hidden gems offered by either of those brands.
You guys should try this format with Peak Refuel meals. I've tried at least a dozen different brands and nothing comes close to the taste, calorie count, and surprisingly not as much water as other similar meals from other brands.
Excellent video! Would love to see you guys do a series of these for all the dehydrated food brands. Packit gourmet next! OR! a series of you all making your own homemade dehydrated versions of your favorite meals.
Thank you for this -- I generally use Mountain House and never had any of the backpackers pantry meals. The MH Beef Stroganoff is my fave of all time, but I'll pick-up the BP Lasagna and Fettuccine alfredo for our next hike - they looked yummy!
If y'all are interested in beach camping, try out Bear Island at Hammocks Beach State Park in North Carolina. Cape Lookout National Seashore near there is also a great place to camp. They are two great places to hunt for sand dollars and have some of the best shelling on the east coast.
Great episode! Mash-ups? What combinations would you make from the non-winners? What could you add to the non-winners? SlimJim to the rice and beans? Turkey jerky to…
I enjoy sardines and tuna. Also, a first night requires eating frozen foods, such as shrimp and vegetables. Hiking in allows for defrosting and a great first meal to cook!
Guys…Packit Gourmet Austintacious tortilla soup. Tops lasagne any day! Their cheddar cheese spread on a tortilla for a quick lunch or on baked or mashed potatoes for dinner is a huge win also. Happy hiking…
Great review. I agree with assessments. Lasagna makes titanium spoon a little hard to clean. Also, some of these have much longer expiration dates than others.
Love your hiking videos! Would love you to cross compare with Peak Refuel and Mountain House. Bet if you reached out to them they would send you meals for review. The draw format would be interesting:. Lasgna vs. Lasagna vs. Lasagna, etc.
It doesn't surprise me that Lasagna won out in the end. There's a lot to be said about familiar comfort food at the end of a long day of hiking. When I did my JMT thru hike, I made my own dehydrated meals and went with a variety of bases and flavors, not wanting to get sick of eating the same thing every night for 3 weeks: pasta, couscous, rice & beans, curry flavor, chili seasoning, etc. But the one I enjoyed the most and always looked forward to was just plain old pasta with tomato sauce!
Great way to branch out your content! Now I am hungry and am for sure checking out a couple of these...... On another note: Hope these guys are paying you!! :P
I've had the Santa Fe Chicken and Rice on my last backpacking trip. At the start I enjoyed it, but the smoke flavor became too intense after multiple bites. It was certainly filling but I wish the smoke flavor was less. I always had great luck with the Peak Refuel brand for meals.
Entertaining and informative. I enjoyed this, guys! I’d like to see you review Mountain House meals, and then maybe a couple of the so-called gourmet brands like Packit Gourmet.
Stowaway Gourmet is fantastic along with Pack-it Gourmet - they're my favorites when the temps get cooler. Also, love Fernweh Foods! I've really enjoyed meals by Outdoor Herbivore this summer for cold soaking.
Thanks for doing this taste test. I definitely think that Lasagna is probably awesome even though I haven’t eaten BackPackers Pantry before. I would really like to check out the TrailTopia brand. They have very flavorful meals but I would like to see what you guys think.
Great video…MountainHouse has been the standard for decades but lots of new companies out there now…even with time tested brands and varieties, add an ounce or two to your pack and bring the mini Tabasco bottles and a few spices to give those bland ones a “kick”.
Alpine Aire Forever Young Mac and cheese is the best mac and cheese meal that I have found so far. Seems like this would be a pretty easy one considering many of us grew up on box mac and cheese with that disgusting powdered cheese packet. I have found that MOST of the rice based meals that I have tried were a disappointment/bland. Not sure why on that one either, because I grew up on instant rice as well. Mountain House beef stroganoff is good. My favorite backpacking meals are Packet Gourmet!!!
I happened to have lasagna Pack today at work. I wasn’t too excited about it, maybe it would taste better on a trail, one of my coworkers liked it a lot though . Anyhow, I’m getting ready for upcoming trip to Isle Royale NP with mostly PackItGourmet meals.
Would love to send over some Canadian brand "Happy Yak" dehydrated meals for you all to try on your next backpacking adventure! Let me know if you're all interested!
Great video! I always love lasagna I think you guys should compare maybe the lasagna with Mountainhouse and some of the other brands to see who has the best lasagna.
For AA and the viewers making their own dehydrated meals to eat on the backing trips they embark on would be a good evolution of their journey in real life and on the channel. -Charles
One factor was missing though. When you just did a 20 mile day, that rating system may be a different. What you may dislike in your backyard may be different than on the trail. It puts those food rating up about 5 points
Timestamps for each meal, and links to buy them in the Description!
If you would like to see us try another brand, let us know!
You guys should do the same thing but with Peak Refuel meals! Some of those are quite tasty :)
Yea I would love to see u try them all lol Peak and I can't even think what other ones I have. I'm so glad u did this❤
Heather's Choice! Please!!
Third on the Peak Refuel request. Really good flavors, high protein, and surprisingly low amount of water required compared to other dehydrated meals.
@adventurearchives you didn’t take into account how hungry you are after hiking all day! And how full you must have after “tasting” all those meals!
I would love to see more videos like this testing things out for hiking and camping
This was a fun change of pace! If you wanted to do more videos like this, I'd love to see one where you put hiking snacks to the test.
My favorite method is splitting up one of these pouches into two ziploc bags, adding some freeze-dried veggies, then eating with a packet of chicken. Oh my god, this is awesome! I really like the food segments of your videos so I really wouldn't mind more video's like this.
They quite often have these mid-hike campfire chats where they discuss the quality of these meals which is always entertaining
The Norwegian Turmat meals are not to be defeated. They are so good I brought some back to the usa and on my last trip someone said they would rather eat that then a real post hike meal. It’s UNREAL quality.
Im trying so hard to get my hands on one 😂
Real Turmat is the best. Hands down
Exactly the video I’ve been waiting for ! You guys should do one comparing different brand meals
This was a super fun video to watch! Thanks for putting so much effort into making it so we could enjoy it! Until next time!
Was that a birb in the BG at 17:04? 😮😂
I loved the format of this video! Hearing your opinions on camping foods and gear has been invaluable! I’d love to see more of this!
Looks like an American Robin back there, haha
@@AndrewLinArchives I figured with that crimson chest but it seemed bigger than the ones I’ve seen down here in Georgia haha Thanks Andrew!
@@HouseCatB It might be a trick of the camera lens, making the background look bigger haha :)
I am a 61 year old female who's getting ready to have two full knee replacement not at the same time but this year. I love watching your videos they are giving me the inspiration to backpack❤😊

I recommend Outdoor Pantry and Packit Gourmet as a couple brands you could check out for well above average freeze dried meals. I won't taint the judges with my opinions beyond suggesting the brands, but I keep both of these brands in my outdoor meal box.
Packit Gourmet is my favorite. Actually good food, dehydrated
I personally haven't tried any of them but we are subscribers to DomeLife channel and PackItGourmet is their favorite as well
I love this style of video!
If you're worried about a meal being too watery, take a small bag of potato flakes, to thicken it. Even half an ounce.
Robby's comments about the vegetables in the curry were spot on, because I don't feel like most of the freeze dried meals have enough vegetables. This was very helpful. It was surprising how many rated low. Now I know to choose carefully!

The best freeze dried meals i've ever had have been mountain house 100%. Their Chili with beans and Chicken & Dumplings are awesome.

Mountain House biscuits and gravy was my favorite during my PCT thru hike
Thanks for the honost reviews, really helpful!

The Cuban Coconut Black Beans and Rice is my go to 😍 with a lil olive oil…..chile…..

Enjoyed watching your taste test. I love lasagna. Looking forward to your next video🐞👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🐞
Thank you for doing this. @adventuresofaplusk, they seem to prefer the pad Thai.
Please do more of these. Work through all the major brands is possible
I like the red beans and rice w/ packet of chicken.❤❤
I’ve had several of these and I remember the green curry just tasting like Bile
I've had the Santa Fe Chicken and Rice on my last backpacking trip. At the start I enjoyed it, but the smoke flavor became too intense after multiple bites. It was certainly filling but I wish the smoke flavor was less. I always had great luck with the Peak Refuel brand for meals.

I enjoyed this review very much even being a vegetarian it was a lot of fun. Love all your hikes too
Take a look at Outdoor Herbivore.
Love videos like this! Thank you!
Knorr sides and pouch tuna fish where my backpacking staple on the AT. All meals where under 2 bucks
This was very interesting! Thanks for sharing 👀
Love this!!! Breakfast meals next? 👀
Nicely done. I’d like to see a full review of entrées from Packit Gourmet. I think you would enjoy the Texas State Fair Chili.
Thanks for doing this taste test. I definitely think that Lasagna is probably awesome even though I haven’t eaten BackPackers Pantry before. I would really like to check out the TrailTopia brand. They have very flavorful meals but I would like to see what you guys think.

You kept your analysis objective. Well done! You should try Peak Refuel next…
AdventureArchives doing the Lord's work!
You should review Good to Go meals or Outdoor Herbivore. Their stuff is FANTASTIC!!
The SF3 sound effects really complete this video
Great video! I always love lasagna I think you guys should compare maybe the lasagna with Mountainhouse and some of the other brands to see who has the best lasagna.
For AA and the viewers making their own dehydrated meals to eat on the backing trips they embark on would be a good evolution of their journey in real life and on the channel.

“What a waste of our time” 😂 that’s was hilarious
If you all haven't tried them I recommend Peak Refuel ones. Best I've tried.
When Andrew said, who's cuisine will reign supreme 😄
i heard patagonia released dehydrated soups and stews, id love to see how those are
The key to this is…Siracha! Take it wherever I go!😎 Do more like this, please!
After a long day of hiking you can add +1 Point, watching sunset while eating meal +1 Point and spending time with friends eating dinner +1 Point
One factor was missing though. When you just did a 20 mile day, that rating system may be a different. What you may dislike in your backyard may be different than on the trail. It puts those food rating up about 5 points
I think I saw you guys had Stowaway Gourmet (my favorite) in the past, but you should do a bracket style for them.
I loved this video! The top 2 are my top 2 as well. Can you do the same rating for Mountain House meals? ❤️
What did I do today? I watched three Asian guys eat rice for twenty mins. 😯
I will say I got an oats/blueberry/almonds/powdered milk breakfast from them and it was OUTSTANDING!
Will you be reviewing the military MRE, Meal Ready to Eat?
