I quit riding because I lost all confidence. I looked back and thought, "there are so many people who want to ride and can't. Why am I going to quit something like that and that I have put so much work into? I didnt come the this far just to give up!' So I rejoined. Thank for reminding me that I am not the only one who goes the tough times in life. I love riding and the gentle Giants❤️💖

I cannot tell you how much I appreciated hearing you speak about the way the equestrian world treats one another - truly, I needed this right now. I struggled with this myself lately - there was a moment where I thought about stopping my channel and I found myself thinking of you and thinking 'how does Esme cope with this?'. It is so nice to hear you speaking about this with your platform. Thank you Esme. You are inspiring and a credit to this community.

I’m 13 and I started riding lessons but after a few weeks while I still wasn’t very experienced it would be our first time cantering and my horse took off with me. I soon after got kicked out of lessons (it was a group lesson and the other girls were learning way faster than me, so the gal suggested me to another trainer who later ditched me). I just recently got on a horse for the first time in months. It felt great and I even cantered for the first time with no hassle. This video is great for me because I feel like no one ever talks about confidence and how scary it can be so thankyou.

I’m sorry this happened to you, it honestly broke my heart reading this. You need to look for different stables. Please go somewhere else where people are more understanding and nice towards all levels of riding. Try as many stables as you can. There will be one somewhere that you will feel like at home I promise ❤

So many pearls in this one, Esme! I’m in my 60’s now, and I can say that life is a cycle of ebb and flow, with no perfection in sight. I get better at appreciating both others’ achievements as well as my own with each passing year. No compliment you give is wasted, and you never know how much good it can do. Be generous with praise and kind with your words. There is my two cents! 💜

Hey im feeling with you! My 5yo Sparky and me had a rough start as well. We bought him last October, when he was 4.5. In January, he started to not turn right when i wanted him to. Later on, he just started stopping , bucking at my leg aids and going backwards. Turns out I was giving him the wrong aids. We changed the barn and at the new one, one girl helped us. I started getting confidence again. Then, my trainer fell down from him, he screwed from a horse coming the opposite direction, jumped to the side, and she couldnt hold herself. Ironically, even after that incidence, my confidence grew, because afterwards I got on him and he was very brave and tame. But recently, our saddle hasnt been fitting too well.. The saddleman never had any time, and now, he seems to have a bit of a back pain. The day before yesterday, once I was in the saddle, he immediately started bucking, I wanted to dismount but tripped and fell on my lower back and hurt it badly. Then my mum lunged him a bit, and afterwards she and a girl at the barn held him when i got on him again and they walked a bit alonside us for the first round in walk. He was nice and didnt try anything, but we noticed that when we wanted to pull the girth a bit tighter, he pushed away his back. We all agreed he was in some pain. When we pulled it loose again, he was normal again. I also managed to trot a bit.
I am so shocked cause despite a minor bucking in transition from trot to canter, he was never a bucking horse. Despite that one time I remember, when I forgot to fasten the girth, the saddle fell on his shoulder, causing him to buck a bit. So hes definitely sensitive on his shoulders regarding the saddle!
And the problem with the saddle now is the exact same: Its way to tight in the shoulder area, he already has some hardened muscles...
Now im feeling bad but also anxious: Were getting the saddle fixed, but the saddleman only has time to show up next Wednesday... But I dont want to ride him until then, cause im scared another saddle will scare him as well... and obviously I cant use the old saddle any longer in its current state... But Im afraid that he might become naughty if we cant ride until next Saturday...
Im so scared actually, and im sad because we just started gaining confidence again!

Thank you for making this video and for putting it up, so many only post the perfect videos making it really hard for people who are having confidence blocks. This video helped me realize that we all go through ups and downs. Going back to basics was honestly the best thing I could have done with my horse, you don't realize it at the time, but it does help quite alot to get you going again as well as make the bond you have between you stronger. I started watching your channel because our daughter has a grey Connemara pony and originally it was your ' how I clean my pony' ones I watched. But I love that you talk about not having a flashy pony or being at the same level as your peers at Pony Club, as I saw how this impacted her as well. Everyone's equestrian journey IS individual and our horses and ponies bring their unique challenges and learning opportunities. Long may you continue to entertain, educate and encourage the viewers on your channel. 👍🏇🦄

Unfortunately as an adult I was horribly bullied in a very toxic workplace environment. It took me years to recover from that. I lost my confidence once after falling of really badly while cantering at a show and i did get back on the horse but i was super scared to go faster than walk . Luckily My instructor noticed immediately that i was very tense and swopped me over onto a horse that i never had ridden before , he was a 15 hand cob mix called Clyde , since then the only horse i ever ride is Clyde and he is amazing, not the easiest pony to ride ,constantly refusing at jumps, bucking and rearing , but somehow he has brought my confidence sky high,I love cantering on hacks and around the schools small cross country course , and I owe it all to my amazing instructor and Clyde . I love the video, most people avoid talking about this and i really appreciate that you talked about it i love your videos and you've have inspired me to keep on riding even in difficult times💖💖💖🐎🐴🏇🏻💕.

Honestly it takes a lot to open up about these things and I wish I had this video after the passed three years I’ve had with my mare. From the time she turned five I can’t tell you how much I cried and I felt hugely damaged confidence wise. I nearly gave up so many times! At the end of last year she had three months off. Best thing I ever did for that horse. Wasn’t clipped or trimmed up, never got worked just fed and massive amounts of turn out. She’s come out this year a new horse that’s for sure…. She’s eight this year and things are starting to click hopefully for us. I rode her for six weeks six days a week at the start of this year! Never felt so confident in my life and now I can’t wait to go jumping and try XC with her! Even went to the beach with her on my own (with my dad on the ground) honestly you’re amazing and you’re doing so so well with Joey! You should definitely give yourself credit and a pat on the back because youngsters are HARD man! Honestly love how honest you are! Can’t wait to see your journey continue❤️

I’ve been through this all too. You had Joey as a major cause of confidence loss and I had a very strong mare named Evita. She gave me a concussion, knocked me out, and bucked me off multiple times. She scared me so bad but, with a lot of help from my trainers, I was able to get back on and keep going. And 4 years later she is the horse I am most comfortable on, even more so than my heart horse! I trust her so much now because I know her, and she’s taught me how to ride ANYTHING.

I really appreciate your honesty and seeing the footage from your Casper days. I rode only school and lease horses growing up. There was no pony club. We had no money. My parents weren't horsey. I felt like I was seeing videos of myself when I was young and going through rough confidence stages. I was never a natural jumper. I've since gone on to manage a polo farm where I finally got to ride 5 hours a day, six days a week. I've broken my collar bone and wrist in one accident and my pelvis years later. I understand and identify with how you felt on your own, riding and making decisions for Joey and yourself during Covid. I'm older than I want to admit to you, watching your horse videos, living a life I wish I could have had when I was young, but I wanted to tell you that your words are an inspiration. You deserve the following you have.

I have a little pony who's quite like Casper used to be. My parents are really trying to me to either get more confident with him or get another horse and just have him as a pasture pony. I really don't want another pony so I am really trying to get more confident with him but its very hard. He used to be at the old barn I went to and was labeled as "dangerous" and "naughty." People at the barn even called him Diablo. We decided to take him and after a few years found a trainer to help us with him. I have very little confidence with him and don't do much to anything with him when our instructor isn't with us. Yesterday I groomed him and even though it barely anything it was a big step for me. This video really helped me know that I'm not alone and that everyone has rough patches they have to get through. Thank you so much for this, I know it was probably not the easiest video to make but it helped me and so many others so thank you.

This video is SO HELPFUL for me right now. I just bought my first horse at 34 years old last November. Tilly is a 20 year old arab connemara mare (grey, lol). I thought I was being so responsible getting an older horse! I even leased her first. She has bitten me, bucked going into the canter, been diagnosed with lyme's disease. I have even gotten a foster horse (with her own set of problems) to make Tilly happier. We are in a patch now where, even after lunging, she is bucking almost every day. My trainer has said to simply end the session after I have gotten a little neutral forward movement. I couldn't get up the courage to ride her yesterday, and then as we were leading, she got down and ROLLED with the saddle on. I am absolutely in the mire, and I appreciate this video so much.

I absolutely love this! Thank you so much for sharing. It's way more rewarding to build a relationship with your horse rather than get a push button horse, which is a bit boring. Horses with attitude are so much cuter and the journey is a lot more rewarding in the end. I think you're very lucky and you must feel so much achievement through gaining your horses' trust and fine tuning your relationships with them and riding. Thank you also for being so humble and kind its such a breath of fresh air in a community where horse girls are absolutely vile to be around. Thank you for being you. Really made my day finding this.
