    All entries in this market segment previously have been from smaller companies, so Kegland´s entry is very significant and competitive both in terms of features and its retail price.
    The RAPT Pill is feature rich and provides enhancements over its competition and yet it is available for less cost.
    This video looks at what is on offer now and close in the future with the ability to link products together so that fermentation temperature can be automated based on gravity rather than just an estimation of time.

    Extra information:-
    Temperature Tolerance:- The Pills casing can withstand 120/248F and so can the circuit board. However the battery has a limitation of 60C/140F.
    Pressure Tolerance:- The Pill can withstand up to 10 bar/ 145 PSI of pressure. Accuracy is not effected by normal homebrewing pressure levels.

    Doing my first ever grain brew tonight. Had only ever done ale kits in buckets and carbonated in the bottle with dextrose. But I was never a fan of hoppy ale's. Plus that slug of yeast in the bottom of every bottle PISSED ME OFF and it was gross so the last kit I did was about 10 years ago. Then about a month ago I came across videos talking about pressure brewing. I was sold. After some serious horse shoe up my ass finds and a few new equipment purchases. Tonight I made my first recipe and attempt at a lager. It's fermenting in a Corney keg at 10 PSI Co2 as we speak. I had heard about the tilt and I was intrigued but the Likor Shak where I decided to get my stuff cause of selection and availability only had the pill. I like to buy local where possible due to support and advice. Since I'm doing this in a Corny there nothing to see I figured the pill would be invaluable especially with the total lack of experience and taking on Lager right out of the gate. Gotta say the damned thing is impressive. I messed with it yesterday while it was charging, now today made up a profile and will soon be getting the 4th telemetry update. It takes all the guess work out of what's going on in that stainless steel keg. Hit the app and you can see what's happening. It's AWESOME!!!!
    It's a life saver for me simply because of my total ignorance but even once that is surmounted with experience it's going to be a critical tool.

    A fantastic video as always full of information and no time wasting. It is really interesting to see how the evolution of these products is taking such a big leap this year. As a long term Tilt user this is taking the whole concept much further and has a lower price tag. It will be interesting to see how other companies react.

    Thanks for the great video David. I actually watched this after helping a friend set up a RAPT Pill yesterday and have to say this video is better than Keglands own video. The Kegland written instructions for registering and setting up the Pill are not very user friendly, altogether a frustrating experience. We also found that after calibrating the RAPT pill in water the readings in wort did not match refractometer measurement or the reading from a tilt in the same wort. The Pill was reading 1.000 in water and 1.075 in wort compared to both refractometer and a tilt reading at 1.063. More than likely user error but anyway we abandoned using it yesterday but will revist it next brew. A useful video could be a step by step first registration, RAPT portal setup and calibration for non tech savvy people 🙂

    Hi David and thank you for this very well made review. Of course it has cost me one Pill ;-). Worked well the first time I used it in a plastic bucket and a fridge but really had a hard time ''signalwise'' when placed in my GF conical fermenter. Signal strength came so low that it stopped sending telemetry for many hours even though my wifi router is close and in line of sight from the fermenter point of view. Of course the double skin or the fermenter is not radio wave friendly. Then a friend of mine who is an expert in telecom came to me with the idea of a passive repeater. I used a 3/8th inch (approx 10mm) stainless steel tube, cut to 93 mm long and placed it in the silicon bung on the top of the fermenter. It must be placed so that 31 mm is over the top of the stainless steel tri-clamp flange and the rest in the fermenter. Then I coupled the air locks on top of the stainless steel tube with a short piece of silicon tube. This helped a lot and now the Pill does no longer stop transmitting. I hope this can help someone. And I hope this is somehow clear, explained in my limited English language. Cheers! And Happy brewing with a working Pill.

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Luc. That is odd. I have not had any issues personally using the Pill with my GF conical. Do you by chance have lots of other WIFI devices in that area? There is a stronger antenna add on coming for the Pill soon though.

I also find the excellent Google sheets download.of fermentation progress every 20 minutes very useful. Great that there are more and more alternatives.

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew

      Hi Alex, yes I realise this but it is not standard and requires a fair bit more outlay. Compared to the Pill which requires none of this and is cheaper just comparing the base units.

  • @YankeeinSC1
    @YankeeinSC1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So I'd been posing these 2 questions to advance brewers creating TH-cam content. What do you say? "I'd taken a few years off from home brewing. In a comeback this fall, (think Muhammad Ali or Bo Jackson) I decided to brush up on knowledge with a TH-cam binge, as I work through a few 10 Gallon HERMS brews that I had traditionally kept on tap at the house. It seems you might want to be the heir apparent? The next generation's John Palmer perhaps...so two questions: 1) If you're harvesting and washing yeast...how do you determine cell count in the home brew environment? 2) Whada'ya make of these cool new digital hydrometers, like the RAPT Pill?!!! They are so cool. If you start reading and logging rates of fermentation however, can we use that data in a way that affects the beer style? i.e. Imagine if we used software to set a maximum and a minimum rate of fermentation and then digitally used data from the digital hydrometer to precisely and quickly adjust temperature...to keep a linear (or a specifically programed non-linear) rate of fermentation? Would it matter in the end? I think this may be the new horizon for brewing. Interested in your thoughts."

    • @YankeeinSC1
      @YankeeinSC1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think after watching this again, we can equate precise temp manipulation during fermentation to precise step mashing or decoction methods...in the end? It's likely still going to be beer. Doubtful the average will be able to differentiate between beer brewed with one steady temp vs. manipulation by a deep geek fiddling with temp manipulations at various gravities. JMHO

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, many thanks for your message. I do not really have any aspirations like that past simply sharing my professional knowledge to help people. TH-cam is a hobby for me but a very enjoyable one for sure.
      Here are my answers:-
      1) Ive worked as a commercial brewer and have homebrewed for more than 30 years now and not once have I counted yeast. I rely on yeast labs for cell count or my own eye when it comes to recultured yeast. This has worked well so far 🍻🍻🍻
      2) I really like them but do not see them as especially accurate during the entire fermentation and accept that they can be made inaccurate due to krausen sticking and other factors. The Pill is my favourite so far due to its extra features and its ability to avoid krausen interference so far. I am excited how it can be paired with the RAPT temperature controller which be controlled via gravity. Kegland are doing some great work in this regard past the basic too.
      I hope this helps 🍻🍻🍻

They look so much more user friendly than tilt? and the use of an 18650 battery and charging is so appealing. That said, my tilts do exactly as intended to be fair, it’s just the battery that’s a pain in the backside sourcing them. I use a small chest freezer to contain my fermenter located in my garage for temp control and I'm concerned that both the BT and wifi signals won't be able to reach out from that environment. It would be nice to see some signal penetration testing done with various "enclosed" environments so we could have some confidence in this device working within our specific application. At some point these will become more easily available in to US. I went through AliExpress to get one which took ~ a month. I do find some of the usability a bit buggy but it's the price for early adoption. You need to exercise patients when first beginning a fermentation as initially the numbers reported seem to have been pulled from a random number generator. But the good news is after a few hours it seems to be in sync with hydrometer and Inkbird derived numbers. I've found it to be pretty accurate, I'm on my second brew with it, I like it. Thanks for the review.

    That looks interesting. My only concern is that as with all floating hydrometers, once krausen appears all bets are off - I'm not sure how reliable the automated process will be. Ive not had leaks so far with any of the floating hydrometers that I have, including iSpindle but naturally these can vary in build due to the DIY nature of them.

    Hi, I have just purchased a rapt pill and set up is all complete (registered and connected to my wifi). It is reporting fine. The question I have is how do I actually create a template for my first brew? there does not seem to be an instruction guide for this. Do I use the 'profile' option and just enter the start time etc? It is odd to me that no one has done a step by step guide. I may just be a bit illiterate to this but I am sure I am not the only one struggling to work it out.
